1434: The joy (and possibilities) of saying no

As we close out the week, we can start to give ourselves a really hard time about the things we haven't got around to. So today I'm offering a joyful reframe.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. So on a Friday we tend to end the week thinking about everything that we have done and when it comes to the things that we haven't done, usually we give ourselves a few really hard time. But as we close out this week, I really want you to have a think about all the things that you have joyfully not done. I want you to think about anything you said no to and recognize that as an act of courage. And I also want you to recognise the bullshit that you did not rise to or tolerate and the ways in which you said no, maybe overtly or not, that meant you could say yes to yourself, like we were talking about earlier this week. If you are a keen cook or a keen painter, then you will know that sometimes less is more. Society tells us just to do, do, do and keep going. But to borrow the cooking and the painting analogy, I know I've definitely cut dishes that were good that I added too much random shit to and they just turned out really vague or inedible.

And I've also painted things where I wish I'd just stopped a little bit earlier. And in case you need to hear it, I just want to remind you that you are not alone in having things left on your to do list at the end of the week. There is nothing wrong with you. Sometimes a task just breeds. Sometimes our week is completely different to what we imagined and oftentimes things take so much longer than we think they will. If you are listening to this beating yourself up for saying yes to too many things, know that you are also in good company and I invite you to think about what would next week look like if next week's definition of success was how many times you said no and how many times you chose yourself instead. So lots to think about. I hope you find some fabulous, unexpected joy this weekend and do something for you and I can't wait to be back in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my glorious email community or in your wonderful ears on Monday for another dose of rebel rousing and encouragement. Whatever you do, choose you and I'll see you soon.
