1462: Sometimes you have to take the boring route

Today’s episode is inspired by our road trip back to the UK! We’re focusing on how there are times in life where we need to avoid doing what others feel is the most exciting thing ever, and take our own needs into consideration, even if it’s a bit dull.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. Now, on the day this episode goes out to you, we will be traveling from Germany back to the UK. As you know, if you've been around here for quite a long time. I only passed my driving test about three years ago and my goodness, we have got the miles in. We love a road trip. We're also really good at picking a particular podcast or audiobook we really want to listen to on our road trip and just completely not doing it. I also love a road trip, but when it comes to traveling with the deadlines, we've got to get to the Eurotunnel by a certain time and also our newly acquired challenge of traveling with insulin, which needs to be kept at a certain cold temperature the entire time. We don't necessarily do the stereotypical meandering road trip where we stop in certain places, we have a destination, we pick the most direct route that we can find, we pack food before we go, we stop for coffee in boring places when we need to, and we definitely don't take the scenic route.

Now I'm aware that that makes me sound like a completely boring fart. And you know what? I'm okay with that because for many of us, the idea of making everything as interesting as possible and taking in all the scenery and doing all the fun stuff can end up feeling more like a burden. I know for me that on long travel days I cannot stop in a massive supermarket because I will get so excited and overstimulated that my concentration for driving is gone. I know what I need on those days and for me, I just need to get from A to B. So I guess my point for this more rambly episode is to remind you that not everything has to be utterly fascinating, which is hard for us creatives and multi passionates because we really want to make it so. But it's okay if you're doing something that just needs to be done and it's not photo worthy, it's not particularly story worthy, and you just get it done because sometimes you just need to do that. There's a time for a really good random road trip where you stop in all the weird places you find, and there's also a time for just getting to the destination. But I think a gift that we need to remember we all have is that we can find the fun and the curious along the way.

Even if we choose the boring route, I still end up finding the weird and the wonderful in the service stations we stop in, in the cities we drive through, and maybe that is the best of both. So in case you need a reminder today, it's okay to do the sensible thing, it's okay to do the boring thing. Sometimes that is required. And sometimes that's exactly what you need to do to get to the fun bits. We are over halfway through this week, and we can do it. I'll see you tomorrow.
