1524: You can only extract so much
To wrap up this week on The Daily Pep we’re diving into pouring into yourself, and how that isn’t a fluffy, indulgent thing, but something that is absolutely and strictly necessary.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. We have made it to the end of the week. The days are literally becoming longer. And as we enter into the weekend, I want to talk a bit about pouring into ourselves. So the whole idea of pouring into ourselves can sound like some ripe, fluffy bullshit. It can sound like really surface level self care. It can also feel like taking an entire weekend off from life and ignoring every single person and responsibility.
And it can often feel like something we simply do not have the time and energy to do. But today I'm here to remind you that you can literally only extract so much of yourself so much of the time. When we have to say no to things, we tell ourselves we're being a bitch. We might feel selfish, but sometimes we literally can't do the thing. And that absolutely sucks. There is some grief that comes with that, but also there is only so much of us to extract. And pouring into yourself does not have to look like pouring a bubble bath. It can be the uncomfortable work of looking a couple of weeks ahead and being as realistic and compassionate as possible about what actually can get done.
And it can very much look like putting your own oxygen mask on before somebody else's, but not necessarily for the primary aim of saving everybody else, but also for saving yourself. I speak for many of us around here that we never, ever feel like we're doing good enough and we think that we're lazy, and we tend to get caught up in all the things that we haven't done. And in that process, one of the things we can do is minimize just how much we are spent and how much we have extracted of ourselves. And instead we really cruelly double down on it and beat ourselves up for the sheer audacity of feeling exhausted. So, as uncomfortable and hard as it might be, here's to giving yourself back some of what you so easily give to other people. Here's to remembering that pouring into yourself does not have to be fluffy bullshit. And it is a very necessary part of the process, not a luxury. And here's to knowing that you might be feeling stretched, you might be feeling overwhelmed, you might be feeling stressed.
Not because you're not doing the things or you haven't done enough, but because you haven't stopped to look at just how much you're extracting from yourself. If you're in a particularly busy season, know that you don't need hours and hours or to escape to a cabin in the woods to pour into yourself. And you might be surprised by how much little things can make a big difference. Here's to finding a piece of you over the weekend, and I can't wait to be back with you for bright and early. Back here as always, on the daily Pep or in your inboxes if you are part of my lovely email community. And if you're curious about that, you can go join at therebelrousers.com/letters. And if you haven't already found out your rebel archetype, it can be a really helpful way of understanding yourself. And I know many of us like quizzes and assessments and archetypes around here and and you can go uncover whether you are a messy rebel, a joyful rebel, a gentle rebel, or an undercover rebel over at therebelrousers.com/quiz
Have a good one, and I can't wait to see you soon.
