1554: Go on a wonder hunt
To wrap up this week on The Daily Pep!, I have some very human homework to invite some light in.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So to wrap up this week's Daily Pep, I thought I would share a quote with you that really resonated with me and is something that I think a lot of us just need to hear and think about as the world feels the way it does right now. So I've recently got into the novels of Catherine Ryan Hyde, and there's one passage in her fabulous novel 'Have you seen Luis Velez?' that really struck a chord, and it's this: 'The world is terrible and wonderful at the same time. One doesn't negate the other, but the wonderful keeps us in the game. It keeps us moving forward.' And if you're anything like me and the fabulous women I get to work with, shit has felt heavy lately, which is the biggest understatement ever. But the reason I love that quote is because it doesn't bullshit us. If you've been around here a while, you'll know all too well that I think "good vibes only" is toxic as fuck, and yet we do need to find a way to keep going. And holding those two things in our hands at once, and having it as a "yes, and" rather than an "or" or invalidating one of them, can feel incredibly complicated.
But it is one of the most helpful things we can do, and I think we are definitely, whether we like it or not, getting used to living in the nuance. I am a firm believer that joy is an act of rebellion, and that one of the things that we have to do as humans going through this is fight as hard as we can to retain some sense of wonder, some sense of awe, and to remember that there are good bits. Like the quote says, one does not negate the other, but it is the wonder that keeps us in the game and in moving forward, and I think many of us need a bit of a wonder treasure hunt right now. The messy thing about being human is that we have to find a way to hold grief and pure rage in the same hand as joy and wonder is part of what actually helps us stay human. So that is your very human homework for this weekend. I want you to go and find some wonder. That could look like spending time with people who light you up, intentionally doing something that really makes you smile for no other reason than it makes you smile, or go spend some time with some baby things if you can, whether that's baby flowers, baby humans, baby animals, And remember that life can be pretty fucking incredible, it can just be hard to remember it sometimes. Have a hopeful weekend, look for the wonder, and I'll be back with you on Monday, in your ears as usual for another episode of the Daily Pep, or in your inbox if you're part of my fabulous email community, where I'm sharing all of the behind-the-scenes stuff about my upcoming trip to Bulgaria.
And if you want to join me on that journey, you can join the email community by going to the link in the show notes or by going to therebelrousers.com/letters. Either way, I'll see you then. And remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter.
