1610: Measure twice, cut once?

We’re kicking off this Monday challenging some conventional wisdom to help you do thing, rather than think about the thing!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you. So around here on the Daily Pep, I love to fuck with conventional wisdom because frankly, some of it is bullshit, Some of it has its merits when you take part of it. And around here we tend to be a slightly contradictory combination of rebels and good girls. And sometimes I think we just need the reminder that we get to tear the rules up and make our own. So something got me thinking last week about that saying measure twice, cut once, and I think that there are a lot of scenarios where that can be really helpful. For example, I would very much like my carpenter or my heart surgeon to live by those words. But as creatives and multi passionates they are not always the most helpful because we can tend to overthink to start with. And if you're anything like me, you may get completely sidetracked on that second measure.

Trying to figure out if you have the best ruler, looking at more efficient ways to do it, and the thing that was already scary to begin with, well, you can end up adding in a lot of extra steps which do feel good and productive, but ultimately take you away from doing the thing. This is to say, this is my very long winded way of saying sometimes you just have to fucking go for it and experiment. And I want to add, as a bit of an aside here, I was very disappointed to learn that the phrase around and find out isn't actually all about creative experiments and seeing what works, but I think it should be. One of the best ways we learn is by doing. And sometimes you have to kind of cut and measure once and get it completely wrong to figure out how the saw feels like in the first place and understand things practically and not just theoretically. So have a think about where you are measuring twice and more in your own life and where you just need to start. And if you feel lovingly called out because you've fallen down a research or efficiency rabbit hole, know that we've all been there. I'm throwing you an imaginary stepladder.

Come on out and just give it a go. I hope you have a start to your week as fabulous as you are, and I can't wait to be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning to start your day with a compassionate bang.
