We know perfection doesn't exist but we still hold ourselves up to impossibly high standards. Today's episode is a reminder that you might be closer than you think.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. It is the end of the week, the weekend is very nearly here, and you absolutely made it. Now, yesterday on the Daily Pepper, we started talking about this idea of being this best friend version of yourself. And while it might not be language that we necessarily use when we are doing anything in the kind of self help, personal development, self improvement realm, it's kind of part of what we're doing now. It is so easy to think about this best version of yourself as this woman who exists in the future, who has all of her shit together. It is so easy to kind of think of our parallel selves and it can be the start of a pretty big rabbit hole that doesn't feel great. But the thing is, if we're thinking about improving ourselves and if we're thinking about it rationally, and I know you know this, we are not actually aiming for this perfect version of ourselves because we know that perfection doesn't exist. So with that logic, if we know that perfection doesn't exist, maybe you're actually closer to being this best version of yourself than you think.

If we look at this kind of idealized version of ourselves that we've put on a pedestal that we are constantly aiming towards, and we realize that somewhere tied up in that is probably a lot of things that we feel like we should be doing, then maybe we can actually start to see the small incremental changes that we're building upon and actually see that we are so much closer than we actually think we are. And I get that can feel a bit negative and I'm not trying to be a dream shitter, it's just that I don't think there's necessarily an end destination we're aiming for. When we think of self improvement and also when we get there, let's say that there is, you're still going to have your quirks and you're still going to have all of these fabulous things that make up your unique brilliance that we were talking about yesterday. Your unique combination of stories, strengths, skills, memories, experiences, perspectives that nobody else has, and the things that make you, frankly, fucking fabulous. So maybe you are a lot closer than you think you are. Maybe this idealized part of yourself is a lot closer than you think. And you can never truly start from scratch. And that is such a good thing because so many of the things about who you are right now is exactly what the world needs.

And maybe you're all right just the way you are. And I know that's hard to hear. That's hard to think about, but I know it's true. So some food for thought for you over the weekend. We all know perfect doesn't exist, so stop being so damn hard on yourself and see if you can start to admire yourself for where you are rather than just where you're going. So have a good one. I can't wait to be back in your inbox. My letters of rebellion on Sunday.

You can find out more about them in the show notes and grab the link there or back in your ears on Monday morning. Regardless of what this weekend has in store for you, I hope you get to do something for you. And I hope you get to do something fun. See you soon. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
