                            1014: Let's honour what we have done

                            If you’re anything like me, you probably end the week beating yourself up with everything you haven’t got done. So today, let’s flip that on it’s head and wrap up this week toghether!

                            Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So I don't know about you, but often I get to a Friday, and I'm pretty bloody knackered. And I'm also looking back at my to do list And really focusing on what I didn't do. I choke my being knackered up to the fact that it's the end of the week, And rarely do I consider the fact that it might just be because I've worked quite hard. So to round off this week, I thought that we can actually honor What we have done, no matter how that compares to what we think we should have done or plan today. Because the fact is that for a lot of things, we don't know how long it's gonna take until we've done it. Around here, we also tend to be massive time optimists. We tend to underestimate the amount of time that things take.


                            And sometimes we just can't really foresee how 1 task is gonna easily turn into 15, Especially if we've never done it before. Monday us often doesn't know what Friday us will come to learn, Yet we give ourselves no grace around that. We take Monday's plans and make them gospel and then use them as a stick to be ourselves with. Even when we all know we are not fortune tellers, we don't know what unexpected shit's gonna happen. And by Friday, we completely disregard All the unexpected stuff that we have done and skip straight to the things that we haven't done. So if it is safe for you to do so right now, I want you to pull up your notes app on your phone or grab one of your gorgeous notebooks and just brain dump all of the things that you actually did. And I am very confident that you will be quite surprised because we are all too good at giving ourselves shitloads of things to do, But we are not so great at recognizing our wins and celebrating our achievements. And remember that it does not have to be the most productive week ever.

                            It is okay if you had off days. It's okay if you had slow days, and it's okay if you didn't get things done. We tend to massively catastrophize those things, but chances are if you listen to this, your world hasn't ended just because you didn't do the thing. So go make that list. Remember that Monday, you was not a fortune teller, could not predict all of the unexpected shit, And that you really did way more than you think you did this week. So go do that and have a good weekend Not because it is deserved, because we do not have to deserve a weekend, but because you are a fabulous human being. You get to have time for you, And you get to have fun. Give yourself some joy this weekend, and I'll see you on Monday.

                            1013: Go do that little f*cker!

                            Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Now, I don't know about you, but I am really, really good at taking something that was quite small, turning it into something that is huge, and then putting it off and feeling really shit about it. And it starts that whole spiral, which I think so many of us are familiar with, that whole feeling shit about the fact that we feel shit. And it can really start us going down some massive rabbit holes which are full of bullshit where we're believing we're lazy, that we've never achieved anything, and we're just being really, really hard on ourselves. So today I figured we could just nip that in the bud by just doing that tiny thing that has got enormous. Chances are there is something that is pretty small that you need to do, that you've been putting off for a while, that lives in a part of your brain that just doesn't shut the fuck up. And because it has lived there maybe for longer than you'd have liked, and because it has become one of your dreamshitter's prized possessions, it can be really daunting.

                            And it becomes so much bigger than it actually is. We talk a lot here on the Daily Pep about compassion and self kindness and giving ourselves grace. And one of the kindest things that we can actually do for ourselves is to just go and do the tiny fucker. While it might not be pleasant at the time, and while we might be seriously beating ourselves up about how long it took us to do, especially when we realized that the thing didn't really take that much time at all, what it does do for us talking about compassion is it frees up a bit of our brain. Because, goodness me, we all have enough going on in our heads that we don't need to be haunted by tiny fuckers. So whatever it is that you've been putting off, and no matter how long you've been putting it off, and there is absolutely no judgment here, go do the fucker. Go do it right now, and both your present and future selves will thank you for it. You've got this. You can do it. So go do it. And I'll see you tomorrow.

                                1009: Is it you, or is it an impossible setup?

                                Today I’m sharing an ah-ha! moment and a really helpful reflection to wrap up this week.

                                Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. The weekend is nearly here. We have made it. And if you're being hard on yourself for what you did or didn't do this week, I want to round us off with some food for thought. So this week I was reading Emily McDowell's Substack. Now, she is a fabulous illustrator as well as a writer, and she has a brilliant series where she shares the truth about going mega viral. Now, there is so much good stuff in there, and I've put the link in the show notes if you want to check it out. But there's one part in particular that really stood out to me, and I think a lot of us can relate to, and it was a huge aha moment for me.

                                In it, she shares about some challenges she's going through and says it felt like a personal failing, not an impossible setup. And I really want to dive a bit into that today because how much of the time are we beating ourselves up about things that aren't actually our responsibility? Or beating ourselves up for being able to do an absolutely impossible task or meeting our own impossible expectations? A lot of us around here are recovering perfectionists, and we have collectively got a shitload of experience of setting some goals and then moving the goalposts every time we hit one. Or we expect ourselves to do something perfectly, even though we know intellectually that it is simply not possible. In general, especially as women, we are expected to have it all and be it all, and it is just not going to happen. And it is okay that that doesn't happen. And maybe actually we're doing enough, and instead of turning the blame back in on ourselves, we need to start critiquing the system. I'm not suggesting we completely abdicate all personal responsibility in every aspect of our lives, but I think there are a lot of things that we try to live up to that were never our idea, and they were probably never going to happen anyway. And we're doomed to fail in the first place because it is an impossible setup, like Emily McDowell says.

                                So as you're reflecting on this week and looking at what you did do, what you didn't do, and as a lot of us end up doing, beating yourself up about things. I just want you to take a moment's pause. Just look at whether it was realistic in the first place, and if you're taking on board impossible setup as a personal failure, and if you are, which I think a lot of us are, please don't use that as another reason to beat yourself up. I know many of us know the cycle of beating ourselves up about beating ourselves up only too well. But this Friday we are firmly saying it. So give yourself credit for what you did do, toot your horn and think about what you're actually proud of, and give yourself grace for operating within many impossible setups.
