1071: A messy pep talk!
Today we're all about embracing our wonderful, messy, inconsistent selves!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So I don't know about you, but one thing I'm really good at is having an existential crisis. I can have a really good idea that I love one day, and the next day I can be absolutely tearing it to shreds. And rather than think about the different stuff I've got going on in my life and how that might be influencing that, I just buy into that thought hook, line, and then sinker. The fact that I might not have slept very well and I don't really have energy for the idea doesn't come into it. The fact that there's something going on in my personal life and maybe I'm a bit frustrated, that doesn't come into it either. I just assume that the idea is shit, and I just go by whatever I'm feeling that day.
Now I'm a huge fan of compassionate productivity and being led by what feels good to us. But I think we also need to be a little bit discerning of how we feel about something scary, a project we're doing, a decision we're making on a day to day basis. Because as humans, we are fabulously inconsistent beings. Some days things feel amazing, some days they feel utter shite and it might not actually be to do with the situation itself. That might not have changed, but different external factors might have. What I'm trying to say here is that just because you don't feel good about an idea or a project one day, doesn't mean that the project is just bullshit. Because you haven't got the energy to do something another day doesn't mean that you're not gonna do it. Give yourself grace for being the fabulous, imperfect, messy human that you are and that we all are.
The same way some people say don't go to bed in an argument. Don't believe your inner critic when you're tired because it is speaking more bullshit than normal and it also pokes even harder at the most tender spots because it spots an opportunity. So if you're making any big decisions, see what you feel like over the course of a week and take into account the other context of your life. See what patterns come up and remember that some shit days really are just a blip and treat them accordingly. So that is my messy pep talk for you today. Have a good Tuesday. I can't wait to see you tomorrow. And remember, my darlings, that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1057: Let's talk about the paths we do travel
For today’s pep talk I’m sharing a story to remind you of the choices you do have, and to put yourself back into the equation!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy hump day and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, I want to share a story with you, and I'm sharing it because I think it helps put a lot of things into perspective. And can also embolden us a bit and invite us to get curious about what we actually want. So when I was little, I remember asking my dad how long it would take if I was to walk down every single street in the world. Now, I remember thinking that it would probably take quite a long time, but it was definitely doable. So I was quite shocked to find out just how big the world is and that that wouldn't really be possible. Now, when I was younger, that burst my bubble. I don't know why, because while I have always liked travelling, walking has not been my forte.
But now, quite a few years later, I see it differently, and I see it like this: if we can't do all of the things, so if we can't walk down every single street in the world, then at some point choices have to be made. Some things become higher priorities and some things don't. Now, I am all too aware that many of us have life circumstances which are completely out of our control that can put limitations on us, and it is not as easy as just saying, do exactly what the fuck you want, because life's not that simple. But that doesn't mean that there aren't a whole bunch of choices that we get to make. Even though around here we're rebels, it is so easy to get so lost in what other people want us to do, on other people's expectations of us, and this whole idea about how we think we should live our life. But if we're never going to be able to walk down every street and we're never going to be able to satisfy everybody, then for the choices that we can make and the paths that we can choose, Why not do something that actually serves us? There will always be the case that there are paths that we don't get to travel, but there are also a hell of a lot of things that we do get to do. So if we accept that at some point we have to make some choices, and that also not making a choice is making a choice, let's at least put ourselves back into the equation and strive to live the life that we want to live Not the one that society says that we should live, or the one that your auntie's best friend's hamster thinks we should live. So I'll leave you with that.
Have a good one. Happy Hump Day. We are collectively doing pretty damn well this week, especially if we think that we aren't. So keep going.

1056: Find your breadcrumbs
If you’re feeling lost, or need a reminder of who you are - today I’ve got just the thing for you!
Struthless: The Curse of the Country Song (documentary)
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So for today's daily prep, I want to remind you to go back to the things that you love. So that could be quotes that you love, it could be books, it could be films, anything that makes you feel really deeply or gives you what my favorite YouTuber Struthless calls the Astral Yeehaw. Because there are some things that we might be able to explain or we might not be able to explain that remind us of who we are. They make us feel alive and maybe they make us feel excited to be alive. And they can be just the things to turn to, especially when we're feeling lost. And I really believe that they are the gifts that keep on giving because they're going to speak differently to you at different seasons of your life. They may take on a whole new meaning, or they might remind you of exactly who you are when you feel like you're floating in the ether.
Now, a quick reminder. Try not to judge the things you love. They do not have to impress anybody else. It doesn't matter if anybody else would absolutely cringe at the thought of them. All that matters is how it makes you feel. There can be so much inspiration found in new things, but there's also so much gold dust to be found in things that we've already discovered, especially if it's been a while since we revisited them. So take this as a massive permission slip to go rewatch one of your favourite films, to go back and see what you've highlighted in some of your treasured books and see what they have in store for you. Because I've got a feeling they might just contain a whole heap of breadcrumbs with some comfort thrown in as well.
I'm gonna go route through my DVD collection and find some I really love that I haven't watched in ages and I invite you to do the same. Here's to finding clues about who we are in the things that resonate the most. I'll see you tomorrow.

1053: You can't be on top of everything
All of our to-do-lists and someday piles are fit to burst. Today we’re taking an unconventional, and slightly uncomfortable, approach to ALL the things we have to do.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So today, I wanna bust a myth that I think all of us bite into. And that can really keep us stuck and trapped and from doing the things that we really want to do. And that's this idea of being on top of it all. For so many of us, we put so many things on the someday pile to be done or to have our attention when we feel on top of it all or when we've got everything sorted. And a lot of the time, it's almost like we live for that moment. It becomes a carrot that we are always chasing yet never quite reach. Now for each and every one of us, being on top of it is gonna look differently.
We all have wildly different lives, and we probably all have an image of ourselves that we hold in our head of some future version of us where we are on top of it all and we've got it sorted. But to burst our bubble, if we were to go to that version of ourselves, the amount of time that we would stay on top of it would probably be very, very limited because life simply goes on. There are always more things to be done. There's always another load of washing. And so many of the tasks and the things that we have to do aren't one and done, but they are cyclical and they are infinite. So now that we've burst that bubble, I wanna create another bubble. And it's this idea of the liberation and the freedom that can come with accepting that we're never gonna be on top of everything, and that is okay. There's this part in the book four thousand weeks by Oliver Burkeman where he talks about his ambition to reach inbox zero.
And what he found was the more he tried, the more he was in his inbox, and the more emails he actually received and the harder it became. And I think there is a point where we try to be on top of things to the point that it almost becomes counterproductive because we just end up with more shit and the someday pile gets even further away. And this is what gets me excited because I think if we can kind of come to accept that we're never gonna be on top of things or our to do list is never gonna be empty or we're never gonna be done with everything, then we get to take some of those someday things and do them now. We do not have to punitively hold them hostage until we become this idealized version of ourselves. And, yes, it's probably gonna be messy at times, but we can do some of those things now. The projects that we have and the things that we most want to do do not have to be things that we have to earn because as long as they are, chances are we will keep moving the goalposts because the goalposts always move, and we'll never get around to them. And that would just be really sad. And I wanna end this episode with the truth.
Nobody is on top of all their shit, no matter how it looks and no matter how hard they try to make it look otherwise. And I think if we try to be really completionist about life and we also operate in a way that something is wrong with us because everybody else is doing everything, then I think we're in for a long, grueling ride. And I don't think any of us want that. So here's to being messy, imperfect humans. Here's to not being on top of our shit. I can tell you right now, I am not on top of my shit. Yet I've tried so long and so hard to be. And the only thing I succeeded in doing is putting all my hopes and dreams last and making myself a bit miserable.
But when I try to not do everything, that's when I have fun. That's when life feels a lot more meaningful. And the last time I checked, the world didn't end. So play around with it, see how it feels for you, this idea of being okay with not being on top of everything. And I hope it lightens your load too. I'll see you tomorrow.

1051: Do or ditch!
Our dreamsh*tter is a massive fan of highlighting all the little things we haven’t got done, so for today’s episode, we’re doing something radical.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So if you are anything like me, every week when you write your to-do list, there tends to be a couple of fuckers that just keep rolling over. Every week as we write them afresh, it's almost like they're mocking us and we get so fucking annoyed at them. And our dream shitter absolutely loves them too, because no matter what we have got done and what we have got ticked off, our dream shitter can highlight them and point to them and say, yeah, but you're not doing this thing. So today we're going to get a bit radical and we are either going to say bucket to doing those things and make peace with the fact that it's not going to happen, and chances are the world is definitely not going to end, or we're going to seriously half-ass them and just get them off our plate. You do not need more reminders of things that you haven't got around to. Your dream shitter does that as its full-time job. And chances are you can use that newly freed up space in your brain for much much better things.
So as you're deciding whether you're going to ditch them or whether you're going to half-ass them, I just also want to remind you that all of us have these things. You are not alone. You are certainly not the only one with rolling to-dos and things that you haven't done and piles and mountains of things that you've yet to do. If any of us wrote down a grand list of all the things that we need to do in every category and area in life, that list probably would be pretty big and it would be pretty messy. And that's not a personal failure thing, it's that life is complicated, it is nuanced. There are so many things that we have to take care of, there are so many responsibilities we've got, there's so much bureaucracy and paperwork and things we've forgotten, and that's okay. Remember that our brain has a negativity bias, so we are always going to focus on the things that we haven't done rather than the things that we have done, and we don't tend to always acknowledge all of the many, many, many things that we have done and the many steps that go into every single task. So give yourself a bit of a damn break and decide whether you're gonna ditch them or half-ass them.
See if you can delegate them. Try not to delay them if possible. And let's reclaim some of that precious brain space. So see what feels good for you, and let's get those fuckers off our lists.

1050: Do something - just because!
We tend to be people that seriously get sh*t done around here, so for today’s episode we’re diving into what it might look like to do something, just for the sake of it!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. Now around here, we tend to be people who get shit done. Yes, there are times when we struggle. There are times when we seriously procrastinate. And there are times when we simply can't be fucked. But we do get shit done. We also tend to have seriously ticking the things off the list and adding them to you as you finish the last thing.
It can be all too easy for our lives to become all about doing stuff, and life can feel like one big to do list. So if that resonates with you I know that it resonates with me too, as well as a lot of your fellow listeners. Today, I've got something that I want you to do that is just for you. That is not for the point of productivity. It is not for the point of progressing anything or moving something along. It is not doing something for somebody else. It's doing something just because. So today, I want you to do one thing simply because you want to do it.
Do something that is absolutely meaningless in the grand scheme of things and something that is not on your to do list. Now this might feel challenging. I know for me, I find it really difficult because I find it a lot easier to do things for other people, And I also find it a lot easier to do tangible things that I can cross off a list. But if this is you too, I think this becomes even more important. If you look at little kids, so much of what they do is simply because they want to do it. Yeah. Okay. That is the argument that they're not burdened by a lot of life responsibilities or shouldn't be, but there's also that sense of play.
And there's that sense of doing things simply because they're fun. So that is my challenge for you today. Remember, it does not need to be a huge thing. It doesn't even have to take you 5 minutes. See if you can try and do one thing that brings a smile to your face or feels nice or that you haven't done in ages that just isn't productive. It is so easy for our self worth to become tied to what we do for other people or what we do for our own productivity. And it's also really easy for life to lose its sparkle. So today, let's put a bit of sparkle back into our lives.
Have a look around you, and see what you can work with, and dip your toes in. I'll see you tomorrow. Happy Monday. And here's to awakening parts of us that might have been dormant for a while and given ourselves a shit ton of grace and love and compassion rather than a shit ton of shame. I'll see you tomorrow.
