1093: There's no one right way

If you get caught up trying to make the ‘right decision’, or feel stressed trying to find the ‘one right path’, let’s take some pressure off.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So today, I wanted to pop in with a quick reminder that there is no one right way to live life. I know for many of us around here, we are recovering people pleasers and perfectionists. And as much as we rebel, there can also be a certain amount of safety found in figuring out whether you're doing something the right way or not. But if you are looking for that certainty in the art of living life, then my friend, as much as it sucks, you're never gonna find it because there is no one right way to live life. There is no one correct path you can choose, and we all have different preferences. What is a dream life to one person is hell in another person's eyes. And I think in trying to pick the right path and getting really focused on that, we miss out on so many cool side quests that we might not have found otherwise. And we can also end up creating a life that looks like success to somebody else, but doesn't feel like that way on the outside.

There are very few decisions in life that you truly cannot undo. And we all reserve the right to start walking down one path, then backpedal and choose a different one instead. That doesn't mean you've done something wrong. It just means that this whole life thing is a bit of an experiment, and it will be a case of trial and error. So whatever you've got going on in your life at the moment, I hope this episode can relieve you of the pressure of finding this one perfect solution. Because as much as we often wish there was one, there simply isn't. And if it feels fucking uncomfortable, it's because it is. You're not doing anything wrong.

If you're wondering then what to do instead, get quiet and ask yourself what you really need, what you would do if you were certain that everything would work out, and what you would love somebody to give you permission for. It is often only through action that we figure out whether something was right for us in the first place, and it's okay if it's not. And there are just some things that you can't work out hypothetically. This does require courage, but, my dear, you have it in bucketloads, and you also do not have to metaphorically pick one route, book your flight, buy a house, and live there. Instead, see if you can take smaller steps there to figure out how it feels. See it a bit like going on holiday there rather than uprooting your entire life. And you're gonna find out so much just by doing that. So that's it for today's daily pep.

Thank you so much for being here. It is a joy to start your mornings with you. And I can't wait to see you bright and early as always tomorrow morning.

1092: An unconventional take on blooming

A lot of the time we associate blooming with things looking good on the outside, but today we’re diving into the more subtle side of what it means to bloom (and how to recognise it).

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for yesterday's episode, I left on the quote that I love that I've shared quite a few times around here about how nothing in nature blooms all year long, so don't expect yourself to either. So for today's episode, I want to dig a bit deeper into that, specifically the part about what it means to bloom. It is so easy to think that the times in our life when we're blooming is when things are looking really good on the outside or we're going through some big change that is visible to everyone. But that's not necessarily the case. A lot of the changes and a lot of the blooming that we do is very internal, and it's also very slow, and that is part of the process. You're not doing anything wrong. But I think if we think of blooming only in the case of when the flower becomes bright and is at its most beautiful, what we can do is ignore some of the biggest transformations that actually happen along the way.

I'm a huge fan of celebrating what I call your intangible wins, because they are often some of the most important wins that we have. And intangible wins are the things that are never going to appear on your to do list and can be things like setting boundaries, your ability to deal with the situation and have hard conversations, that kind of thing. And I don't think any of us give ourselves enough credit for those intangible wins, nor do we often recognize them. So I just want to invite you today to think about what the different stages of blooming are for you and what it means to bloom in different areas of your life. Because that is going to look different for each of us. There is no right way of doing it. Some things take longer to bloom than others. Some things bloom more loudly, some things bloom more quietly.

But I bet if you looked for it, you could find an area in your life where you're blooming right now. Because we do not have one singular flower, we are made up of many, many different flowers and many different facets of our life. We are continual works in progress, and there is always something to celebrate. So here's to your intangible wins, here's to your many blooming flowers, and here's to remembering that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1091: What season are you in?

Sometimes it can feel like we’re going to be burnt out or busy forever! Today we’re diving into the helpful (and relieving) approach of seeing life in seasons.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Now I don't know about you, but I am really good at all or nothing thinking. When I'm going through a busy period or when I'm feeling really exhausted, It's really easy for me to believe that it's always gonna be this way. And I end up in a kind of double pressure situation where I'm trying to deal with life in that moment as it is and I'm also future worrying about having to deal with it continually. Now there are times in our lives where we just have to push through and the light at the end of the tunnel feels a bit further away than we'd like. But there are other times where it's really helpful to consider what season of life you're in right now because chances are the busy season is not gonna last all year. The exhaustion will also not last forever, and it's about recognizing what season we're in right now. So that is the question I wanna pose for you today.

What kind of season are you in? Recognizing our seasons can make them so much easier to deal with, and it's also a really helpful way to be more flexible and adaptable to our own needs. Because if we can figure out what season of life we're in right now, we can figure out what we need in this season. We can figure out what is actually important and the things that we can pick up later. If it is a really busy chaotic season for you, it might be about putting yourself into maintenance mode and just doing the absolute necessary. And if it's a bit more of a fallow period, but you know you've got a busy period coming up, what can you do to really rejuvenate during the season and also make the next season easier for future you? Our seasons don't necessarily match up with the time of the year it is. But if you can identify which of the 4 seasons you're in, that can also be a helpful way of figuring out what you need right now and what kind of time it is for you if you're not really sure. And I want to leave you with a quote that I've shared quite a few times on here, but I never get sick of saying. And it's that whole thing about nothing in nature blooms all year round, so don't expect yourself to either. Have a good one, and I'll see you tomorrow.

    1085: Let's give future us a break

We’re kicking off the week with some compassionate strategy, and giving future us a well-earned break!

    Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. I wanna kick off this week with a reminder that you don't have to solve everything this week. I think every week we get to Sunday or we get to Friday, and we pin so many hopes on our future self. It can be comforting to do that in the moment because it means present us doesn't have to deal with us. But it can often mean that future us, e. G. Monday us right now, feels a bit burdened and put upon. So if you're feeling like that, I really invite you to look at everything you need to do this week and actually see if you need to do it.

And, also, see if you can put in place some kind things for Tuesday you, Wednesday you, Thursday you, or Friday you. For many of us, our automatic response to our future selves is just to give her more work, is to give her more shit to do and more shit to think about. But I'm pretty damn sure that future you is gonna be grateful if you've planned something that they can actually enjoy, and there's not just one more thing to do. So that is some food for thought as you go about planning your week. Remember that you don't have to get it all done, that if it feels like a bare minimum week or a maintenance week, then by all means, just do what you have to do and do the bare minimum. And if you have woken up feeling full of beans, make sure you plan some rest time too. So happy Monday my dears. I hope this week provides you with lots of unexpected joy.

Treat yourself how you would treat a dear friend. And remember as always that everything changes when you believe you matter.

              1071: A messy pep talk!

Today we're all about embracing our wonderful, messy, inconsistent selves!

              Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So I don't know about you, but one thing I'm really good at is having an existential crisis. I can have a really good idea that I love one day, and the next day I can be absolutely tearing it to shreds. And rather than think about the different stuff I've got going on in my life and how that might be influencing that, I just buy into that thought hook, line, and then sinker. The fact that I might not have slept very well and I don't really have energy for the idea doesn't come into it. The fact that there's something going on in my personal life and maybe I'm a bit frustrated, that doesn't come into it either. I just assume that the idea is shit, and I just go by whatever I'm feeling that day.

Now I'm a huge fan of compassionate productivity and being led by what feels good to us. But I think we also need to be a little bit discerning of how we feel about something scary, a project we're doing, a decision we're making on a day to day basis. Because as humans, we are fabulously inconsistent beings. Some days things feel amazing, some days they feel utter shite and it might not actually be to do with the situation itself. That might not have changed, but different external factors might have. What I'm trying to say here is that just because you don't feel good about an idea or a project one day, doesn't mean that the project is just bullshit. Because you haven't got the energy to do something another day doesn't mean that you're not gonna do it. Give yourself grace for being the fabulous, imperfect, messy human that you are and that we all are.

The same way some people say don't go to bed in an argument. Don't believe your inner critic when you're tired because it is speaking more bullshit than normal and it also pokes even harder at the most tender spots because it spots an opportunity. So if you're making any big decisions, see what you feel like over the course of a week and take into account the other context of your life. See what patterns come up and remember that some shit days really are just a blip and treat them accordingly. So that is my messy pep talk for you today. Have a good Tuesday. I can't wait to see you tomorrow. And remember, my darlings, that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1057: Let's talk about the paths we do travel

For today’s pep talk I’m sharing a story to remind you of the choices you do have, and to put yourself back into the equation!

                            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy hump day and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, I want to share a story with you, and I'm sharing it because I think it helps put a lot of things into perspective. And can also embolden us a bit and invite us to get curious about what we actually want. So when I was little, I remember asking my dad how long it would take if I was to walk down every single street in the world. Now, I remember thinking that it would probably take quite a long time, but it was definitely doable. So I was quite shocked to find out just how big the world is and that that wouldn't really be possible. Now, when I was younger, that burst my bubble. I don't know why, because while I have always liked travelling, walking has not been my forte.

But now, quite a few years later, I see it differently, and I see it like this: if we can't do all of the things, so if we can't walk down every single street in the world, then at some point choices have to be made. Some things become higher priorities and some things don't. Now, I am all too aware that many of us have life circumstances which are completely out of our control that can put limitations on us, and it is not as easy as just saying, do exactly what the fuck you want, because life's not that simple. But that doesn't mean that there aren't a whole bunch of choices that we get to make. Even though around here we're rebels, it is so easy to get so lost in what other people want us to do, on other people's expectations of us, and this whole idea about how we think we should live our life. But if we're never going to be able to walk down every street and we're never going to be able to satisfy everybody, then for the choices that we can make and the paths that we can choose, Why not do something that actually serves us? There will always be the case that there are paths that we don't get to travel, but there are also a hell of a lot of things that we do get to do. So if we accept that at some point we have to make some choices, and that also not making a choice is making a choice, let's at least put ourselves back into the equation and strive to live the life that we want to live Not the one that society says that we should live, or the one that your auntie's best friend's hamster thinks we should live. So I'll leave you with that.

Have a good one. Happy Hump Day. We are collectively doing pretty damn well this week, especially if we think that we aren't. So keep going.

                            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So for today's daily prep, I want to remind you to go back to the things that you love. So that could be quotes that you love, it could be books, it could be films, anything that makes you feel really deeply or gives you what my favorite YouTuber Struthless calls the Astral Yeehaw. Because there are some things that we might be able to explain or we might not be able to explain that remind us of who we are. They make us feel alive and maybe they make us feel excited to be alive. And they can be just the things to turn to, especially when we're feeling lost. And I really believe that they are the gifts that keep on giving because they're going to speak differently to you at different seasons of your life. They may take on a whole new meaning, or they might remind you of exactly who you are when you feel like you're floating in the ether.

Now, a quick reminder. Try not to judge the things you love. They do not have to impress anybody else. It doesn't matter if anybody else would absolutely cringe at the thought of them. All that matters is how it makes you feel. There can be so much inspiration found in new things, but there's also so much gold dust to be found in things that we've already discovered, especially if it's been a while since we revisited them. So take this as a massive permission slip to go rewatch one of your favourite films, to go back and see what you've highlighted in some of your treasured books and see what they have in store for you. Because I've got a feeling they might just contain a whole heap of breadcrumbs with some comfort thrown in as well.

I'm gonna go route through my DVD collection and find some I really love that I haven't watched in ages and I invite you to do the same. Here's to finding clues about who we are in the things that resonate the most. I'll see you tomorrow.
