1335: Permission to not have it all figured out
If the pressure to have everything figured out is overwhelming, then today’s episode is a permission slip for you.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So to kick off this week, I thought we could start with something that might just help take the pressure off a little bit. And it is this idea that it's actually okay not to know all the answers. I think most of us go around life thinking that other people have got all their shit figured out and we haven't, and that is not the case. And here's the thing. We're all new to this human thing. As much as a lot of the self help and personal development stuff out there would have you believe, there is no one right way to do this. There is no one path.
And for a lot of us, we are making things up as we go, and that's kind of the point. And if we're all making it up anyway, that's where it gets exciting because you get to create your life. But I think one of the most freeing things, which can be hard, difficult, uncomfortable, and sometimes just shitty to accept, is that sometimes there is no right answer. And what you can do is your best guess. And I know from personal experience that sometimes you can end up deliberating and figure something out for so long that, a, it becomes even more confusing, b, it sucks up so much of our precious time and energy, and, c, sometimes we just have to learn by the doing and get the experience and data points along the way. So picking something and trying it out tentatively can be a lot more helpful than trying to wait for the perfect next step because and I think we all know this. There is no perfect next step. And if there is, well, it fluctuates from minute to minute.
We all go through different seasons of needing different things, and that's just part and parcel of being human. You're not doing anything wrong. Don't get me wrong. I know how uncomfortable it can be being in the uncomfortableness of not knowing what to do. I know that all too well, and I think a lot of us do. But I also know how overwhelming it can be and also impossible it is to try and figure out the next right thing when there isn't one. So take this episode as a permission slip. I hope it gives you some freedom.
Remember, there are very, very few situations in life where we're unable to go back and try a different path, so just try something. I know looking back that I often regret the amount of time I spent absolutely agonising over a decision much more than I do the decision I ended up making. Because even with the most detailed plan, it can still turn out completely wild and unexpected. Things very rarely go to plan anyway. So and I say this to myself as much as I do to you. Let's try and spend less time in the really pretty, colourful, lovely planning space, and let's spend more time in the living space. I hope you're having a fabulous start to the week, and I'll see you tomorrow.
