1446: Sorry, but self care really is non-negotiable

As many of us know, burnout is all too real. So if you’re feeling reluctant to stop and take a pause, this episode is for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. So for today's daily pep, I wanted to pop in and remind you that looking after yourself is a non negotiable. Unfortunately, many of us around here aren't strangers to burnout and many of us have learned the shitty way that we have to factor ourselves into the equation. But it can still be so damn hard to do. It is so easy to make a pact with ourselves where we promise ourselves we'll look after ourselves after we've done the thing. But we're multi passionate, we're busy and inevitably our goalposts often move and sometimes that time just doesn't come around. About this time of the year many of us are running on fumes. And often when we're in that place, that's when we convince ourselves there's no possible way we could take a break because everything's piling up on us.

Things are naturally taking longer because we have less brain space and capacity and it all feels really overwhelming. But often that is exactly when you need to take a break or when you need to up your self care rather than cut it down even more. And self care can look like whatever you need in your life. It has become very commercialized, it's very linked to treating ourselves and bubble baths. But it can also look like cancelling plans, half assing where you're able to and daring to put yourself higher up the list. Often taking a break when it feels like that's a really silly or illogical option is not only exactly what our soul needs, but it also means that we go back to things and we are so much more efficient. So the time we actually lost was net zero because we probably would have spent the time that we spent resting, trying to get shit done, not doing a very good job of it, making mistakes and feeling even worse. Now self care is going to look different for you in different seasons.

And I want you to remember that you do not have to defend your definition of self care to anybody. It is not selfish, definitely not a luxury. We all have limitations when it comes to how much time and energy we have. And yes, that can look wildly different from person to person, but it also applies to all of us. And while we're running on fumes, you might be surprised at the power of a small break. But take as much time as you are able to and say no to what's not important and what can wait for another day or what you wish you didn't say yes to in the first place. You're doing better than you think you are. You do not need to earn rest.

And if you are looking for a sign to slow down a bit and take a break. Even if it feels like the last thing you can do, this is it. I'll see you tomorrow.
