1472: Let’s bring back some joy

Today I’ve got a deceptively simple question for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. So today's daily pep is a simple one because I want to ask you one question and it's this. When was the last time you had a really good laugh? Now, if it has been a while, it's time to get some more joy back on your calendar. Message a friend that always cracks you up and tells really good stories. Put on a favourite comedy that never ceases to make you laugh. Go seek out some live comedy. Put on your favorite stand up and if you don't have a favourite stand up, this might be a great excuse to explore. And the reason I'm banging on about laughter today is because it's fucking important.

Especially when things feel hard, when things can feel dark. And it also has amazing benefits for your body. Years ago I trained to be a laughter yoga teacher and one of the most important things we got taught was, apart from the many, many health benefits of laughter, is that your brain can't tell the difference between a real laugh and a fake laugh when it comes to the actual benefits of your body. And I can tell you from plenty of experience, pretending to laugh and feeling like a right weirdo and really awkward while you do it can also be a really good way to get the giggles. I'm a firm believer that joy is an act of rebellion and that we all need more laughter in our lives. Chances are, for many of us, we could probably name the last time that we cried, but not necessarily the last time that we laughed. Or if we can, chances are that when we cried was more recent than when we had a really, really good belly laugh. If you don't know where to begin, just look at laughter yoga on YouTube.

It looks strange to begin with, but it really, really does work. And let's open up the door in our lives to a bit more joy, because fuck knows I think we all need it. So go make yourself laugh, have a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.
