323: Own your process
Your way of doing things only has to make sense to you. Today we've diving into owning your process, the way you work, without the shame or guilt.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. So this week we have been diving into getting going, getting started, finding motivation, and doing our work. And today, I wanna pop in with a reminder that we all need and something that I just don't think we could ever hear enough of, and that is to lean into owning your process. When it comes to getting shit done, you have ways that work for you. You might be somebody that really thrives on a deadline and breaking it down into small tasks, or you might be a bit more last minute.com, which is definitely me. When it comes to getting things done, there are a 1000000 different ways you could do it, and there are also a 1000000 different videos recommending different methods and how things should be done. And I know from experience how easy it is to dive into that rabbit hole. It's And the most important thing is it works for you.
That is all that matters. It doesn't have to make sense for anybody else. It doesn't matter if nobody could follow along with your system if they tried. And frankly, most of the time, it doesn't matter whether people like your system or not. It's about getting to know yourself and knowing how you work. For example, for years, I beat myself up for not being a person that could plan things out in advance and do things in stages so that I could pace myself. It could be less stressful and it didn't come down to the wire. But what I've realized over the last couple of years is that I am somebody who wings it at the last minute.
When I start to prepare too far in advance, I overthink, and I definitely don't do my best work. My perfectionist nature really comes out louder than ever and I get so hung up on the minute details. So for me, I've come to the point where I just have to trust that I will put it out of the bag and remember that when I do it that way, that is often when I do my best work. So today, I wanna invite you to just think about how you do your best work. What is a common thread that comes up for you? And when you're trying to get things done, are you trying to go against what works for you? And make yourself do it in a way that you think you should be doing it. So have a think on that 1 today. There is no right or no wrong answer. Don't aspire to be like anybody else.
Just do it your way Because you have got yourself this far, you've done many, many things, and there will be patterns and ways of working that have worked better than others, and it's time to start exploring that. So fuck what the productivity gurus have to say, fuck really complicated systems if they don't work for you, and own your process. There is nothing wrong with your process like there is nothing wrong with you. So that is all for today. I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. Have a glorious Thursday. And I will see you tomorrow to wrap up this week.

318: Take life notes
Today we're looking at how we can capture the wisdom we gain from going through hard things for our future selves.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Today, we're diving into dealing with hard times, I'm dealing with the overwhelm, and what we can take forward from it. So far on the daily pet this week, We've talked about doing things with more ease and how this season new in right now is temporary, and it won't last forever. Today, I wanna offer up something that can be really helpful both when you're going through a hard time and also figuring out the things that you need for you and the things that you can do to help yourself during hard times. So when we're in the middle of going through something, often the last thing we want to do is focus on the thing and dwell on it. And usually when we're through something, We wanna focus on things not being quite so shit, and we are all too happy to see the back of it. But there is so much wisdom that you can gain from keeping notes during hard times. It doesn't have to be super organized in can be as simple as having an ongoing note on your phone where you just jot down things that you notice.
The notes could be things that you did the turned your day around a bit, it could be lessons you're learning in what you're going through and things that you wanna remember for future hard things or things that might be helpful for other people. It can be permission slips, and it can also be reminders to future you that you know you'll forget if you don't write them down right now. It might not feel that important in the moment, but trust me, it will be a gift a future you because you are building up a resilience toolkit of things that you can come back to that you know work for you. When things go hard, when things get chaotic, when things feel overwhelming and chances are when you go back to that thing, you'll be reading it when you most need it, and you will really appreciate the wisdom from past due. We tend to, for obvious reasons, not really like to go back and face shitty things. But sometimes there are true gems in this shit, and sometimes it's worth sifting through a little bit because you're gonna find things that are gonna be so helpful for the future. So reflect on your hard times as well as your good times. Know that you have much more wisdom than you know.
And if things are looking pretty good right now, write a pep talk for future you, because I think she's gonna really appreciate it. I'll see you back here tomorrow, and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

314: A letter of rebellion
Today we're diving into the idea of living an unabridged life, what that means, and why it's worth sticking with your story.
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. We made it so I thought we'd kick off this Friday with a bit of story time and I'm reading one of the stories I recently wrote as a Letter of Rebellion, which is what I call my Sunday emails. So here we go. When I was younger, one of my favorite parts, if not my favourite part of the week, was my Saturday morning trips to the library with my dad. He'd go looking to find their latest CDs and DVDs and I'd squirrel away to the children's section. I was a huge fan of serialized books like the Baby Sitters Club and I always knew which number I was searching for and it was such a satisfying day when they had the next installment available. But I also love checking out the audiobook section, running my fingers across the titles to see if there were any new ones after exhausting so many of them already. And when I did find one, I hadn't heard.
One of the first things I do is I check the back to see in the fine print if it was abridged or unabridged. I've always loved knowing the whole story and I'd never borrow one if it is abridged because I felt like I was being cheated. The idea of listening to a story with bits left out. Well, it was a hard no from me. And here's the thing we learn as we grow. At times we all wish we could live the abridged versions of our lives. The version where we didn't have to go through painful things. We could skip over chapters we didn't particularly enjoy and get to the exciting parts.
The version where we could soak up all the good things, escape the bad things and and joyfully skip over the bits which are just plain boring. But as much as sometimes I know it would be easier and sometimes it is just so fucking tempting, I have to agree with my nine year old self. It is still a hard no from me. Around here we are truth tellers. We seek out honesty, authenticity, and things that accurately represent what it is to be a human having a human experience. Whether we do it consciously or not. I think we like to see ourselves in things, to see that we do survive and thrive, and to remind ourselves that we're not alone. And we just simply wouldn't be satisfied with the abridged version.
We'd want to know what was missing, we'd want to know the full story, and we would feel cheated if we didn't get it. So to wrap up this week, I want you to be proud of yourself for living the unabridged version, for facing hard things when they happen and doing the best you can. I want you to be proud of staying with the story even when the chapter gets long, the plot gets vague, and you have no idea about the ending. The thing about living the unabridged life is that you get all of the details while the blues are more vivid, the yellows are brighter, and you get the nuance, the context and and all the clues that help you figure out the plot along the way. So whether you are sick to shit of your current chapter, whether the pages are so dog eared and beaten, or whether you're loving the current storyline but wondering what comes around the corner today, I want you to focus on the fact that you're in the story. You're living it, you're sticking with it, come what may. And that takes serious courage. And you have tons of it.
So to my 9 year old stubborn self with her sheep cassette player. To you, wherever you are. Keep going. So that is it for this week's Daily Peps. If you would like to receive letters like the one I just read to you every Sunday in your inbox, make sure you signed up to my Letters of Rebellion by going to the link in the Show Notes or by going to therebelrousers.com and clicking on Sunday Letters. And I can't wait to see you either in your inbox on Sunday or your earbuds or through your speakers on Monday morning. Have a good one. Be really fucking proud of yourself and keep going. See you then.
