954: Maybe YOU have the answers
If you’re constantly looking to Google and self-help books for the answers (no judgement, I’m the same!) this one’s for you (and me!)
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So to wrap up this week, I wanted to pop in with a reminder that I know I'm not a best need and don't always believe. And it is this, You know more than you think you do. I think especially in an age where we can Google everything and there are self help books about Everything under the sun. It can be so easy to believe that other people have the answers. We can convince ourselves that we are one click or 1 chapter Away from something that is gonna solve everything. And even though we know that's not true, it can be so tempting to believe. But the truth is when it comes to most areas of life, especially when it comes to things where we don't know what we're doing Or we're wondering what direction to go in, or we're doubting ourselves in any way.
If we took the time to pause And really ask ourselves either what we already know or what we need to hear. Chances are there would be a hell of a lot of wisdom there, And it would also be way more relevant probably than a lot of the things that we could find on our search. But I think for a lot of us square pegs and round holes, We've been taught that we do things differently, and we see a lot of the ways other people do it. It doesn't work for us, and we think there is a problem on our part. And here's the thing. The truth is you know an awful lot about how you work and what works best for you. And even if that looks like doing things in a way that nobody else does it, that's okay. So my challenge for you is Whatever questions you've got right now, whatever you're thinking about, whatever you're struggling about, just pause and ask yourself what you already know about it, What you would tell a friend and what you most need to hear, and see if there's some wisdom there.
And I am very, very, very certain that there is a fuckload of wisdom there And that you might have at least part of, if not all, of the answer. So here's to pausing and reflecting. Have a good one. I can't wait to be back with you bright and early on Monday morning. And in the meantime, remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

951: It's okay to take inspiration
If you're feeling creatively stuck or have a project you want to start, today we're turning to Austin Kleon for some much needed wisdom!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So one of the people I find the most inspiring is Austin Kleon. Including steal like an artist, show your work, and keep going. And I recommend them, and I do recommend them Thoroughly. And the reason I bring him up is that yesterday, we were diving into not always having to reinvent the wheel. And something Austin Kleon says is so relevant to this topic. And it's his idea of steal like an artist. And what he means by that is get inspired.
There is no true work that is original Because so much of it has come from random flashes of inspiration from other people's work, and it's how we put our own slant on it that makes it ours. And he also has this thing where he talks about our creative lineage. And I'm a huge fan of the idea that You have all of these experiences, these stories, perspectives, values, and inspirations that nobody else has, And it is your exact combination of that which is what makes you truly unique. So whether you're starting a creative project Or you're talking yourself out of starting 1, whether you're right in the thick of it or you're nearly at the end. Today, I want to remind you that it's okay to take inspiration from other people and remix it. In his book, Still Like an Artist, Austin dives into what he considers good theft and bad theft. And as long as you're not degrading, Stealing from 1 person, plagiarizing, imitating, or rip off, and instead you're honoring, you're studying, you're stealing from many you You're stealing from many. You're giving credit.
You're transforming and remixing. You are all good. Everyone gets inspired by different things. And often our work becomes a massive amalgamation Of so many of the things that we've been consuming, thinking about, and learning, and I think it's about remembering that it's okay for that to be the Case, and that is normal. The pressure to come up with something entirely original sucks the creativity out of any project And also massively feeds our perfectionism. So go get inspiration and take inspiration. Quit putting this pressure on yourself to be completely original, and know that the things you do are original Because you do do them in the ways that only you can do them, and that is simply baked into the process already. So that is my food for thought for you this Tuesday.
Look at the tiny things for inspiration, And I hope you have a fabulous start to your day. See you bright and early tomorrow morning as always.

950: If in doubt, Betty Crocker it!
If you always feel an urge to reinvent the wheel, today I'm giving you a huge permission slip!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So around here, we are people who try Really damn hard. And we also have dream shitters that tell us that we're lazy. And a lot of the time, it can feel like 1 big battle. One of the ways that I think this can really come out is how often we feel like we need to reinvent the wheel. It doesn't really matter what we're doing or whether it is in our zone of genius or not. Often, the easiest way just isn't an option, And we convince ourselves that we have to start from scratch. But today, I want to give you a huge permission slip just to Betty Crocker it.
Now I am not a baker. I love eating cake. I love thinking about making cake. But the actual process itself, I find nigh on infuriating. I make so much mess. I have so much to clean up. I inevitably burn something, And I hate whisking stuff. And that for me is where Betty Crocker comes into it.
Because honestly, I don't think it is possible to fuck up a Betty Crocker cake. And pro tip, if 1 year, for example, your oven just stops working, It is possible to microwave them and have a very, very edible cake. Now I've made quite a few Betty Crocker Cakes over the years, And not once has anybody accused me of cheating. Everybody I've baked a cake for has been more than happy. They've been really touched that I went to the effort. And it's been a job well done. And I think we could apply this so much to our lives. For a lot of us, we think that in order to show our love or to be thoughtful, we have to go to the end of the Earth for people.
But as eye roll worthy as it is, it really is the thought that counts. And the same way with creative projects, Even if there is an easier way to get started, our brains can convince us that we need to do absolutely everything from scratch Or it doesn't count. And we're kicking off this week with a huge dose of fuck that. You do not have to reinvent the wheel, And you certainly don't have to reinvent the wheel in areas of your life that aren't your forte Or that you have no real desire to get a huge amount better at. I've said this many times and I'll continue to say it many, many more times. The things that we can do to make things easier and the shortcuts we can take really don't make us lazy, But they're actually incredibly smart and strategic. So in case you need this reminder right now, stop reinventing the wheel. Try and make things easier for yourself.

939: Have your own back
If you’re giving yourself a hard time, and you're sick of beating yourself up, I’ve got a bit of a challenge for you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. It is nearly the end of the week, if you need a reminder to be that bit more compassionate to yourself and to stop beating yourself up, you are in the right place. So I've got a pretty complicated relationship with Teamwork. In that, I don't really like being told what to do. I also don't like conflict. Red tape and bureaucracy really, really wind me up. And I'm also pretty intimidated by authority figures. Add on to the fact that I don't like awkward silences and I'm pretty bossy, It is quite the relationship.
Now we've all got different relationships with different teams that we're on, and I think it's fair to say And here that we have a lot of experiences, but we also really try to do our best. We're pretty conscientious. We try to contribute. And while we might not all be the world's best team players, we're not ticks. And the reason I bring this up is because I think it's time that we get To be on our own team as well. We spend so much of our time fighting ourselves, beating ourselves up, Then beating ourselves up about beating ourselves up and going back to the whole being a dick thing, I think sometimes we can be a bit of a dick to ourselves. So my challenge for you today is not to become your very own best teammate, but to be on your side a little bit more. Because you, my dear, are trying your best.
And is there more you could be doing? Probably, and that's true for all of us. But at what cost? Your best is gonna look different on different days. And I guarantee you That even if like me you have a complicated relationship with teamwork, you do not treat anybody in a team the way you treat yourself. So it might be helpful to think of somebody that you've really enjoyed working with, or it might be worth thinking of who your ideal collaboration partner would be, What qualities they'd have, and see if you can apply some of that to yourself. Like I just said, you do not have to be your own best teammate, But we can do better for ourselves, and we deserve better. So see if you can try and have your back a bit more today. As cheesy as it is, remember that the relationship you have with yourself is the most important relationship that you're gonna have. You don't have to change it overnight.
This is not something to beat yourself up about. Just have a bit of a think about how you can be more on your own side. So get thinking, have a good one, and keep going.

934: The truth about tiny flaws
Today I’m sharing a truth about perfectionism, inspired by a recent discovery!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So I've been thinking a lot about perfectionism lately, especially as I am seriously getting in my own way. And I noticed something this week that was just Such a good reminder to me, and I wanted to share it with all of you. So to help me sleep, I listened to white noise. And I must have listened to the same track Literally thousands and thousands of times over the last couple of years. I've got a specific track I listen to on repeat. It's the sound of an oscillating fan. And I swear, it also fools my brain into thinking the fan's on because it helps me feel cooler, But that is another rabbit hole in and of itself.
So the track must run at about 4 minutes. And the other night, I suddenly realized that it's probably the same 32nd clip on repeat. And if you listen, you can hear where it stops and when it starts. And as I was led there, noticing it, it really got me thinking. And mainly about the fact that whenever we do creative work or whenever we do work of any kind, all we can tend to see are the flaws. The things that might not even register as errors to people even when we point them out tend to feel hugely obvious to us and can become the only thing that we can see. And we can see it because we're so close to it. Chances are we're also emotionally invested.
We also probably care what other people think, or we care how it'll be received, And we wanna do our best. But chances are people aren't even noticing what you think are huge glaring flaws. It took me literally over 2 years of listening to the same track every single night to realize that there is an editing flaw. So let this be a reminder to you that when your perfectionism is really kicking in And you are focusing on the minute details, maybe they don't really matter. Maybe it would take somebody 2 years to figure out that tiny thing. And chances are, they wouldn't even give a fuck. I know for me, when I've been led in bed, can't sleep, And listen to it, I have not been trying to find the flaws or try and find the faults with it. I've just been led there frustrated that I can't get to sleep of trying to figure out how I'm gonna get back to sleep.
So let that be a lesson to all of us. Here's to remembering what I know we already intellectually know, That perfection doesn't exist in the 1st place. And remembering that tiny things that we do wrong, flaws or imperfections, They don't ruin anything. Chances are, most of the time, people don't even notice. See you on Monday.

930: Where can you add some crispy onions?
Sometimes life can feel a little stale and in need of a little something to jazz it up, if that sounds like you - I’ve got you covered!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. Whether you are Feeling it or whether you're feeling shit, The Daily Pep is here to help you start your day with a compassionate mind. So one of the things that we've Been really enjoying lately is trying new food. We have been trying lots of new recipes. We finally figured out how to create a tasty stir fry. And something we are really loving adding to every rice noodle dish, which is pretty much a lot of what we eat, is crispy onions. Now I'm not pretending crispy onions are a new thing, but they're a new thing for us. There's something about them and the texture that simply works.
Now as you might be able to imagine, if you've been around here for a little while, I love a metaphor. And while I do genuinely fucking love those crispy onions, I'm really interested in the crispy onions of our own life if you have it. You know I like to get cheesy and I'm leaning into it. It is so easy to get stuck in a rut, and it is so easy for things to feel a bit stale or to feel a bit bland. And sometimes we just need the extra texture or something something in our lives to make it feel a bit fresh, a bit new, or to add a bit of joy. So my question to kick off this week is if you look at your day to day life and the things that you do a lot. Now we're not trying to get bogged down into what habits and routines we want to have, but we're looking at what we actually do, and we're doing that without blame or shame. Where is there space in your own life to add some crispy onions? This doesn't necessarily have to mean going to buy something. It can just be adding a layer of texture or some more niceness to stuff you already do. That could look like getting to bed 10 minutes early with a really good book. It could look like adding some more podcast to your morning routine. That is definitely what I'm doing. It could be taking a different route to somewhere you go regularly or adding something nice on top of something that you tend to do a lot. Now to be clear, what we are not doing is we're not trying to make it Instagramable. We're not trying to make it fancy. We're simply trying to add a bit of joy In terms of what feels joyful to us.
And like I've said before, a lot of us struggle with the concept of joy and what our own unique joy is. And this could also be a fun way to find that out. So as you go about your day today, be on the lookout for opportunities for crispy onions. You don't have to do all of them. I definitely recommend starting with 1 and starting small. But consciously look for where you could put them, And I think you might be pleasantly surprised. And chances are, whatever ideas you had pop into your head as you listen to this, they might be a good place to start, so here's to adding in some magic to the mundane.
Here's to finding and adding our own version of crispy onions, And here's to finding some unexpected joy today. I'll see you tomorrow.
