1382: Let’s start with dessert!

Today's episode is inspired by the wonderful Barbra Streisand, and we're taking an unconventional approach to getting sh*t done!

Episode transcript:

Good morning daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So as part of my latest project, the Hope revival, I really enjoyed putting together an eclectic mix of quotes and I thought I would share one of them today as a humpty reminder that we get to do the good things first. So the quote is from the fabulous Barbra Streisand, who says, life's too short. Start with dessert. And it really got me thinking about how much we put off the stuff that maybe we really want to do. Until we've done the practical things, until we've reached the end of our to do list, it always feels like the right choice and the right thing to do. But I don't know about you, but by the time I've done all of the shoulds, and let's face it, not that many of them are completely world endingly important, I have run out of energy for the things that I really wanted to do. Or to kind of relate it back to the quote, I'm way too full for dessert.

And when you do that over a long period of time, life can stop feeling satisfying and it can just feel like one big massive to do list. And the irony here is that actually if we did some of the things we're looking forward to first, we'd probably have more energy and less resistance to doing the things that we don't want to do. We might not feel quite so resentful and they might be easier lifts because we're more resourced. As humans, we all know that there is never going to be a time where we have done absolutely everything and there is no perfect moment where we're suddenly going to feel free to do all the things we want to do without having a nagging feeling at the back of our head of the things that we should be doing. So I say fuck it. Let's experiment with starting with dessert first. And like, desserts can be wildly rich and sometimes you don't need that much of them. You might be surprised that actually doing a little of what you've been wanting to do makes a massive impact on your everyday life and how you feel about doing everything else.

So often we're telling ourselves subconsciously or consciously that our needs can wait. We can wait. We just need to get the important things out of the way. But what if for once, we are the important thing and it's a non urgent stuff on our to do list that can wait. So that's my food for thought for you today. Happy hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.

1381: In praise of sh*tty photos

For today's episode we're exploring the magic in the mundane, and the power of capturing the boring!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. I shared a couple of weeks ago that we are preparing to set off for long term travel again and I've been thinking a lot about the lessons we've learned along the way and one of the things I've really grown to value is the shit Almost meaningless photos. Let me explain. So I am self confessed not a great photographer. I tend to snap and go and not really think too much about it. If it is a particularly pretty view I will take multiple photos. But generally when I scroll back through my camera roll a lot of things are wonky and there's also just a lot of random shit. And honestly it is the photos of random shit that I tend to value more than the really beautiful ones.

Because for me, photos are really about jogging my memory. As we've been getting ready to move from our lovely flattened leads, I've been taking pictures of the mundane views I see every day. They're not particularly attractive, they're not particularly well photographed, but prompts for things that I just don't want to forget and everyday moments. I'm not just taking pictures of the flat when it looks really nice, but also when it looks a massive mess because as I zoom in I can see things that remind us of different stuff we've done and just funny things. And I much prefer that and value that more than a highly curated photo that looks fabulous. It looks great but doesn't come with so much meaning. So my pep talk for you today is to take the shit photos, the boring photos, as a way of capturing your life right now and being able to look back on it exactly as it was and put yourself in that place and that time. Often it is so easy to only take photos when you're doing something out of the ordinary, when something looks particularly impressive or on special occasions.

But like most of us know the tiny moments, the boring moments, we often look back on them and they are the most magical and our life doesn't have to be this curated showreel all the highlights, but it can be the messy thing that it is and maybe that's where the beauty lies. So here's to recognizing the magical and the mundane, knowing that sometimes they're the same thing, and appreciating the everyday moments because those might be the things that you really want to look back on. Have a fabulous Tuesday and I'll see you tomorrow.

1380: A compassionate approach to trying your best

What if trying your best isn't a fixed point, and you met yourself where you are? That's what we're kicking off the week with on today's episode!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So one of my favorite sayings that I repeated a lot earlier on in The Daily Pep, but I feel like it would be a good one to come back to, is this idea that your best doesn't look the same every day. Think of it a bit like this. If you're packing for a holiday, you can have a good idea of what the climate's going to be, what the weather will be like, but you don't know it for sure. So you pack quite a few different variations. You might have different layers, you might have things that you suspect you won't need, but you'd rather take just in case. And that's all part of the process. You have hopes, but you also know that sometimes your expectations aren't met and you'd rather be a bit prepared. Yet how often do we do that with our own days? I know for me, if I have a really productive day, rather than savoring it for what it is, I immediately build the expectation on this being my new normal. And when I fall short, which I often do, I use it as another stick to beat myself with.

And I've got a feeling a lot of us might be pretty good at that around here. Using our successes and our wins as a way to push ourselves harder and putting the bar even higher. But the same way you'd pack a variety of clothes for holiday. There are so many different ways to have a day, both on your holiday and just in everyday life. Sometimes there's a storm that just comes out of nowhere other days it's just pleasantly nice and you're surprised, and other days you're just not really feeling it, regardless of what the weather is outside. And that's okay. So as we kick off a brand new week, I invite you to think about having different definitions of success for yourself on different days. For example, knowing that it's going to take a hell of a lot longer to get stuff done when you're burnt out than when you're not and just thinking about what it looks like to align your days a bit more with your energy levels and your own internal weather. Some days, your best days, look like thriving, sometimes they look like surviving. And I think one thing that could help all of us is trying to remove the moral judgment from them. We all have different days. We're not a better person because we get more shit done and our self worth is not reliant on our productivity.

So check in with your own internal weather today and dress accordingly. Plan accordingly and meet yourself where you are rather than where you think you should be. Have a good one, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1379: In praise of imperfect hope

Together we're rebelling against perfectionism, getting out of our own heads and finding easy ways to make the world a brighter place.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. So behind the scenes we're in the process of going back to long term traveling and leaving our lovely flat in Leeds. Now, we have moved at this point many, many times and we probably consider ourselves pros at it. And what we've learned is that it is actually pretty impossible to have a completely stress free and tidy move. There have been times where we prepared for moving months in advance, there's times that we've done it weeks in advance and everywhere in between. And we've just come to the conclusion that moving is messy. There are so many moving parts, pun intended. There is as much as you try for there not to be, always going to be a box of crap which is just full of things that you've got no idea what to do with.

And it doesn't really matter how much you prepare, there are always going to be surprises along the way. And I'm sharing this today for two reasons. Firstly, because I feel like so many of us have been around here for a little while and we've been on this journey together and I wanted to share a personal update as I kind of consider you all my virtual travel buddies. And second, as a reminder, a permission slip or something you just really fucking need to hear right now that life is sometimes messy. And that's okay. You're not doing it wrong, it's just messy. Believe me, I have tried so many different ways to do this whole moving process more efficiently. And often it doesn't matter how long you give yourself, there's always a bit of a last minute scramble because you naturally forget some things.

And that is because we are fabulously imperfect humans with a lot going on in our brains at the same time. So as you head into this weekend, see what happens. If you can remember that some things are just messy and, and that's okay. And also there is such a thing as over optimizing and being too efficient to the fact that we get so obsessed with doing things quicker that we lose all the joy along the way. Have a good one, stay hydrated, keep as cool as you can. And I hope some unexpected delight finds you this weekend. I can't wait to be back with you as always on Sunday in your inbox or on Monday in your earbuds. I'll see you then, take care.

1377: A hopeful hump day reminder

For a lot of us, feeling hopeless can feel really hard and kick off an existential crisis. If you can relate, this one’s for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. In celebration of the launch of my latest project and summer Advent calendar, the Hope Revival. This week on the Daily prep it is officially Hope Weekly. And it's also a Wednesday. And on some hump days I tend to be sassier than others. And I've got a feeling this might be a bit of a sassy one. So I've obviously been thinking about hope a hell of a lot lately. And I think feeling hopeless has a lot in common with feeling like shit.

And one of the things I know a lot of us do when we feel like shit is we give ourselves a hard time for feeling like shit and it ends up being a bit of a shitty spiral. So today I simply want to remind you that it is okay if you're not feeling that full of hope at the moment. There are so many reasons why and it is really understandable. It's not a particularly pleasant place to be, but I'd say it's pretty natural. And it's also pretty natural for a lot of us around here who are very values driven to have a bit of an existential crisis when we don't feel that hopeful. And that doesn't really make us feel that much better. But here's the thing. Yesterday we were talking about how important it is to keep your own light lit.

And I think that fire and that light metaphor is really, really important. Because sometimes it is going to feel like a really faint flicker, other times it's going to burn really bright. Many a time it might feel a bit like a half assed candle. And all of that is okay. We can't force ourselves to feel something that we don't feel. And that is why I rally so hard against toxic positivity and this whole good vibes only bullshit. So what if today and this week you met yourself where you're at rather than where you think you should be? What if it's okay to not feel that hopeful and maybe intentionally going out to find some things that reignite your hope and maybe do a random act of kindness to a stranger or a loved one as a reminder that you do have power and that there are things in your control? I know that I seriously struggle with feeling hopeless and it is not a nice place to be. But I have to remind myself that it is temporary to really try and focus on the small everyday things and appreciate that things that might usually feel easy don't feel easy and give myself grace and celebrate the tiny wins.

Each day in the Hope Revival, you receive a really helpful mini delight. And you also get a quote for inspiration for the day, and this one feels particularly relevant. It is by the wonderful Barbara Sher, who says life isn't supposed to be an all or nothing battle between misery and bliss. Life isn't supposed to be a battle at all. And when it comes to happiness, well, sometimes life is just okay. Sometimes it's comfortable, sometimes wonderful, sometimes boring, sometimes unpleasant. When your day is not perfect, it's not a failure or a terrible loss. It's just another day.

I know I'll be taking that with me today. I hope you do too. I hope you find some unexpected joy today. And I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. See you then.

1376: On keeping your own light lit

For today's episode we're diving into why keeping your own light lit is the opposite of selfish, and leaning into what we know works for us.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. This week here on the Daily Pep to celebrate my latest project, the Hope Revival. It is officially Hope Week, and today we are talking about keeping our own lights lit. So often when it comes to making the world a brighter place, we think about all the things that we want to do in benefit of others. We think about who needs our help, how could we give it to them, and what part we could play in making the world a little bit kinder. The thing is though, often we forget that we play a huge role in that. And while we might have the best intentions when it comes to helping other people, if we don't also help ourselves, that can have not so great consequences. I'd imagine that burnout is pretty familiar among us around here.

And I don't know about you, but I have definitely over committed to many things in my life. And again, I did it with the best of intentions. But there's definitely been times where I've ended up letting people down because I haven't been honest to myself about my own bandwidth. And that is a really hard one for a lot of us to accept. And also I didn't want to let other people down. And the irony is, by saying yes to too many things, I ended up letting people down. Anyway, yesterday we talked about how hope is not a fluffy thing. And the idea of us keeping our own light lit isn't fluffy either.

It's not kind of some added extra. It's not a nice to have. It's certainly not selfish, but very essential if we want to keep going. And also if we want to have some joy in our own lives. There tend to be some things that really fan the flame more than others. So for today's episode, I really want to invite you to think about what are the things that you need to keep yourself going, what are the things that fuel you? And they don't have to be impressive, they don't have to help anybody else, and they might not make sense to anybody else. And that's kind of the point of it. It only has to work for you.

I often say that the magic happens in the intersection of the things that light ourselves up and light other people up. And if you've only got the bandwidth for one, start with what lights you at first, because joy and courage tend to be very infectious. And what if we could change the world not by completely depleting our own resources and burning ourselves out, but by pouring into ourselves and being fully ourselves. And today's quote is in honour of and in memory of the fabulous late Andrea Gibson, who wrote, “I know you think this world is too dark to even dream in colour. But I've seen flowers bloom at midnight. I've seen kites fly in grey skies. And they were real close to looking like the sunrise. And sometimes it takes the most wounded wings, the most broken things to notice how strong the breeze is, how precious the flight.”

Here's to holding onto hope. And I'll see you tomorrow.

1375: Hope is not some fluffy thing

We're kicking off Hope Week here on the Daily Pep! by remembering just how important hope is, and reclaiming it in a pessimistic world.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. To celebrate the launch of my summer Advent calendar, the Hope Revival. This week's episodes are all Hope related and my hope is that they help you feel seen and heard, remind you that there is good in the world, and they also feel like a hug in a mug to listen to. So around here, we are people who really give a shit. We are values driven, we are kind, we are compassionate, and we want to leave the world a brighter place than how we found it. And it often feels like we are swimming against the tide. You have some people in very powerful positions making some really, to put it mildly, fucking awful decisions. There is definitely a smell of apathy in the air.

And you also have those people who would call those of us who are really driven by our values and want to live in a brighter world, who might call us optimists and dreamers. And for today's episode, I just really want to rally against this idea that hope is a fluffy thing, that it's some pie in the sky idea, that it doesn't really matter, that it's a nice to have and it is just wishful thinking. I call serious, serious bullshit on that because we have seen so many of the good things happen in the world start with people who do have hope and do have a belief that the world can be different. Every single day, people's lives are drastically changed for the better by people who can see that there's another way, by people who haven't been beaten down by cynicism, and also everyday tiny little moments of human kindness and connection by everyday people all over the world. Now, I don't know about you, but that does not feel like some small feat. It doesn't sound fluffy. Rather, it sounds like not only the lifeblood of our societies and communities, but also a pretty simple baseline of how we could all be in the world. We all know that the tiniest things can make the biggest difference.

And if you're not feeling very hopeful lately or you're just feeling plain exhausted, know that you being you makes a difference in the world whether or not you can see it. Change happens in ripples. And many a time we can't see the ripples that we've started. But that doesn't mean they're not there. Hope is not some fluffy thing and we get to claim it as the important thing. It is whether or not other people agree with us or shame us for it. It can really suck when other people don't get us, but know that there is literally a whole world of us out there who do value hope, kindness and community and rebelliously hold on to what you know really matters. I'm going to round off every episode of the Daily Pep this week with a hopeful quote.

And I have found so many beautiful ones as I've been putting together the Hope revival. And one of the things I decided to do is that on every door you unlock, you also have a piece of inspiration for the day. And just collecting them and curating them in itself was so soul affirming, it may come as no surprise that today's quote comes from the one and only Dolly Parton. And she says, and she says, we can't just hope for a brighter day. We, we have to work for a brighter day. Love too often gets buried in a world of hurt and fear. And we have to work to dig. And we have to work to dig it out so we can share it with our family, our friends and our neighbours. So you keep doing, you keep going, my loves, and don't let the bastards grind you down.

1374: Accept the mess

1371: This one’s for all us time optimists!

If, like me, your perception of time is a little bit wonky, today's episode is a very compassionate reality check!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, I am what I would call a time optimist. What I believe I could do in 30 minutes is nothing short of superhuman, and it is also wildly inaccurate. I remember driving home from a doctor's appointment one day and I had half an hour until my next thing and I looked at Mr. Meg and I said, right in my head, I believe that we've got enough time to to stop in Aldi and do a quick shop. Also stop in the charity shop nearby, grab a quick coffee from the coffee shop that's on our walk on the way back from the car and still have a good five minutes before my next thing started. And I think in that moment it dawned on him how my brain works and just how time optimistic I am. And I think it explained a lot.

I know I am far from alone in this. I'm not quite sure if I have adhd, so I'm gonna call it maybe hd. But I know time optimism is a very real thing for me, and if you can hard relate, then you might want to join me in my challenge today. And that is going through my to do list and allocating time slots for everything I think I'm gonna get done and see how much it actually adds up to. Knowing that most things tend to take twice as long as we imagine. Whether we're time optimists or time pessimists. It can be a really kind thing to do for yourself to look at everything you've put on your plate and see if it is actually physically possible or if we've accidentally slipped into superhuman territory. It can be a great way of not beating ourselves up because we realise, to quote my favourite Emily MacDowell quote, that maybe it's not a personal failure, but an impossible setup.

So go get the things you've got planned for today. Allocate each task a certain amount of minutes, double it and add it up, and then start deferring. Maybe it's not just okay that you don't get everything done today, but maybe it's to be expected. So let's try to be a bit kinder and fairer to ourselves, see how it goes, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1370: Give yourself room at the table

Today we’re kicking this week off with perhaps a confronting, but very helpful question that many of us can struggle with.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So I want to kick off this week with a slightly challenging question, which is what would happen if you put yourself first this week? Now, for so many of us, we have many complicated feelings when it comes to putting ourselves first. And for many of us, we kind of put ourselves last by autopilot. Many of us who were socialized as girls, well, we were conditioned and we were taught to put everybody before ourselves. We were taught to prioritize other people's happiness in many overt and covert ways. We were taught to take up less space. And this idea of putting ourselves first was selfish and just wrong. And along the way, I think a lot of us just took ourselves out of the equation completely.

So what would it look like to put yourself first this week? Would the world genuinely stop turning? Would it make you into a completely selfish bitch? Now, I know the answer to both of those things is a definite no. I'm not gonna lie. It might feel uncomfortable. Some people might be a bit taken aback. But even just thinking about putting yourself first and where you tend to put yourself in the pecking order of life, it might be quite illuminating. We know that we have to put our own oxygen masks on first, but many of us find that really hard to follow. Yet we're so focused on all the bad shit that could come from putting ourselves first that we forget that there is even good shit to begin with. We might actually gain some time for ourselves.

We might actually be more pleasant people to be around. We might be breaking cycles and modeling the behavior to other people who really need it. And we might just like our lives a little bit more. So I say give it a go. If it feels scary, start with something really, really small. Or if you feel like going balls for the wall, go for it. Pick the safest place to start. Experiment.

Gather some evidence that the world doesn't end, and bet on yourself for once. Remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. And I can't wait to be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning.

1369: Remove the unnecessary steps

Inspired by my view while recording this episode, today we're identifying our own unnecessary steps.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. We have made it. Now, as I sit and record the daily prep, I'm sitting in front of my window and one of the things I can see, apart from a very industrial view of Leeds, a gate. Now, I use this gate all the time and what I realized recently is that there is a button next door to the gate. And the button it does absolutely fuck all. If you were coming up on this gate for the first time, you would assume you need to press this button in order to get it to release. And you would probably think that it did work because the gate would open. But here's the thing, the gate opens anyway.

And the reason I'm sharing this pretty boring story about a gate today, and if you've listened for more than five minutes, you'll know that there's going to be a barmy metaphor in here, it is because I want us to think about the unnecessary steps that we take in things that maybe we do every day. I know I am the queen over complicating things, and I know sometimes adding in steps can make my brain feel super productive, but they're often unnecessary. So I want you to think about your own life and your own imaginary gait and have a think about if you have any unnecessary buttons. Do you have any arbitrary rules that you have to do something before you do something else that actually doesn't really help? Are there any things that you do maybe once a week, once a month that you add unnecessary steps to or you're perhaps too perfectionist about and the things you're adding to it don't actually matter? Where are some situations where you could just open the gate and go through it rather than wasting your precious time and energy pressing a button that doesn't need to be pressed?

And I'm not talking about this from the perspective of trying to become as efficient and as productive as possible, but rather reclaiming your time and energy for the things that actually matter and giving some of you back to you. Whatever you've got going on this weekend, I hope you find some unexpected joy and delight. And I look forward to being back with you in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my fabulous email community, or in those lovely lugholes on Monday, back for a brand new episode of the Daily Pep. I'll see you then.

1367: You matter (even when it’s inconvenient)

Today's episode is a bit silly, but it's pretty damn powerful!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you and a very happy hump day. So I've got a bit of a silly one for you today and one I'm hoping gives you a couple of ahas. So a couple of minutes ago I was sitting here ready to press play, I've got my headphones on, the microphone is all plugged in, I'm nice and comfy and ready to go. And I realized that I really need a wee. Not desperate, but the need is definitely there. And my automatic thought was, cool, okay, I'll just do this, then I'll take care of that. Because I'm all set up and ready to go and it'd just be really inconvenient to stop right now. And then I realized that is not a very helpful message to send myself.

Especially as I'm starting to realise in my own life that one of my biggest fears and one of my biggest self protective patterns is I feel like I'm an inconvenience. I tend to place small, I tend to put other people's needs in front of my own and I just don't want to inconvenience anybody. And so in that very little moment, I realized that I had a choice. I could either push through against what my body was saying and not be an inconvenience to myself and get it done and wait to have a wee till after, or I could just listen to myself, listen to my body and get up and have a fucking wee. And the reason I'm sharing this today is that so many of us are taught to override our own needs. I know I'm not the only one that worries about being inconvenient. I worry about getting in the way. And I'm kind of sick of treating my body like it is an inconvenience as well.

We are humans, we have needs. And if you've been here for more than about three episodes, you'll know that I am very big on this idea that everything changes when you believe you matter. And I think one of the ways that we can show ourselves we matter is by listening to those needs when we hear them. Even if it is as silly as listening to your body the first time you need a wee rather than holding on for a more convenient time and only going when you're desperate. This can apply to so many other things in your life, but for now let's just start with the weeing. I told you it was going to be a silly one. I hope it's been helpful and I'll See you tomorrow.

1366: Get the crumbs out

It's time to let go of old priorities and lighten your load!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. If you ever get stuck comparing yourself to other people, if there are certain people that you're really jealous of, this one is for you. So it's often said that comparison is the thief of joy. And while I'm not disagreeing with that entirely, one of the things I'm really curious about is how we can use comparison to our own benefit. Because here's the thing, we all compare ourselves to other people, and at some point or another, there are going to be people that you are wildly jealous of or a little bit jealous of. So to just set matters straight to begin with, that is a human thing. There is nothing wrong with you. So if you give yourself a hard time around this, know that you're not alone.

And in fact, I think our sense of comparison and jealousy can be used as a bit of a compass, because generally, if you take time to figure out what are the themes that keep coming up, you can use them as really good clues about where to go next or maybe what's missing in your own life. And this is where we also put our fabulous creative brains to use, because jealousy and comparison are also pretty nuanced. Let's say you see somebody really toned and you feel a sense of jealousy. Maybe it's not as overt as you also want a six pack, but rather maybe you really want to start working on your own health journey a bit and show up for yourself a bit more. So what I'm saying here is that what you're jealous of might not be directly what you want in your life, and it really is worth kind of digging for the nuance a bit and actually spending a bit of time digging into and getting curious about who you're comparing yourself to and what are the different things that are coming up and using them as clues, especially as you're feeling lost in the artist's way. Julia Cameron talks about jealousy and she has got this fabulous quote, which is jealousy is a map. It tells us with excruciating precision just where and what we earn. So for today's daily pep, let's quit judging ourselves for comparing ourselves or being jealous of somebody else and use it to our own personal gain.

Use it as a way of getting curious about where we want to go. Also, have your bullshit filter turned all the way up, because chances are your dream jitter is going to have a lot to say on this and use it as a map. Now, if you're somebody that doesn't get jealous a lot, and I definitely fall into that category. And I'm not saying that to be holier than thou, it's just a fact. I don't tend to jealous. What I do find really interesting is when I do, that's when my curiosity really sparks and I get quite excited because there's something there and it tends to lead me towards something that I've not been thinking of or a clue of where I want to go that I might not have been previously aware of. So wherever you fall on the jealousy and comparison scale, give yourself grace. Try to choose curiosity over judgment and what you find might be quite exciting. I'll see you tomorrow. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1365: Outgrowing past versions of ourselves

For today's Daily Pep, we're diving into outgrowing past versions of ourselves and why that's not only valid, but to be expected!

Episode transcript:

Good morning daily peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So I thought I'd kick off this week by sharing with you something that I always find really reassuring and takes the pressure off, but I definitely don't hear enough from the world around me. And it's that you are allowed to outgrow things. You are allowed to outgrow past versions of yourself, you are allowed to outgrow things that used to really matter to you, you're allowed to outgrow goals, and you are allowed to change as a person. In a world that often feels unpredictable, the only predictable thing is change. Yet so often, whether because of our own inner dream shitter or because of external dreamshitters, we can end up feeling a bit like a photograph in terms of a single moment captured in time, even if it doesn't reflect our internal world and all the things we've gone through. I think it can also be quite tricky if we're multi passionate because chances are when we have changed, we've had those comments from well meaning and sometimes not well meaning people in our lives of oh, I thought you were into this thing. Oh, you're starting something new.

I wonder how long this phase is going to last for. Comments like that can really haunt us and we forget that curiosity is our superpower and for a lot of us, we're just trying to make the most of this wild and precious life we have. You are allowed to change. You're allowed to evolve, you are allowed to take a new picture. And if your picture is currently in a dark room being developed and you can't make out the picture, then join the club. A lot of us are right there with you. You do not owe anybody in your life past versions of yourself or versions of yourself that they wish existed. We are all evolving.

We are all changing. And if you listen to this thinking, actually I don't really want to change anything at the moment. Please do not go down the rabbit hole of thinking you need to change something and instead see that as a really good thing. Here's to us, here's to our evolving definitions and I'll see you tomorrow.

1364: In defence of rabbit holes

This one’s for you if you’ve ever felt or been called flaky. Let’s ditch the guilt around unfinished projects and rabbit holes, and celebrate being multi-passionate instead!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Now, as multi passionates, we often go through phases. We get really into something for a set period of time and then maybe go off it. And it's fair to say that a lot of us do carry this weight with us of this fear of being flaky, the ghosts of projects past. We have a lot of feelings about our ability to finish things and follow through. And in the process, we inadvertently deprive ourselves of a lot of joy. I know for myself, I often get caught up in in the tangibles. I have to know that if I'm working on something that I intend to finish it.

There has to be a point to it. And it's almost like everything I do, I'm trying to set out to prove a point to myself that I can commit and I can follow through. So if you're anything like me and you can relate to any of this, today's episode is a rallying cry to let ourselves go down the rabbit holes and do the seemingly pointless shit and actually enjoy our creativity too. I know when I was a teenager, I would get lost in building beautiful rooms on the Sims, and I never gave myself a hard time for committing some time to doing something purely for the fun of it. Yet if I was to do that now, it would feel like a real challenge. And I just say, fuck that. We get to have fun too. We get to do the pointless shit. And not everything we do has to be tangible, measurable, or for a purpose. We get to have a Pinterest board dedicated to the most outrageous version of our dream house. We get to spend time going down rabbit holes of things that we've got no idea how we got into, we've got no idea how we're going to practically put it to use. But we're simply enjoying learning. And the irony of this is that if we can give ourselves that permission not just to do really practical things that have got a point or are going to move us forward, then we're probably also going to top ourselves up and find a lot more enthusiasm for the things that we do want to finish. By not depriving ourselves, we're likely going to find ourselves more motivated, more focused, and we might come across some real treasure along the way. The thing about creativity is that it is about going down rabbit holes. It is about starting things and moving on to something wildly different.

It is all part of the process. And if we lived in a world that saw it as part of the process rather than demonized it, I wonder where we would be. So that is my food for thought for you this weekend. Go do the apparently pointless stuff. Go enjoy yourself and know that in some weird way or another, it all feeds into each other. I hope you find some unexpected joy this weekend. Have a good one, and I look forward to seeing you on Sunday in your inbox if you're part of my email community. Or on Monday, right back here for a new episode of the Daily Pep. Take care.

1362: Let’s add some joy!

Today we’re getting practical! I’ve got a fun quest to give you some hope over the next couple of months.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. So today's episode is incredibly practical and I've got a bit of a challenge or some actions for you to do we're doing. The action itself is just as juicy as the benefit. I know we've all got a shit ton to do, so don't worry, this is a fun one. So today or tomorrow, I want you to find one thing to look forward to for each of the next three months. As I'm recording this, it is just the start of summer and maybe you're listening to this as we're entering a different season, but it doesn't matter because this applies regardless of the time of year. Now, the way I see it, when you plan something to look forward to, there are three benefits. First, you've obviously got the future enjoyment of doing the thing that you're looking forward to.

Then you've got the looking forward to it and the anticipation that can be just as good as the thing and can be the exact fuel you need to keep going on the hard days. And let's face it, it's just really nice having something really joyful coming up in the calendar. And then the third thing you've got is it's actually quite fun finding the thing. Often we get so bogged down in day to day life that we forget to see what's going on in our community in the wider world. And often we can give ourselves a hard time for going down those rabbit holes because we tend to do it when we're procrastinating. We forget that that can actually be an activity in and of itself. So my challenge is for you to find one thing for each of the next three months and just get curious and see what you want to do. You might find that there's some fabulous makers market coming up.

You might find that a TV show is coming back and you're really excited about the next season. Or what might spring to mind is not necessarily an exact event, but you realize there's a friend you haven't caught up with in a while and it would be really good to get a date in the diary. Remember, it doesn't have to be huge. Ideally, it doesn't even have to cost money. And it can be fun simply for fun's sake. And if you are coming across resistance with this, here's a helpful reminder. The way I see it is we spend so much of our time future tripping already. We spend a lot of time thinking about what could go wrong, about worrying about the future.

So if we're already semi living in the future, then why not spend some time putting some things in the future that you actually want to do? I hope in your search for three things, you come across some things that really excite you, that are maybe quite unexpected and really give you something to look forward to. In a world where it often feels like hope is a hard thing to come by intentionally finding hope is a radical act. Enjoy the rabbit holes, dive into the unexpected, and have a good time finding your three things. I'll see you tomorrow.

1360: Just get the f*cker done!

Don’t do it to be productive, don’t do it for anybody else, do it for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning daily peppers and a very happy Monday to you. So I wanted to kick off this week with some slightly unconventional reasoning around just getting the shit done that needs to be done that you might not want to do. When I'm faced with a task I'm avoiding, my go to thoughts are usually around why it's important and that usually means my dream shooter comes up. There's often some shame around the fact that I haven't done it already. Then I go down that rabbit hole of trying to figure out why and it tends to always come back to shoulds and a sense of obligation. Now, when we are already resisting task that is not particularly helpful. So I want to reframe this a bit today and how I want to reframe it is by tweaking that sense of obligation. Now we all tend to be values driven.

We all tend to do the things we do for important reasons and that usually involves other people. But I just want to tell you it is perfectly fine to get things done because you just want to get that fun fucker off your plate. And that can also be great motivation. You don't always have to be motivated by really good intentions. You can simply be motivated by how much future you is going to be grateful that you did the thing, getting some brain space back or just not having to look at that anymore. It is okay to not want to do the thing, whatever that thing is. And the question I'm posing is how can we get it done for your own benefit? And just to be really clear, not just for your own benefit so you can get more shit done. There's a lot of stuff out there about working smarter, but how about living smarter so we have more time and space for ourselves? So whatever the fucker is that you've been putting off, see if you can get it done today for your own benefit.

Remember, it is okay to half ass it. It does not have to be perfect. And that is an unattainable goal to begin with. And also remember, shortcuts are strategic, not cheating. Have a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.

1359: Save some energy for you

Today we’re challenging the pressure to finish strong and advocating for a rebellious, compassionate approach to preserving some of that precious Friday energy.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. As we start to wrap up this week, I encourage you to do whatever you can do today to save some energy for yourself. Why? Or not completely arbitrary. Sometimes we put so much pressure on the end of the week, like we have to prove something to ourselves. We put our self worth on the line. We compare what we actually got done with what we hoped we would get done. We find ourselves wanting and while we may not have all the energy left to do the tasks on a Friday, we spend a fair amount of our precious energy beating ourselves up. The thing is, we are often time optimists and generally as humans, we're pretty bad at estimating how long something is going to actually take.

So we often don't even consider the fact that we've done a good amount this week because we're comparing it to this idealised version of what we thought could happen that might not have ever existed. What I'm saying essentially comes down to this. How can you save some of that precious mental and I know this is going to be a bit cheesy, but I'm just going to go there anyway. But also some of your soul energy for you this weekend. What can you decide to just not do? What can you not even half ass but quarter ass? And can you draw a line under this week acknowledge what you have done and just test out saying a rebellious fuck it and save some energy for you? You are allowed to end the week while you leave something on the table for yourself. And if that sounds completely counterintuitive, then I invite you to lean into it even more and test it out. So here's to leaving some of you for you. Here's to using that for yourself this weekend.

And here's to knowing you probably got way more done than you give yourself credit for. I'll see you back here bright and early on Monday morning in your lovely ears. Or in your inboxes on Sunday if you're part of my email community. I look forward to seeing you then, take care.

1357: What if it actually goes okay?

This one is for my fellow catastrophisers and would-be excellent health and safety officers!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. Now, I think a lot of us are feeling pretty tired lately, and I have this saying that goes tired equals bullshit thoughts. So today I thought I would interrupt some of those bullshit thoughts, especially around predicting the future. Now, I am really good at catastrophizing. Give me any situation and I can tell you how it would go catastrophically wrong within, say, three steps. I think I would truly flourish in a role where risk assessment and health and safety was involved. My ability to create the downfall of humanity based on something really quite banal verges on incredibly impressive. And the thing is, when we're tired and when we have more bullshit thoughts, sometimes we're even more able to see the risks.

But here's something that I've learned that I think you've learned too. And it's that life is very rarely predictable. And I mean that in a really good way. There are so many times where I have stayed up the night before, panicking about all the ways it can go wrong and creating such a vivid image in my head to find that actually it wasn't that big of a deal. Or actually it went okay. I know there's that brilliant quote about what if you fall, but what if you fly? And that can be really helpful, but sometimes that doesn't feel accessible to us. And actually the best possible outcome is that actually goes okay. Not everything has to be absolutely spectacular or life changing.

Sometimes it is more than enough for something that we were worried about simply to work out. All right. And that's where I invite you to land today. Now, if you've been around a while, you'll know that I am absolutely, completely against toxic positivity. And I want to acknowledge that sometimes things do go to shit. But actually, if we look back at our lives and all the things we've worried about, that vivid image in our head rarely came true. And in fact, we've probably got more memories of, oh, I can't believe I spent so much time worrying about that and it went okay as opposed to when it didn't. So I invite you to think about today.

What if it actually goes alright? What if that vivid disastrous version in your head has been cooked up by your dreamshitter as a way to stop you from doing the scary thing? And what if, and this is a scary one and hard to contemplate, what if the worst case scenario did happen and you survived? You are much more capable than you think you are. And sometimes I think the image of ourselves we have in our head versus our reality. There's a bit of a mismatch. Because we are resilient, we just tend to forget it. So a lot of food for thought there. Keep noodling on it and I'll see you tomorrow.
