825: Lightening the load (and choosing a new book)
If you need a permission slip to finally let go of that one to-do list item that you've been carrying on for eons, or to finally give up on the book you've been trudging through, today's episode is it!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It is the start of a new week and we are kicking off this week on the Daily Pep with a massive permission slip. So on a Monday, we tend to think about all the things that we have to do or the things that we didn't get done last week. And inevitably, on many of our to do lists that we've been carrying over since time began. Or at least that's what it feels like. And today I am giving you a massive fuck off side permission slip to let some of that shit go. Now, of course, there are some things that it really isn't logical or practical or sensible to let go of, but there will be things that are. And let's face it, if it has been this long since you haven't done it, then does it really matter that much? And I really want to extend this to our reading as well.
I think so many of us have so many piles of books that we want to read and maybe we are really struggling through one book that's been on our nightstand for at least a couple of months. Well, I think it is time to let that shit go too. Sometimes all it takes is one slow book or a book that we've been trudging through for quite a long time to really deprive us of the joy of reading. And I really believe that life is too short to make ourselves read books that we're not particularly enjoying. So whether it is your to do list or whether it is the book that you're trying to get through, why not give yourself a bit of a fresh start? Remember that forgetting things on your to do list or simply not doing them does not make you a bad person and that realistically. You probably have too much on there that one person could do in the first place anyway. And we also know that as each week goes by, the to do list only gets longer and longer. And to bring up that Karen Martin quote that you might just roll your eyes at, if everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
So here's the lightning you'll load this week. No matter how small the things are you take off the to do list. Or if it's just about picking a new bloody book, let's face it, we're all trying our best. We all drop the ball sometimes, and very, very rarely are the consequences really serious. So take this on board today, especially if you're feeling really resistant to it. Have a good one and I can't wait to see you back here bright and early, as always, tomorrow morning. See you then.

821: Change one little thing
When it comes to creating a life we love, or moving towards the person we want to be, it can be tempting to throw everything at the wall. This episode's a rallying cry for focusing on the little things one at a time, no matter how frustrating that can be!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, around here, we tend to be big fans of personal developments and in the least cheesy and non BS way possible. We really do want to make the most out of our one wild and precious life. And I reckon on any given day, if you asked any one of us the things that we want to improve or we want to work on, we would have a seriously long list. My own list includes my morning routine, my evening routine, my health, working more in alignment with my energy levels and generally building a bit more of a flexible structure into my life. Now, on the one side, I think quite a lot of us really happily like, nerding out about it and reading about it and it all feels pretty exciting. However, it can also be seriously overwhelming, especially when we have a whole list of things we want to work on.
It can be tempting to work on, order them at once, balls to the wall, but it tends to be too much, too soon, completely unsustainable and unrealistic and we end up falling flat on our face. So if you can relate and there are a whole bunch of things you want to work on, I just wanted to share what I'm doing at the moment and invite you to join me doing it in your way. So for me, I know that generally how the next day goes depends a lot on the evening before, but I also know that if I start working on an evening routine that has way too many components to it, and I know by evening number three if that I'll be going back to my old ways. So instead I'm trying to figure out what it is exactly that would make the biggest difference. And for me, it would be tackling my Revenge Bedtime Procrastination, where I end up scrolling on my phone to pretty obscene hours in the morning. And while I love it at the time, next day Meg is not a fan. So instead of really diving into everything at once, I know that I will build a nourishing and sustainable bedtime routine over time. But for now, I'm working on finding the easiest way to remove my phone from the bedroom.
And I think that thing is going to be a bit like a domino and other things like my sleeping hours are naturally going to change as part of it. So I share all of this as a reminder that the changes that we want to make, they might seem simple on the surface, but they are actually quite hard and I really don't think it works when we tackle things all at once. There are some rare moments when that does really work, but I think for the majority of us, while we may not be a fan of patience or doing it slowly, I think this is one of the best ways of really achieving long lasting change. So, as you're listening, I invite you to draw up that list in your head of all the things you want to change and choose one tiny thing instead. Now, you can choose it based on what's going to make the biggest difference to you. You can choose it based on which one you think you have the highest success rate at. Or if you're not sure, I invite you to think of my favorite way of doing it, which is to think about what the easiest one would be to do. So here's to making the tiny changes.
Here's to knowing that you are making progress. And here's to knowing that a little bit of patience in the areas of self improvement can make a shitload of difference. I'll see you back here bright and early tomorrow. And remember, you can do it. You really can.

820: A Monday quest!
We're kicking off the week with an important reminder that our self-worth is never connected to our productivity, as well as a Monday choose your own adventure quest.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you. So I thought we would kick off this week with a win. Now, I don't know about you, but I have a whole bunch of things that I want to do and and need to do that I remember intermittently and completely forget about. They're things that aren't necessarily going to ever feature on an important or an urgent to do list, but they're little things that will make life a little bit easier or just things we keep meaning to get around to. Now, one of mine is trying to make my phone a bit more minimal. Like many of us, I have a pretty complicated relationship with my phone. I wish I wasn't on it as much. I can definitely get lost down the vintage rabbit hole and me and Revenge Bedtime Procrastination have become pretty good friends.
So one of the ideas I've had is to just go through my phone and make it slightly more minimalist or maybe slightly less maximalist. I have tried all the screen limit things and I just turn them off or I snooze them. I've tried the screen limit timer thing and I just ignore it. I've tried uninstalling apps and I just download them again. I've tried quite a few things and none of them have worked. But one of the things I'm curious about that I have a feeling is really going to help is literally going through my phone, getting rid of apps I haven't used for ages, changing the background, changing the whole setup, and really just kind of resetting what I'm used to and some immediate habits. So that is one of the things that's been buzzing around in my head. It's never made it to a to do list.
Every time I think about doing it, I think, oh, that's a good idea and I get distracted or something else happens. But as I was sitting down thinking of ideas for today's episode, I remembered this was something I wanted to do. So literally just took ten minutes to go through all of my apps and just start deleting them and at least begin the process. And it felt good to start. It was pretty satisfying and it feels like a win for a Monday. So I've got a bit of a Choose Your Adventure quest for you today. If, like me, you've got a bit of a complicated relationship with your phone, I invite you to do something today that starts to change things a tiny bit. We are looking for small wins here and if you know you are someone who will really listen to the screen limits and you've never tried it out, maybe that can be your win for the day.
And the other option for our Choose Your Adventure quest is to simply do ten minutes of something that has been buzzing around your head that it would just feel really good to make a start on. Choose Something that isn't urgent, that's not going to send you down a massive rabbit hole, but is going to give you that bit of a dopamine kick. And it's just going to feel really good to even partially have that out of your brain. The smaller the better. But let's start this week off with a win and also a friendly reminder that your self worth is never, ever tied to what you do or don't get done. And lastly, if you are listening to this, and you have been getting lots of shit done lately and you're just tired, my quest for you is to have a little bit of a break if you're able to. So that's it for this Monday's Daily pep, I can't wait to see you back bright and early, as always, tomorrow morning. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. See you tomorrow.
