1339: When in doubt, try this…

To wrap up the week I’m sharing a low-pressure way to get clearer on making that decision!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So this week in the Daily Pep, we've been diving into all things decision making, and I've got a fun one to end the week. So I think that there's a whole bunch of little, silly, and playful things we can do that can really help us understand what we want. So if you've got a decision to make right now, however small it is or however big it is, I want you to try this. Let's say there are two main options to choose from. I want you to write each option on an identical piece of paper, fold it up, close your eyes, ask yourself the question on what you're deciding, and pick one. Now before you think I've lost it, that is step one. Step two then is the most important one, and it is to really pay attention to your first reaction when you read what option you've picked.

Because what's gonna happen in a lot of scenarios is either you're gonna feel relieved or you're gonna feel disappointed. And I think this is just a really, really handy trick to just get that bit of data. That's not to say this is the final way to make your decision, but it's a really good way of finding out what you really want if your gut and your intuition feel absolutely silent and you're really, really stuck. If you realize you would have been happy regardless of which one you picked, that is also really good information to know. And maybe for that one, it's about remembering, like we were talking about on Monday's episode, that there is no one right perfect choice. And then you can throw in another whole way of making decisions in there. Like, what would you in five years' time be grateful that you've chosen? If you were choosing based on integrity, what choice would you make? Or if joy was your lens, what choice would you make? Now on the other hand, if you realize that neither of those choices sound particularly good, then it is time to get creative. That's when you wanna start that list of 20 things you could do or 20 choices you could make.

And I choose 20 because it's after ten that the ideas start and pretty wild and a bit bizarre. And, also, sometimes the magic really happens. So if you're feeling stuck on something, whether it is as small as what to have for tea or as big as should you leave your job, Try this on for size. It's really simple. It's quite fun. If you've got no paper nearby, use a coin and really tune into that first reaction. Not the reaction you think you should have, but whether your heart sinks, whether it soars, or whether it does neither. I hope you've enjoyed this week's deep dive on all things decision making.

I would love to know whether this format resonates with you. If there's any topics you'd like me to do a themed week on, send me an email over to meg@therebelrousers.com. Or I know you can do this if you listen on Spotify. Leave a comment. I hope you have a weekend as fabulous as you are. And if that is not an option, be as gentle with yourself as you can be. And I look forward to seeing you in your inbox on Sunday or in your ears on Monday. Take care.

1337: Pros, cons and gut feelings

Today we’re exploring why your intuition deserves a spot at the decision making table.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So this week on the daily pet, we are really doing a bit of a deep dive into decision making. And so far, we've spoken about how there is really no one right path or no one right decision. Why listen to yourself and being discerning about other people's opinions is really helpful, and how you get to make decisions for yourself even if nobody else gets them. And today, we're looking at the feeling part of it. I know for many of us, like I was saying yesterday, we wanna make smart decisions. And we tend to get stuck in the analysis stage and we want all the information. But I think there's a huge piece of information that so many of us overlook because maybe we don't think it's that rational.

And that's how we feel about something. I remember when I was deliberating, leaving a job that was absolutely sucking the soul out of me and was so bad for my mental health. And I remember having a pros and cons list. One of the pros for leaving was to save my mental health, and it is in that moment looking at it that I realised that not all pros and cons are weighted equally. And also not all decisions can be made by balancing the pros and cons and trying to figure out the sensible answer. In that situation, I simply had to leave even though it was fucking scary. It wasn't comfortable, and I spent so long deliberating. But I knew deep down and I'd known for a while that I had to leave.

Something was feeling off in my body. And as somebody who very much lives in my head and has had a tendency to completely ignore all the warning signs in my body, I just wrote it off as not that important or a reckless way to make decisions. But I don't think that could be further from the truth. I'm not so far on the other side of the scale that I believe in the whole leap and the net will appear because I think for some of us, that would be reckless. And I know for me that if I don't have some kind of plan or a strategy or some idea of what's gonna happen next, that just causes me even more stress. So I'm not saying let go of all of the rational thinking completely. I'm just saying let's see what would happen if we shifted the weight distribution even a little bit. Because a lot of the times when we really think we don't know and we're going back and forth or we're asking everybody and their pet cat what they would do, the chances are you do have some idea what you want.

And maybe it is just as simple as getting quiet and asking yourself or getting your journal out or maybe it's just seeing what's happening in your body. There's that fabulous saying that the body whispers before it screams And I know I have been so good in my life at ignoring the whisperings, but I do think we can grow that muscle where we're able to hear them sooner. But that starts with trying to intentionally tune in in the first place. So whether you've got a big decision to make right now, a little decision, or you are currently decisionless, just keep this in mind. Listening to yourself is not reckless. We all have a sense of intuition even if we can't quite put our finger on what it is or how to feel it. So be open to how it shows up for you. Here's to loving and working with that fabulous juicy brain of yours, but also remembering there are other things to factor in as well.

A pros and cons list can only take you so far, and it might sound really fucking cheesy, but I'm gonna say it. But your heart can probably take you much further. Here's to choosing yourself and I'll see you tomorrow.

1336: Trusting your gut

On today's episode, we're reminding ourselves that our decisions don’t need to make sense to anyone else but us.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So this week on the daily pet, we are exploring decision making. And we started off yesterday by exploring how there is never one perfect path you can take. And while that can seem overwhelming, it can also be pretty liberating. So for today's episode, I wanted to come at it from a slightly different angle and just remind you that just because your decisions or you're thinking about something in a different way to other people, maybe your loved ones, doesn't mean it's wrong. For a lot of us around here, like we were saying yesterday, we can spend quite a bit of time deliberating and analysing decisions. And one of the things a lot of us tend to do is ask other people what they think we should do or what they would do in our situation. And we don't do it from the perspective that we're gonna take it outright, But we use it as more data points, and we use it to kind of add to the pros and cons list and give ourselves different angles.

But many a time, what can end up happening, especially if it's somebody we respect or somebody we feel a lot of expectations from, whether that's kind of experienced internally or externally or somebody we feel like we've got obligations to, we end up either taking it to heart or really considering it when it might completely fly in the face of what we're trying to do or what we wanted in the first place. And in the process of trying to make a really smart decision, we can end up completely overwhelmed. We can end up just completely lost at what to do when the chances are we probably started off with some idea of what we wanted. But here's the thing, when we turn to other people, there is so much more going on than just them giving an honest account of what they think we should or could do. Even if they truly have our best intentions at heart, there's gonna be a lot weighing in on their perspective. And that can come from their experiences, their personal values, their fears, whether they're risk adverse or they really value stability or security. They can project a lot of their own stuff onto you. And they might have a preference because one of the options works out better for them.

Now people in our lives who may be outright dream shitters or narcissists, we can completely discount what they think. But it can be really hard not to get really sucked into what somebody else thinks you should do. And here's what I always come back to. One, you are the person who's making the decision and you are living with the consequences. You are the person that wakes up and lives your life every single day and goes through the minutiae of all of it. And number two, there is this great quote which goes along the lines of, don't ask somebody for directions to places they've never been. And that one has been really helpful for me because depending on the situation, some people may just not be qualified to really help you make an informed decision. And I don't mean to sound like a dick when I say that.

Chances are if they're a loved one, they really do wanna help even if they don't know that much about the thing. And yet we can put so much weight on that when it might not be as helpful as it could be. All of this is to say that you get to make your own decisions, and your decisions are still valid if they do not make sense to anybody else. And it's also okay if you're making a decision that other people around you wouldn't. We're all different, a bit like I was saying a minute ago. Everybody brings their own perspectives, experiences, and values to the equation, including you. So here's to listen to yourself even if it flies in the face of what other people think you should do. Here's to going back to what you really, really do want to do.

And here's to taking other people's opinions and perspectives with the biggest grain of salt and also pausing to stop and ask if you do actually want their opinion in the first place. Have a good Tuesday, and remember, everything changes when you believe you matter.

1335: Permission to not have it all figured out

If the pressure to have everything figured out is overwhelming, then today’s episode is a permission slip for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So to kick off this week, I thought we could start with something that might just help take the pressure off a little bit. And it is this idea that it's actually okay not to know all the answers. I think most of us go around life thinking that other people have got all their shit figured out and we haven't, and that is not the case. And here's the thing. We're all new to this human thing. As much as a lot of the self help and personal development stuff out there would have you believe, there is no one right way to do this. There is no one path.

And for a lot of us, we are making things up as we go, and that's kind of the point. And if we're all making it up anyway, that's where it gets exciting because you get to create your life. But I think one of the most freeing things, which can be hard, difficult, uncomfortable, and sometimes just shitty to accept, is that sometimes there is no right answer. And what you can do is your best guess. And I know from personal experience that sometimes you can end up deliberating and figure something out for so long that, a, it becomes even more confusing, b, it sucks up so much of our precious time and energy, and, c, sometimes we just have to learn by the doing and get the experience and data points along the way. So picking something and trying it out tentatively can be a lot more helpful than trying to wait for the perfect next step because and I think we all know this. There is no perfect next step. And if there is, well, it fluctuates from minute to minute.

We all go through different seasons of needing different things, and that's just part and parcel of being human. You're not doing anything wrong. Don't get me wrong. I know how uncomfortable it can be being in the uncomfortableness of not knowing what to do. I know that all too well, and I think a lot of us do. But I also know how overwhelming it can be and also impossible it is to try and figure out the next right thing when there isn't one. So take this episode as a permission slip. I hope it gives you some freedom.

Remember, there are very, very few situations in life where we're unable to go back and try a different path, so just try something. I know looking back that I often regret the amount of time I spent absolutely agonising over a decision much more than I do the decision I ended up making. Because even with the most detailed plan, it can still turn out completely wild and unexpected. Things very rarely go to plan anyway. So and I say this to myself as much as I do to you. Let's try and spend less time in the really pretty, colourful, lovely planning space, and let's spend more time in the living space. I hope you're having a fabulous start to the week, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1334: The gift of unexpected joy

If you’re quick to lift up friends but slow to treat yourself with the same care, this episode is your reminder to soak up a little of your own wonderful energy this weekend!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. It is the end of the week, and I wanna end the week with a question, which is a really nice one to think about. And it is this. If you were gonna do something lovely for your friend right now, what would you do? So we're not necessarily thinking huge grand gestures. It doesn't have to involve a huge amount of money or any money in general. But if you were gonna do something to remind them that they matter to you and they're important to you and to just bring a bit of unexpected joy to their life today, what would you do? And the reason I'm asking this is twofold. First, I don't know about you, but I think we could all do with a bit of kindness and faith restored in humanity. So if you're able to do it, do that or the minimum viable version of that for a dear friend or loved one this weekend.

But not before you've done the second one, which I'm sure many of you saw coming, which is if we replace your friend with yourself, what would it look like to give that gift to yourself? And would you need to change what you did? Kindness is such a value to so many of us around here, And we give that out in bucketfuls to our friends and loved ones. But many a time, it is the people that give that love and support so freely to other people that struggle the most to give it to themselves. And I share that not in terms of a problem that needs to be fixed but something just to keep in the back of our minds or maybe this weekend at the front of our minds. So here's to gift giving. Here's to restoring our own faith in humanity, and here's to knowing that many times the biggest gift we can give to other people and also to ourselves is the gift of being witnessed and the gift of being seen, heard, and valued. I hope you do something deliciously wonderful for yourself this weekend. And here's to using your fabulous kind heart for yourself as well. I'll see you on Monday.

1332: Flavours of hard

If you’ve ever felt broken for struggling with things that seem easy for others, this pep talk is your reminder that you’re wonderfully human—just as you are!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and it's very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day, and I'm here with a huge dollop of compassion and to remind you that you're doing alright because you really are. Now this week on the Daily Pep, we've really gone deep in terms of identifying your needs, giving yourself permission to take up space, and leaning into your dreams even if they feel impossible or even if it feels really uncomfortable to admit. And today, I wanna add a shit ton of compassion to the mix by reminding you that we all have our different flavors of hard, and that doesn't make you some kind of faulty human being. It simply makes you a human being. And if we can take off even just 10% of the judgment that we can give ourselves, we might just live a life that is a whole lot kinder to ourselves. So I wanna give you a concrete example when I'm talking about flavours of hard. So something that I find nigh on impossible and have to take really intentional, considered action to do is brushing my teeth.

I have also, in the past, really struggled with taking daily medication. Now for some reason, I just find it really, really hard. I find it hard to remember. I've got some resistance towards it, and it just feels like a harder lift. But here's the thing. For a long time, it felt like an even harder and much heavier lift because not only did I struggle with doing the thing, but I also had so many of these internalised stories about how I shouldn't struggle with these things, how it's easy for everybody else, and there must just be something wrong with me. I've also always been intrigued with personal development and things like habit building. And my internal stories were not helped by all of these examples in so many of those popular books about how to chain habits together.

You know, everybody brushes their teeth every day. It's something you do without even thinking. So just add a habit onto that. And I would feel even worse. But here's the thing. Something changed when I realised that, actually, this is just hard for me. I do not need to get forensic about the reasons why. Sometimes that helps.

But the most helpful thing in this scenario was just to realise that this is something I find hard. And with a bit more of that acceptance and less judgment, I was able to figure out how I could make it easier for myself without wading through the shame, without also using it as evidence that I am indeed some kind of faulty human being and there is something wrong with me. Now we all have our different flavours of hard. And for many of us, we get so caught up in trying to work out why it is hard for us and beating ourselves up for it that we completely forget that there are other things that we do that are pretty easy and frictionless that actually are really hard to other people. Chances are we might not even know other people struggle with those things because we assume that everybody can do them, and that is often not the case. So if you are hard relating to this, I want you to know that every single person has their own different flavours of hard. There is nothing wrong with you. And maybe ask yourself this question.

If in some parallel universe you were able to remove that shame and simply accept that this thing is hard for you and that self judgment and self criticism wasn't so heavy, what would that change, and how could you get creative about it? That is my food for thought for you today. And I wanna wrap up on another important reminder, and that is don't compare your insides to somebody else's outsides. I'll see you tomorrow.

1331: The courage to prioritise yourself

If you’ve ever felt like your needs come last, then this episode is your reminder to claim your space and celebrate what truly matters to you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So today, I wanna continue down a rabbit hole of something I've been exploring lately, and that is this idea of following our needs, our wants, and our desires, and treating them like they're actually valid things. And today, I really wanna focus on our needs. I think so many of us grow up with the conditioning that we are only allowed to need the same things other people need, Or our needs come after everybody else's needs have been fulfilled, and they're a bit of a bonus. Now around here, we tend to be creative, multi passionate, highly sensitive, empaths. We might have to work really hard to maintain our mental health. We might have chronic illnesses, and we might be neurospicy. So whether you identify with one of them, all of them, somewhere in between, it makes total sense that in a lot of areas of life, we have different priorities and needs.

I really love that quote about if it costs you your mental health, it's too expensive, or it's not an option in the first place. And as I think about this, I'm just thinking about what ways do we make ourselves fit into a mould that is actually either too expensive or not a valid option? And what needs do we have that maybe we don't say out loud and maybe you feel like it's just a quirk you've got that you have to deal with? So I'm raising these things today to remind you that your needs are valid, to invite you to think about what is actually a nonnegotiable for you and really important. And those things don't have to make sense to anybody else but you. You know you best. And it does suck that it usually comes down to the burden of the individual to figure out all these solutions for ourselves while we're also going through shit. So give yourself credit and grace for all the ways that you've adapted already. And know that a lot of this work isn't a luxury, but very much a necessity. However you walk through this world, you deserve joy, you deserve ease, and you get to build a life that you love.

So keep being on your own team. Know that this takes a huge act of courage, usually on a daily basis, and ask for help where you can. You are a fabulous human being. The world is such a brighter place for you being in it. And if nobody has told you this lately, my dear, everything changes when you believe you matter and you fucking matter.

1330: Giving yourself permission to take up space

Today we’re fighting the urge to minimise our needs and dreams, and embracing the courage it takes to let ourselves want more.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you.

So to kick off this week on the Daily Pep, I wanted to give both you and me a reminder and a permission slip that I've got a feeling both of us might need. And it's this, You get to take up space. As humans, we all have wants, we have needs, we have desires. And so often, we dismiss those as frivolous, or we tell ourselves it would be selfish for us to seek out those things. It's so easy to dismiss those things as personal preferences that don't really matter, but they really, really do because it can be so hard to figure out what we want, say what we want, or set a necessary boundary. One of the things we tend to do is minimize those things and tell ourselves that they weren't very important in the first place. And I think you know as well as me that our dream shooter will back that up to the high heavens.

I get pretty sick of a lot of the advice out there about dream chasing that just simply tells you to go for it. With little to mainly no consideration to the fact that many of us live complicated and nuanced lives, we can't just kinda say fuck it and get up and go. And because it often is so much more complicated, what we can tend to do is play down the importance of our dreams in the first place or tell ourselves that it is somehow selfish or berate ourselves for not being grateful enough or for having dreams in the first place. So for today's daily pet, I simply want to remind you that it is okay to take up space and to have wants and dreams in the first place, even if they don't make sense to anybody else and even if you can't figure out how they're gonna happen. The how comes later, but firstly, we need to work on allowing ourselves to want things in the first place. I know for me, my dream shitter loves to get caught up in the practicality of things and the logistics, and I've often taught myself out of something about twenty seconds before I've realized I've even wanted it. But we get to stay in that space where we identify what we want even if we've got no fucking clue about how we'd go about it or it feels impossible. I think that identifying the wants and giving yourself permission to take up space and want them is a huge part of the process.

So today, I invite you to think about what random things have been coming up for you that feel like a want or a need. And ask yourself, if I gave myself permission to take up space or if I could put everybody else's ideas and wants of me to the side, what would that look like? And just live in the possibility for a bit. Know that this work takes courage. It can also bring up grief in terms of old dreams that maybe didn't work out or we didn't pursue. 1329: Find your weekly lesson!

Today we're diving into how we can take a scavenger hunt approach to building a life we love!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. It is the end of a week that you've never had before, so I thought today I'd ask both of us a question, which is, what did you learn about yourself this week? For many of us, we tend to do the big reflecting around the new year or the start of a new season or a new quarter. And we forget there's so much data, and there's so much we can learn from every new week and every new day. So what did you learn about yourself or about the ways you wanna live your life or the ways you don't wanna do things this week? It doesn't have to be some huge epiphany, though it might be. It may be something tiny, and it might be something that makes next week a little bit more joyful if you planned it with that in mind. There are so many things out there like personality quizzes, and don't get me wrong, I'm an absolute sucker for them, and I think they can be incredibly insightful. But I also think we can get a huge level of insight just from the little lessons we pick up along the way.

Your lesson could be something like, I need a bit more sleep to function properly. And going back to what we were saying earlier in the week, our brains love using our creativity to solve problems, and that is a great starting point. It could be that hanging out with a certain person really drains your energy. Again, that can be a great starting off point to explore. And if you're struggling to think of something, it might be helpful to think of, like, what you're getting sick of. So are you getting sick of always dreading a Monday morning? Are your lunches really boring? Are you feeling uninspired lately? All of these things provide great clues on how we can adapt just slightly and get that bit closer to building a life that we love that works for us. So get thinking about your lesson. Maybe email it to Monday to remember.

And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. And taking the time to learn the lessons and the things that work for you can be a great way of showing yourself that you matter. So have a good one. I can't wait to be back with you on Sunday in your inbox or Monday in your lovely ears for a new episode of the daily pep. And I'll see you then.

1327: In praise of wonky attempt and new recipes!

In today's episode, we're diving into why messy first tries are worth celebrating, and the power of having an imperfect starting points.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day. We are nearly halfway through the week. And because we all live with very loud dream shitters, I wanted to just quickly remind you that you are probably doing way better than what your dream shitter would give you credit for. I just wanted to remind you of that before we get going. So I know for a lot of us, we tend to get in a bit of a rut in terms of the meals that we cook. We have the same kind of four or five meals on rotation, and we've been getting a bit sick of them. So this week and last week, we've really started trying out new recipes.

And as we have, it's really got me thinking of how this relates to building a life we love. So we decided to choose a bunch of meals that were pretty easy to cook. We often get ourselves tangled in a right mess by choosing these elaborate things that neither of us have the energy at the end of the day to cook. And then we end up wondering what we're gonna do with the ingredients instead. So we picked three or four easy new recipes, and we've been testing them. And what really occurred to me is this. It's not really about how good that recipe is on the first go. The first attempt is figuring out what it tastes like.

It's figuring out whether it's doable, whether it's something we enjoy, and we can really adapt from there. Some of the meals that we enjoy the most are completely bastardized from different recipes and ways that we've adapted things, and they resemble nothing close to what the original recipe was. But without that original recipe, it probably wouldn't have existed. And here's how I think that relates to us. When we first have a go at something, we generally tend to expect the results to be pretty impressive, or we think we're not gonna bother again. We judge our early attempts, and it's really easy just to move on to the next thing rather than actually wondering if there was something there that you could build upon. But what if the point of that kind of starting recipe or that starting experiment is just to build yourself a really vague base or just to break the blank page. Sometimes it does go swimmingly.

Sometimes we try something and think, Fuck yeah, that is it. But a lot of the time, it doesn't tend to be quite right. And that's the whole point. You get to tailor things for you and the way they work for you and your tastes. As long as you're not doing anybody else harm, it doesn't really matter what other people think. It has to work for you and your brain. I think there is a lot of freedom that can be found in seeing the starting point as an experiment rather than trying to figure out what the end result is gonna be. There's so much to be learned from trying something to see if you even like it in the first place and to see if there is enough there to continue with.

There's also a lot of compassion to be found with trying something and realizing it's not for you. And that's not a personal failure. It's just not to your taste, and that's okay. And I think that is one of the joys of living a fabulously curious multi passionate life. There are so many things to dive into. To go back to the recipe analogy, there are so many different recipes to choose from and yet absolutely that can be a cause of overwhelm. But it also shows you the possibilities and that it's okay if one thing isn't for you. So I hope you find something in here that inspires you today.

On our search to kind of refresh the meals that we make, we have uncovered some meals that we used to make that we completely forgot about. So I'm also paying tribute and just reminding you of those as well. So it's Wednesday. You've nearly done it. You are doing so much better than you think you are. And here's to finding some fresh and some old sparks of inspiration and knowing that starting is great testing ground. I'll see you tomorrow.

1326: Maybe it's time to pick up your shovel

If you’re sick of trying to bloom where you're planted, today's episode is all about giving yourself permission to shake things up and find a place where you can really thrive!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So we started this week on the Daily Pep, taking inspiration from a sticker I've got on my laptop that says, bloom where you are planted. And we talked about how that can be a great reframe, and how it can be a way of really taking back power, and a way to access joy if you wish circumstances were different. And today, I wanna give you a different kind of permission slip, and it is that you don't have to bloom where you're planted. It is okay to get a massive shovel and plant yourself somewhere else. It doesn't have to be in a drastically different place. It could be in a completely different garden, or it could be a couple of degrees to the right where you get sunlight. It is not selfish to remove yourself from a situation where you do not and cannot thrive. And that fabulous Emily McDowell quote comes to mind.

The idea of, is it a personal failure or is it an impossible setup? And I think that is such a helpful one to go back to. You are allowed to have your fuck it moments. And I know around here we tend to be planners, so I just wanna remind you that your fuck it moments include coming up with a strategic plan and figuring out how you're gonna say fuck it rather than limiting it to that Hollywood kind of fuck everything, storm out moment. We're all different. We all have different circumstances and conditions that we need in order to bloom and to thrive. And maybe for you, you are in an impossible setup, and it is not a personal failure. Because where you are simply doesn't allow you to thrive or bloom. This can translate from anything from a job you're in, a friendship that you have, or a creative project that you're starting.

We have this great narrative in this society that we live in that quitting or leaving things is a sign of weakness, but I actually think it can be a huge sign of strength. A lot of us let the phrase life is too short roll off our tongues, and we forget just how many experiments we can do. There are so many different ways that we can build a life we love. And often choosing yourself is the most courageous thing you can do, even if it doesn't feel a lot like courage at the time. So if you are sick of trying to bloom where you are planted, see how you can change things up. It doesn't need to be drastic. Some of the best things we do are the smallest changes. And if this feels all a bit too intimidating, just use it as a bit of a thought experiment.

If you had a shovel and you could dig it where you are and plant yourself somewhere else, where are the places you could go? Use it as a tool for inspiration, for some clarity, and just see what comes up. You deserve a life where you thrive, where you bloom, and where you can meet the conditions that you need, even if they don't make sense to other people. So here's to exploring what blooming means to you, here's to exploring where you want to be planted, and here's to choosing yourself. I'll see you tomorrow.

1325: Blooming in unlikely places

Today we’re exploring how to find pockets of joy and opportunities right where you are—even if it’s not where you hoped to be!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to to you. So, I've recently gotten to putting stickers on my laptop. And today's episode is inspired by the sticker I see all the time by my trackpad. And I figured that it serves as a great reminder and an invitation as we start the week. So today's daily pet directly from the sticker on my laptop is bloom where you are planted. Now I don't take this as a toxic productivity s kind of. No matter what shit you're going through, it can be great.

I definitely don't see it like that. But there is something to be said for looking around you even if you're not in your ideal environment or even if things could be a lot better and seeing what opportunity this season presents you with. I also think it's a great way of taking back control because when everything feels shit on toast, we can imagine that any future happiness, joy, contentment, fulfilment is gonna come from a different place at a different time. Now due to circumstances, you might not be able to access the levels at where you want them to be. And maybe the way you achieve those things is completely different. But maybe they are possible in small, different ways. I think it can also serve as a good reminder to try and stay in the present more. I know that I am great at future tripping and thinking about the next thing and the next thing, and I forget that there actually might be some cool things about where I am right now.

Rather than exclusively time traveling, it serves as a great reminder for me to look around me, not just get stuck stuck and focused on where I want to go, and use where I am to my advantage. We all have fabulous, juicy, creative brains that love solving problems. And I think the question of how can you bloom where you're planted can be a great creative problem for your brain to solve, and you might come up with some unexpected answers. So here's to seeing how you can bloom. And if this doesn't resonate with you, tomorrow's episode is gonna be just for you. I hope you have a fabulous start to the week, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1324: It doesn't always have to be new-new!

If you're looking for a spark of inspiration and you want to tend to your curiosity (or even your inner child), today's episode is for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. So I don't know about you, but I definitely own more books that I haven't read than I have read. And as multi passionate, so we tend to have interest in so many different things. We are innately curious, and we also tend to get distracted by any shiny object. So for today's daily pep, I'm simply giving you a moment to remember different things. Maybe it's areas that you were really interested in. Maybe it's a a craft kit you bought or a book you borrowed that you were really excited by and just completely forgot about. Or what is something you've been wanting to do and just haven't had the time to do? And like we were talking about earlier in the week, how can you break away from all or nothing thinking? And what is something that you couldn't wait to dive into that you just didn't, that maybe you feel bad about, or maybe life got in the way and you forgot it was even a thing.

Maybe also think about the things you've got access to, like courses or subscriptions that you haven't used. And just think about what could feed your curiosity and your joy right now that isn't something new and shiny and doesn't involve getting something new. Now don't get me wrong. I am all for the new and the shiny, and novelty inspires and motivates me more than most things. But I also forget that things that I've had for a while that I haven't gone into, they're gonna be new and fresh too. I know that previous me had good taste, and maybe I'll be picking it up exactly when I most need to. So this is your invitation to think back and remember and dig around something that you were really excited about that you didn't get around to, and let it provide inspiration and also some nourishment for you. Adulting can be really fucking hard, and we do not give ourselves enough treats.

So take this as a reminder, a permission slip, and an invitation to feed your curiosity and maybe even your inner child. As we're wrapping up the week together, I wanna remind you that your worth is not based on your productivity. What you did or didn't get done this week is enough. And if you need that in a bit of a spicier format, give yourself a bit of a fucking break and appreciate what you have done. I look forward to being back here with you on Monday as usual and on Sunday in your inbox if you're signed up for my email community. If you wanna get in on that fun, there's more info in the show notes and I can't wait to be back with you soon. Take care.

1322: A counter-intuitive approach to problem solving

If you feel like you're just too close to the problem, or you're sick of thinking about it and not finding helpful solutions, I've got a slightly random idea for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So I've got an unconventional one for you today. If you are noodling around on a problem, you're trying to solve something, you're looking for inspiration, or you're trying to come up with a new idea. Now, when we do this, we tend to look in likely places. Say, for example, you've got a business. You might turn to the business books that you've bought in the past. And for a lot of the time, they might be really helpful. But what is also really helpful is using your own creativity and letting your brain wander and finding ideas and solutions in the most unlikely of places.

One of the brilliant things about our brains is its ability to make connections with completely opposing things or completely random shit. And that can really be when the magic happens. But so often, our logical brain takes over. We try to get really strategic and pragmatic. And we look in this, quote, sensible places. And sometimes what ends up happening is we're too close to it that we just end up staring at something. It gets frustrating, and we're no further ahead. So whether you're noodling on a particular problem, or if you're too close to it to see it clearly, or if you just fancy a different perspective, try intentionally looking in the most random of places.

I'm thinking for myself right now, I'm trying to tackle something in my business. And I'm just looking at my bookshelf, and I'm thinking that I am so close to the problem. I will probably find a solution or something really helpful on my book of the history of Eurovision than I would some of the business books I've got even though it feels pretty counterintuitive, quite unproductive, and, yes, very random. Here's where I'm coming at it from. If you're sick at looking at the same problem and not coming up with any new ways to solve it, just try something completely different. You might not find what you think you were looking for, but you could find something completely unexpected that's better than you could have imagined. So here's to finding inspiration in unlikely places. Here's to putting our brilliant creative brains to use. And here's to looking at what's right under our nose. I'll see you tomorrow.

1321: What are you inadvertently depriving yourself of?

Today we're making space for joy by diving into all or nothing thinking and challenging the stories we tell ourselves.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So something that trips up quite a few of us is falling into all or nothing thinking. And when we're people who have a lot of curiosities, a lot of passions, and a lot of things that we want to do, Sometimes we feel really constrained by our limited time and energy. And mixed with our all or nothing thinking, we tell ourselves that there's no point in starting something, or we tell ourselves that we'll get around to it someday, or the time just never comes. And today, I wanna challenge both me and you on that because I am definitely prone to all or nothing thinking. One of the stories that I tend to tell myself is that if I haven't got the time to finish a project, then I'm not going to start it in the first place. And that leads me to today's question, which is what are we inadvertently depriving ourselves of because we've created all these rules or these stories about the circumstance it needs to happen in. We all hear those quotes about starting small and a little bit of progress being a huge amount of progress over time.

And it is really easy to dismiss that because we hear it so often. But no matter how much we roll our eyes, it is kind of true. But often before we get to that tiny step, we need to address that story about it being worth starting anyway or worth continuing anyway, even if we don't have enough time or energy than we would like. I know for me as I sit here today recording this, I'm thinking about so many different projects I wanted to start that I talked myself out of because it wasn't the right timing or the setup wasn't ideal. And I can say hand on my heart, I wish I'd have fucking started them anyway. Not only because I'd have actually made significant progress and got somewhere with them, but also it would have brought me so much joy and brought some sparkle to my life as well. So for both of us today, my question is, in what way or in what ways are we depriving ourselves of joy because we're buying into all or nothing thinking or the circumstances aren't ideal? See what comes up for you. See what would look like an easy way to do that or start doing the thing. And you might just find you've got a bit more joy in your step. I hope you have a Tuesday as fabulous as you are, and you remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1320: Stealing breadcrumbs and creating a life you love

If you need a dash of hope or a dollop of inspiration this morning, I've got just the thing for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So nearly ten years ago, me and mister Meg did a huge road trip across The United States. Now we are huge foodies, and one of the best things we ate was really fresh tacos at a place in the Grand Central Market in LA. It's funny how you bring things into your own life from so many different experiences. And for us, it's the fact that whenever we're doing burritos or tacos, we now always serve it with raw onion, lime juice, and coriander or cilantro to our American friends. And I'm sharing this today because last night, we had burritos, and I also enjoyed the morning reading some Austin Kleon. And I've also been thinking a lot lately about how we create our lives. Now Austin Kleon is one of my favorite writers and illustrators, and I had him as a guest here on the daily pep for episode 520.

And he's got this great phrase, steal like an artist. And I think for so many of us, we get caught up so much on that title of artist that we miss out so much of the richness that that phrase has to give us. Because to me, creating a life you love is one of the most creative things we can do. And in many senses, we are all artists. Like that quote from MC Richards, all the arts we practice are apprenticeship. The big art is our life. So I'm sharing this today as a reminder as you go about your day to day and as you think about different experiences you've had, to really steal like an artist when it comes to building a life you love, it's not necessarily about the big things. It is about all the bread crumbs and the sprinklings and all the things that you weave into your life from many days well lived.

And that can also be a fun activity in and of itself, looking at your day to day life and piecing together why you do things the way you do, in what ways you've already stolen like an artist, and how many fond memories have shaped your life. So this is a bit of hope and a bit of inspiration for your Monday morning. I hope it sparked something. I hope you find some unexpected joy, And I hope you find something to steal. Have a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.

1317: Do something tiny for future you

Today we're diving into the importance of micro acts of kindness towards ourselves, and how they can bring a bit more ease into our lives!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day, and I'm popping in with a reminder to be kind to yourself on a micro level. So years ago, I found the quote on a calendar, and it is a question that asked, what would your future self be grateful for? And it is one of my favorite questions because we are so much better at being compassionate to our future selves than we are to our present selves. But one of the ways I think we can get caught up is thinking of it on a huge level and almost getting existential about it, thinking about it in terms of what regrets you might have and what big decisions you need to make to satisfy your future self. But I think we miss out on so much if we disregard the tiny things that we do. And this is what got me thinking about it. So I'm insulin dependent, and I have to inject myself with insulin quite a few times a day. And each time, I need to screw on a new needle.

And every time I go to inject myself and I've already pre changed the pen, it's just a nice surprise. It's one less thing I need to do in a process that isn't that fun anyway, and it just make things a bit quicker and a bit easier. Now that is a tiny, tiny example, and purposely so because it can make a huge difference. And when you have a couple of things that you have to do every day, you make a tiny bit easier for yourself the next time. You really do start noticing the difference. And it also becomes muscle memory, and it becomes something you do on autopilot. We all have so many things that we need to do every day and so many micro decisions. And I think one of the really tangible ways that we can practice kindness and compassion to ourselves, especially like to a lot of us around here that doesn't come naturally, is by doing these really super small things.

It's so easy to get lost in future tripping and think about our future selves way down the line. But it can be pretty powerful asking yourself, okay. What does this evening version of me need? What would I be really grateful for having done for myself tomorrow morning? And again, this is not about getting shit done and being super productive. It's not about optimizing every single part of your life. It's just doing little things that show that you give a shit about yourself, that future you will appreciate and make life a bit easier. And to strip it back to its bare bones, what can you do that future you will just have that moment of yay? Because we do not have that enough. Have a think about this as you go about your day. Start super small.

You can build it up to where you want it to be. It doesn't have to be exactly where you want it to be to start off with. Try and start so small that it feels like cheating and give it a go. I hope today provided you with some unexpected joy, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1316: An alternative way to start the day

Today is about meeting yourself where you're at, and starting your day being on your own team.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Last week, I had an absolute stinker of a cold, and I don't think anybody would have appreciated me recording a new episode. So it's lovely to be back. And I've just enjoyed a really chilled Easter weekend, and things are feeling good. And as I mentioned how I'm feeling, that is exactly what I wanna talk about today. Because something I've been thinking about lately is how much less friction and tension there would be in our lives if we could somehow accept or make peace with or tolerate how we feel rather than how we should feel.

Now don't get me wrong, and I wanna be really clear about this. This is not about being like, yay. I'm feeling shitty. What I'm trying to say is, what if every day rather than thinking about how you should feel, you just kinda woke up and thought, I'm tired today, and that's alright. Rather than, I'm tired today examining all the reasons why, all the reasons you shouldn't be tired, all the reasons you should be tired, trying to figure out how to make it a different way. I just can't help but feel that there might be a bit less resistance in our life. If we could get okay with how we're feeling on the day rather than the shoulds. Now I am a natural problem solver, and I find this really hard. I'm not trying to say this is easy. If I wake up and just feel a bit down, my immediate response rather than thinking, okay. I feel a bit down today. Let's meet myself where I'm at, is, okay. Why do I feel down? Should I feel down? How should I be feeling? And before I know it, I've gone off in a million different directions, all that require quite an enormous amount of energy from me, and that's before I've really done anything with my day. If on those days I did meet myself with more acceptance, I can't help but think that I'd be kinder to myself, and also I'd have a bit more energy too. And I think one of the ways we do this and make it regular is by practicing it.

So that is my challenge for you today. I want you to think as you listen to this how you're feeling and ask yourself what if you were okay with that. Or gently put your hand up to stop all of the different things that come up in terms of how you should be feeling and what you can do about it. And ultimately, it's about how can we be more compassionate to ourselves and slightly less analytical. Whether today you're feeling it or you're feeling shit, meet yourself where you are and maybe start with the question, what would today look like if I was actually kind to myself? And if that feels like too big of an ask, what would you say to a friend who felt like you feel right now? So that's my mini challenge for you today. I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1307: Changing familiar scripts

If you struggle with the idea of ease or taking shortcuts, today's episode is for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. Now, like many of us, I grew up with this belief system that in order for something to be worth it, you have to really struggle for it. And that anything good in life is really hard to achieve. Now today we're not necessarily throwing that completely out the window but we are inviting a bit more ease into our lives. Because part of the problem with that belief system is that we believe that unless we really struggled or went through pain to get something, then we're not worthy of the reward. And if something wasn't really, really hard, then it just doesn't count. And as I'm saying this out loud and probably as you're hearing this as well, we can both admit that that doesn't sound that healthy. Now, of course, there are things in life that are gonna be shit, and we will have to go through tough things, and we have been.

We all know that. But I think we could also have a much better time of it by inviting ease to the party as well, by taking shortcuts that are so easy it feels like cheating, by taking small incremental steps that just feel easy, and by giving ourselves evidence that we can make progress and we can do epic shit in a way that feels good and doesn't put us through hell and back. Now, of course, that doesn't apply to all life situations. Not everything can be made fun. Not everything can be made easy. But I think a lot of the day to day choices we make, well, they can benefit from a bit of joy and also some strategic shortcuts. So as you go about your day to day, I want you to try and take notice of things that you do every day and if there is an easier way to do them. Not everything deserves a % of your focus or a % of your effort.

You can absolutely half ass a lot of things that aren't that important, and you might be pleasantly surprised. Now to be clear, this is not about optimizing every minute of your life so you can be more productive, But it is trying to make things a little bit better for you so you can have more joy and you can get back some of that precious time and energy. It might be something as simple as choosing new clothes and putting them out the night before so it frees you up a bit of mental space in the morning. It could be putting your favorite CD in the car rather than just sticking with the one that's been in there for months or even just using the notes app on your phone a bit more so you don't have to keep everything in your head all the time and you can be a bit more present. I know these things sound simple and quite basic, but it's usually these things that we tend to overlook that can make quite a big difference. So have a think about what your own shortcuts and what your own joy injections look like. Happy hump day and I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow.

1304: Let’s find ourselves some joy!

We’re wrapping up this week on The Daily Pep! with a mini Friday challenge that I think we could all do with!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you.

It is the end of the week, and I am determined to make this more of a fry, yay, than a fry day. No matter how much I cringe at myself doing that. So today's episode is short and simple because I don't want us to overthink it. What is one thing you can do today just to have a bit of fun or to add some lightness or joy to your day? I don't know about you, but I tend to be quite cerebral, And I can really get stuck in my brain, and I can make everything really serious, and I can make things a lot bigger than they need to be. And I often need a reminder just to add some fun even though sometimes I can find it a bit tricky to think about what that thing could be in the first place. So if, like me, you could do some pointers, maybe it's about joyfully saying fuck off to something on your to do list that has been there for far too long and using that time to do something that maybe you would feel is too indulgent or you were put off doing, but that is something for you. Maybe it's about leaving for something five minutes earlier, so you can quite literally stop and smile the roses. Or you can take notice of things that maybe you don't usually have time for.

Maybe it's as simple as putting on your favorite song on repeat and just really enjoying it. Maybe it's about adding some color and doodling your to do list for the day and changing it up a bit. And maybe it is really leaning into that Friday feeling regardless of whether you think you've done enough this week and getting excited for the weekend. Remember, it doesn't have to be big. It can take five minutes or less, and it can still have a huge impact on your day. And it doesn't have to cost you money. So that's quite a fun container. Play with it.

I know you have a big creative brain. See what comes up for you. Try not to overthink it, and let's end this week with a bit of lightness. Have a lovely end to your week. I hope that you find some unexpected joy today and this weekend, And I can't wait to be back with you in your inbox on Sunday or in your ears on Monday. Either way, I'm looking forward to it, and I'll see you soon.
