    268: Find the unexpected treasure

Today we're diving into the importance of experimenting, and leaning into uncertainty.

    Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative, multipassionate, and frankly, fabulous women who are already making the world a brighter place just by being in it. Now we talk a lot on the daily prep about creativity, about getting started, about finishing projects. And today, I wanna dive into one of my very favorite topics, and that's this idea of experimenting. I think so many of us are avid planners. We love all the post it notes, and we love having a game plan and an action plan. We like to know where we're headed. We like to know what we have to do along the way, and we're not such a huge fan of the word uncertainty.

But today, I encourage you just to throw planning to the wind for a bit and just dive deep into experimenting because experimenting is where the magic happens. And there are so many different ways to experiment. Maybe you're experimenting with trying out a new medium. Maybe you're experimenting with where you want to be in life and where you fit. Maybe you're experimenting with habits, with daily routines, or you could be experimenting in a million of different other ways. But the reason I bang on about experimenting so much on the daily PEP is that it allows you to approach things with curiosity and I think it really helps to remove that sense of failure or success, which I know all of us can get so trapped into. But more than that, experimenting helps you discover parts of yourself that you probably wouldn't discover otherwise. Experimenting gives you the shovel that allows you to dig holes and find parts of yourself that are completely unexpected or you didn't know existed.

So my reminder and my encouragement for you today is this, put away the planning for a second. Follow something that you maybe even just be mildly curious about or have an inkling about. Try something you've never tried before or do something in a completely new way. The chances are that whether it, quote, fails or succeeds, you are gonna learn something about yourself along the way that you will probably end up taking to a bunch of other projects you do, and you are laying the framework and the breadcrumbs of things that you might not be able to see the big picture of right now, but that definitely lie ahead. So here's to leaning into that uncertainty. Here's to experimenting, and here's to finding parts of yourself that you didn't know existed, and really finding the treasure that awaits. Have a fabulous Thursday, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. Have a good one.

266: There is space for you

If you wonder whether your dreams are possible, this is the episode for you!

      Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. If you need a bit of a pick-me-up, if you need a reminder that you're not on your own, and if you need a reminder to keep going, well, you have come to the right place. Now, around here we tend to be the couragemakers and the rebel rousers. We're blazing our own trail, we're doing things our own way, and we're living a life according to our own values. And while there are so many elements of that we love, we'd be lying if we said that sometimes it doesn't feel a bit lonely. Sometimes it feels like it would be nice if more people got us, and sometimes it feels a bit frustrating because we can't necessarily see anybody doing what we want to do and we wonder if it's even possible. So today I want to share with you something that I found really helpful that came out of a conversation with my coach. We were having a conversation about how sometimes I'm worried about not being able to reach my dreams because I don't see anyone ahead of me doing it, and it would be nice to have someone to look ahead of me, not to copy their route, but just to know it's possible.

And she brought up a perspective that I just think is so invaluable, and I know it's really helped me, and I hope it's going to help you. She reminded me that if no one is doing it, then that means there's space for you. And that really changed things for me because I think we're so used to thinking, well, if nobody's doing what I want to do, then maybe that's for a reason because it's not even possible, and why should I even bother? But looking at it from this new angle, it is just full of so much possibility. Because if you look ahead of you and you don't see anyone that you can use as a beacon of light and a flicker of hope, It doesn't mean it's impossible. What if you saw it as a sign that there is space for you, and maybe you will become that beacon of hope for someone else? So whatever inklings of dreams you have, whether they're really clear or whether they're still a bit foggy, know that if there isn't somebody already doing it, that's not a sign to lose hope. And if there is somebody already doing it, See what you can learn from them, and also don't get discouraged because there is absolutely always space for you. No one has your unique combination of skills, talents, stories, strengths, experiences. You bring something to the world that nobody else has, and the magic is you do that whether or not you recognize those things in yourself already.

So keep going, know that there is always space for you, And know that right now you are that beacon for someone else. Have a good one.

Sometimes the gold can be found in the things we don't want. Today we're diving into how to find what you actually want.

                    Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. We are over halfway through the week, and if you need a reminder to just give things a go, you've come to the right place. Now, I am somebody who loves candles, preferably pumpkin scented or something really bright and colorful, but I love a good candle. Now, one of the candles I fancied for a while is one of those crackling candles. They're pretty big and they're purposely made to imitate the sound of a correcting fire. The wick is pretty big and they're pretty fucking fancy, so I decided to get one. I ran myself a really nice bath, and just as I was getting in the bath with a good book, I lit the candle, got in the bath, I led there for a good couple of minutes and realized it was really fucking annoying. The sound that I thought was going to be really soothing really just got under my skin and it wasn't long before I just blew it out.

And the reason I'm sharing this with you today is just a really friendly reminder that sometimes we don't know what we want until we get the things that we think we want. The fact is, often you don't know what you want until you try something. And sometimes the things you think you really want end up being the exact opposite. Now, this isn't me trying to shit all over your dreams. Rather, it is about really encouraging you to get curious about the things you want and give them a try before putting all your eggs in that basket. It's about experimenting. It's about leaning into that strong sense of curiosity that you naturally have. And it's about doing overthinking and planning.

It can be so easy to reduce this story to Meg bought a really shit candle. The end. But that would be completely ignoring the lessons that it has to give. And the lesson I ultimately want to share with you today is that when carving out, when building that creative, wholehearted, meaningful life that you dream of, it's so easy to think that all of the answers are going to lie in finding something that you really want, but often finding the things that you really don't want end up being more valuable. So today I invite you to reflect on the lessons that you've learned from your version of that really fucking annoying candle. And I invite you to get curious to see if there are actually any gems in there. So have a good day, have a good think, and I will happily be going back to my bog standard boring candles and loving them even more. See you tomorrow.

256: In praise of getting distracted

So often distraction is penned as this huge enemy. Today we're flipping that on its head and celebrating the fabulous things distraction can bring.

                      Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. You're listening to The Daily Pep, which is all about getting out of your own way and creating the things only you can do and leaving the world a brighter place. Now, one of the things that I think it's fair to say all of us struggle with is getting distracted. It doesn't seem to matter often how laser-focused we start out, there is always something else vying for our attention. I think we tend to see procrastination and distraction as the enemy, and today I invite you to think about it a bit more compassionately. While there are so many planners, so many apps, so many strategies, so many life hacks, and so many books books all about how to beat procrastination, what we often forget is that some of the greatest ideas in the world came about when somebody went down a random rabbit hole. And if you think about it, that's exactly what ideas are. We've all had times where we're trying to concentrate on one task and we end up doing something entirely different and either have a breakthrough or we end up finding something fabulous that we probably wouldn't have found otherwise.

So today I really invite you to stop beating yourself up when you fall down a rabbit hole. We all get distracted, we all have times when we just can't focus, and that is okay. In fact, it may lead to some of your very best ideas and your very best work. So here's to not pressuring yourself to being productive 100% of the time, because nobody can. You are not a machine. And you are not superhuman. And here's to finding good distractions, hidden gems, and unexpected things down the rabbit hole. Tomorrow we're going to be diving a bit deeper into this idea of distraction and procrastination, and I'm going to be sharing a reminder that we all need.

But until then, have a good day. I can't wait to see you back here bright and early tomorrow morning, and I hope you treat yourself with plenty of compassion today. See you tomorrow.
