1564: This will make your next Monday better

Today I'm sharing with you a really helpful and easy practice to give your next week's self a compassionate start to the week!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So it is the end of the week, and I reckon a Friday at the end of the week is a great time to somehow give our Monday self a pep talk. I've talked about this idea of your future self on previous episodes of the Daily Pep and I still maintain that we are usually much kinder to our future selves and have more compassion to our future selves than we do our present selves. And the thing about a Friday is that we tend to be done. We might be fresh out of facts, we may be so ready for the weekend, and we may be exhausted. And chances are, the pep talk or the bit of wisdom we would give to our Monday selves, well, we just don't hold back. We know what we need next week and we've just got that clarity. One of the things that we used to do in my now retired signature program One Woman Band Club was every Friday when we gathered to toot our horns, I would invite everybody to write write down a piece of wisdom for their next Monday selves.

And on our call on that following Monday, I would share it with them. And every single time. It was amazing. Just the intuition and the clarity and just how exactly spot on it was. So this Friday I invite you to do it for yourself. It only has to be maximum a line long. It can also be one or two words. Just get still for a second and think about what does Monday you need to hear.

And chances are you know exactly what that is. And part two is you find a way to share that with yourself. Now I find scheduling emails to myself really helpful for this. If you for example, know you're not going to look at your planner or your laptop until Monday, post it note can do a great job. Or you might find a fun alternative way. The important thing is is you get it out of your head. You get it somewhere and you put it somewhere that Monday you will find it. And believe me, we did this for over five years and it never ever stopped being magical.

And we were also always so amazed at how it just completely interrupts you in the dream chitter and just stops some of that Monday panic. Because you're rooted into what is really important. So what does your Monday self need to hear? Don't judge it. Trust what comes up. Find a way to share it with yourself. And go into next week knowing that you've got your own back. I hope whatever you're doing this weekend, you do something for you. You find some unexpected joy and that you remember as always that everything changes when you believe you matter. I look forward to being in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my wonderful email community, and you can join that by going to therebelrousers.com/letters or back in your lug holes on Monday. Either way, I'll see you then.

1563: Your challenge for today...

This Thursday, I have a teeny tiny challenge for you. I've made it ridiculously simple, and it might just add some creativity and curiosity to your day!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So for today's episode, I have a challenge for you, and I want you to try something new today. Now, you may have a day where you are up to your eyeballs, and I am not trying to add stress to your plate, but I bet there is somewhere that you can add something absolutely minuscule that you've never been before. It could be trying a new route somewhere or going down a street you've never been before. It could be reading a short poem on your lunch break. It could be listening to a track of an artist that you've never ever heard before in your life. And one of the ways I love doing that is by picking a country and having a look at their top 100 songs and just picking one of them. Trying new things is a great way of reminding our brains that we can do new things.

They're not always scary. It's also a great way of getting yourself out of a rut or your routines. And it's also a fabulous way of giving your curiosity and your creativity a jump start. Sometimes it can feel like life can get really small, or we're scrolling and we feel like everything's the same, and we forget that there is this huge, wide world out there full of fascinating things that we have never come across. And sometimes it's things that we might never come across unless we intentionally go looking. I know for me, I tend to play the same two songs on repeat for months. And just jolting yourself out of something that you usually do can be a great way of finding, creating and remembering dreams and things you want to do. And it can also help make us feel a bit more alive, which I think a lot of us are looking for.

So your mission today, if you choose to accept, and I really hope you do, is to try something or do something new. Make it embarrassingly small, and you might just find that it might be your unexpected joy of the day. Have a good one. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1562: Curate your season

Today we're diving into everything intentional living, and the opportunity to curate our own seasons.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So I'm about to embark on our next travel adventure, and it will be the first one where we've taken a flight as opposed to driving across Europe. And my goodness, I. I did not realize just how much I had packed our car to full capacity until I realized just how little you can get in a suitcase. And one of the things that has made me do is really kind of curate what I'm going to focus on during this season. I literally can only take a couple of books. I have maybe five outfits at best, and I've had to be really, really intentional about every single decision I've made. And I think that's something we all have in common around here, that we're trying to build intentional lives.

And sometimes you do have occasions, like this coming trip, where you're kind of forced to curate and edit things down in a way that I think can be really helpful. So for today's episode of the Daily Pep, I thought it could be interesting to spend a bit of time thinking about what kind of a season you're in in your own life or what chapter you're in, like we talked about on Monday, and what's needed for this particular season and chapter. And with many things in life, I've often found reverse engineering and figuring out what I don't want to be incredibly helpful and often gives me more clarity opposed to the blank page of what I do want. So maybe it's about thinking, what do you want to let go of in this season of your life? Or what do you just no longer have room for? It doesn't have to be big. It doesn't have to be profound. It doesn't have to make sense to anybody else but you. But as we're coming into the spring in the northern hemisphere, it can be a really good time to think about what things we want to spring clean, what we want to let go of, and what we are just over now. If not much comes to mind, I invite you to literally think about your suitcase and think about having very little space in there.

Maybe space for a couple of books, a couple of art supplies, and really think about what projects are you excited about right now? What are you intrigued about? What is your capacity at this season of your life and what could bring you joy. So happy thinking, happy curating, and I look forward to back with you tomorrow in what I hope is sunny Bulgaria. I'll see you tomorrow.

1560: Create your own chapters

Today we're taking back control of our own narratives and our own lives, and getting experimental about our current and next chapters!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So by now you've probably heard of that quote or saying that goes, do it for the plot. And I love that it can really encourage us to go try new things for the sake of it and just go and see what happens. But there are also so many other book metaphors that can make such a difference to our lives. And for me, one of them is thinking about chapters. And we've also heard the other saying that when one door closes, another door opens. And while that's true, there's this kind of air about it where, you know, life happens to us and reframing the things that happen to us. But I think with chapters, there's an opportunity here to really take back control a little bit and also have some fun.

Many of us are big readers around here and we will have read books with the most gigantic chapters that don't seem to end as well as the really micro punchy chapters. There are so many different ways to play with the same form and we get to decide what kind of chapter we're in. And we can decide when we open the chapter and when we close the chapter. So often we use external markers to really carve out the different chapters of our lives. But what if we had our own internal bookmarks? Because there is nothing to say that you can't start a brand new chapter today exactly as you are, no fixing required, and maybe a bit more experimental than the last one. The status quo would say that starting things happens at the start of new year, on your birthday, at the start of a new month, or the start of a new week. And I say fuck that. You can start your new chapter anytime you like.

It can be as long as you like, as short as you like. It only has to work for you. There will definitely be an element of mystery as to what happens in the story, because there always is. But there are some things that you can define and you can choose for yourself. So here's to a new chapter. Here's to really fucking enjoying the one that you're in. Here's to bringing your current chapter to an abrupt halt if you need one. And here's to remembering that you know you best. Have a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.

1557: It’s not just about time management

Move over time batching, there’s a new b*tch in town!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, I have a practical tip for you. So when it comes to getting shit done, we hear a lot about batching things, and while batching things can be helpful, it If you are an overachiever like me, then it doesn't necessarily always go to plan because my temptation is always to beast mode things, and I also give myself way too much to do. I've spent the past 10 years learning how to work with my brain rather than against it, and I know that batching can tend to lead to burnout for me. But something that is helpful is bundling similar tasks that require a similar type of energy. And bundling can just be two things. It doesn't have to be an endless amount of things. Say you're making a phone call that you've been putting off, do another one you've been putting off at the same time.

For me, for example, recording an episode of The Daily Pep is much better done straight after one of my coaching calls or group programs because I'm already in that brain space. What I found is even though generally speaking, I want to go and slob out on the sofa. It's going to take me 10 times longer later because I've got to ramp myself up and get myself into that headspace again. Whereas while it might feel slightly like an extra lift, it's better to do it in the moment while I'm there instead. This can also work really well if you are somebody who struggles to respond to people, be that friends, loved ones, or colleagues. And having a 15-minute sprint where you just get back to as many people as you can in 15 minutes can often save you a lot more energy than if you build up to one at a time over a period of, say, a week. What I'm trying to say here is it's about energy management, not just time management. It's not necessarily about efficiency and saving time as much as it is limiting the time that we spend resisting doing things.

And taking advantage of building ourselves up, going with the energy when it's there, rather than it becoming yet another thing that you dread doing. So here's to bundling, not batching, unless batching works for you. And if you're curious about your own processes and want to understand them a bit more, and you want to find out why some things are harder for you than other things, and your own patterns when it comes to places you thrive and places you struggle My Rebel Archetype Assessment is designed to help you do just that. It is a genuinely helpful tool. It's also really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed adding some Dolly GIFs, and it might just be the confidence boost you didn't know you needed today. So if you don't already know your Rebel Archetype, you can go find it by going to therebelrousers.com/quiz and enjoy nerding out over your own brain. Have a good one, happy hump day, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1555: Acknowledge what you're doing right

As we head into a new week, we're going to set the record straight on our inner dreamsh*tters!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday and a very happy start to the new week. Now, if you got all of us in a room together and asked us what we were struggling with, the answers would be plentiful. For some of us, it is managing our time and energy. For others, it's getting going and just getting shit done. And I think many of us struggle with a very loud inner dreamshitter, because I know if again in that same room I asked us all what we're doing right, the answers wouldn't be quite as forthcoming, and it would take a while to get there. And there are so many reasons for that. That is not a you thing, it's an all of us thing. Because our brain has a negativity bias, it tries to keep us safe, and we tend to keep hold of any criticism, constructive or not, way longer and way tighter than any compliment.

So as you're going about your day today and maybe thinking about a fresh week and maybe a habit that you're working on or something you want to start, I want you to stop for a second and think about the things that you are doing right. Maybe a habit you built that you built ages ago and now take for granted. Maybe something you started and something you've done that you've completely forgotten about. And the areas of life that don't need huge drastic improvements. For all of us, probably in every aspect of our life, we have these little tiny improvements we can make. Sometimes big improvements or big areas of construction are needed, and that is perfectly normal. But look at everything that you have done. We're not so great at doing that.

It is so easy to look at the future and look at the gap between where we are right now and where we want to go and focus on just how massive that gap is. But rarely do we stop and look at just how far we've come. You might not be where you want to be. That's okay. I think that's also part of personal development. Sometimes the more connected we are with ourselves and the more we grow and the more we are into personal development, we see how far we'd really like to go, and that's okay too. I just think sometimes it is worth taking a bit of a pit stop and looking behind you and allowing yourself to maybe even feel a bit proud of where you've come from and let yourself motivate you and inspire you on the path ahead. So here's acknowledging all the things you have got right.

Here's to knowing that if you can't see them right now, it doesn't mean there are none. It maybe means that your inner dream shitter is louder than normal. And if that is the case, remember that your dream shitter spouts absolute bollocks and will say whatever lie it needs to, to keep you safe and to stop you from doing the scary thing. Truth is very rarely relevant. So I hope you have a fabulous start to your week. I hope you find some wonderful pockets of joy, and I can't wait to be back with you as always tomorrow morning. Have a good one.

1554: Go on a wonder hunt

To wrap up this week on The Daily Pep!, I have some very human homework to invite some light in.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So to wrap up this week's Daily Pep, I thought I would share a quote with you that really resonated with me and is something that I think a lot of us just need to hear and think about as the world feels the way it does right now. So I've recently got into the novels of Catherine Ryan Hyde, and there's one passage in her fabulous novel 'Have you seen Luis Velez?' that really struck a chord, and it's this: 'The world is terrible and wonderful at the same time. One doesn't negate the other, but the wonderful keeps us in the game. It keeps us moving forward.' And if you're anything like me and the fabulous women I get to work with, shit has felt heavy lately, which is the biggest understatement ever. But the reason I love that quote is because it doesn't bullshit us. If you've been around here a while, you'll know all too well that I think "good vibes only" is toxic as fuck, and yet we do need to find a way to keep going. And holding those two things in our hands at once, and having it as a "yes, and" rather than an "or" or invalidating one of them, can feel incredibly complicated.

But it is one of the most helpful things we can do, and I think we are definitely, whether we like it or not, getting used to living in the nuance. I am a firm believer that joy is an act of rebellion, and that one of the things that we have to do as humans going through this is fight as hard as we can to retain some sense of wonder, some sense of awe, and to remember that there are good bits. Like the quote says, one does not negate the other, but it is the wonder that keeps us in the game and in moving forward, and I think many of us need a bit of a wonder treasure hunt right now. The messy thing about being human is that we have to find a way to hold grief and pure rage in the same hand as joy and wonder is part of what actually helps us stay human. So that is your very human homework for this weekend. I want you to go and find some wonder. That could look like spending time with people who light you up, intentionally doing something that really makes you smile for no other reason than it makes you smile, or go spend some time with some baby things if you can, whether that's baby flowers, baby humans, baby animals, And remember that life can be pretty fucking incredible, it can just be hard to remember it sometimes. Have a hopeful weekend, look for the wonder, and I'll be back with you on Monday, in your ears as usual for another episode of the Daily Pep, or in your inbox if you're part of my fabulous email community, where I'm sharing all of the behind-the-scenes stuff about my upcoming trip to Bulgaria.

And if you want to join me on that journey, you can join the email community by going to the link in the show notes or by going to therebelrousers.com/letters. Either way, I'll see you then. And remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1553: A tip for all us people pleasers

Today I'm sharing something simple you can do that might feel a bit uncomfortable at the time, but your future self will be seriously grateful for.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So for today's Daily Pep, we are celebrating the power of the pause. In a world where everything has to be instantaneous and everything is so reactive, where we feel like we have to have got everything done yesterday and we have to have the right answer at the right time, I just want to remind you that in most cases you are able to, and it probably is best, to take a pause. It can be so easy to forget to check in with ourselves, only to agree to things we really wish we didn't say yes to, and then have to spend even more time trying to get out of it. Or dreading having to go to the thing itself. The same is hard conversations. I have a rule where I don't answer the phone, I don't answer a message if I'm angry, and I will sit on it for a bit. And all too often we feel like we have to work to everybody else's timescale and forget that we can just give ourselves a second.

Things like, "I'll let you know," "I'll get back to you on that," "Let me have a think," are all are absolutely valid responses, but if we're people pleasers, they tend not to be the first thing that comes to mind, and it does take a bit of practice, and it can be a little bit uncomfortable to begin with. Also, remember that "I'm at capacity" is also a perfectly valid response, and not everybody has equal access to your precious time and energy. So here's to reinstating the pause. Here's to checking in with yourself first before you agree to something, and here's to knowing that your response and how you feel is perfectly valid. You don't have to become a pretzel for other people, and sometimes a slightly uncomfortable no saves you a fuckload of time and stress further down the line. Have a fabulous rest of your day, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1552: It's time to get out of research phase

Around here, we're fiercely curious, and our dreamsh*tter loves research because it's so much less scary than doing the thing! So today's Daily Pep! is a jolt of encouragement to take the first imperfect step!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day and we are very nearly halfway through the week. So for today's episode, I thought I would share with you something that I have been needing to remember a lot lately. And I've got a feeling I'm not the only one. When it comes to new things or creative projects, we are both very conscientious. We want to do a good job, and we are also fiercely curious. And what that means is that sometimes we can get stuck in the research phase for slightly too long, and then the whole thing just gets even scarier. What I found is there tends to be a bit of a sweet spot where you know the next step and you're still excited, and your dream-shitter hasn't taken center stage yet.

I often find that if I linger after the sweet spot, I tend to start talking myself out of it. I convince myself I just need to do more research, and there is always more to learn, and there is always more research to be done. So this is my official reminder to both of us that we will learn what we need to along the way. As long as we are not self-teaching ourselves open heart surgery, which we shouldn't be anyway, chances are we can pick up the skills along the way. And often we really do learn so much more and also so much quicker by just doing the thing. So if you are finding yourself stalling, if you've moved past that sweet spot, and if your inner dreamshitter is cheering all of the research on, then now is the time to take some imperfect action. Chances are you already know enough, you can find out what you don't know when you need to, and it'll probably also be a lot easier to get going because you're actually enthusiastic while you're doing it and you've got the momentum, rather than having to talk yourself into it. You know enough, you can learn the rest on the way, and just be discerning for when research, becomes a helpful thing to hide behind because it feels more comfortable than starting.

Remember all the things that you've started before. Don't worry if you haven't finished them, that's not what we're talking about. Just lean into that first imperfect step and give yourself some forward momentum. And if you want to find out more about your own patterns and what might help you get started and what tends to make you stop, and you haven't already taken my Rebel Archetype Quiz, I think you're going to find it really helpful. And you can find your own rebel archetype as well as some very fun Dolly Parton gifts over at therebelrousers.com/quiz. I'll see you tomorrow.

1550: You Don't Need Inspiration. You Need a Tiny Ritual

Around here we're all too good at carving out time for others when they need it the most, but when it comes to ourselves it's a whole other matter. So today's episode is part permission slip, part bossy homework to claim some time for yourself.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So you probably just heard that this episode is sponsored by The Willoughby Book Club, and I thought it'd be really fun today to share with you 3 really tiny reading rituals shared by Marianne, the founder of Willoughby Book Club. It first appeared as a blog post on their website, especially for the Daily Pep collaboration, and I've popped the link in the show notes. So, Marianne sees reading as a creative act. She writes, "Reading is sometimes framed as passive, but it is anything but. When reading becomes a small daily ritual, your mind starts gathering ideas without you really trying, a phrase that stays with you, an interesting word, a concept or new perspective that begins to nudge your thinking in new directions. Those tiny sparks are often where creative work begins. And the good news is that creative rituals do not need to be grand.

5 pages of whatever book you fancy is enough, or 10 minutes before bed, or a chapter with your morning coffee. And tiny habits are powerful precisely because they are manageable. They They slip quietly into your routine, and over time, they add up to something surprisingly meaningful. Now, books in particular are wonderfully generous companions for this kind of ritual because they invite curiosity, they introduce new ideas, and they remind us that imagination is a place we can visit wherever we like. So here are her 3 tiny creative rituals you could try this week, and she says the simpler it is, the more likely it is to stick. So number 1, the 5-page ritual. Keep a book somewhere visible, beside your bed, next to the kettle, or tucked into your bag, and read just 5 pages a day. That's all.

No pressure to finish quickly and no reading targets, just 5 quiet pages that belong entirely to you. Number 2, the beautiful sentence. When a line in a book stops you in your tracks, write it down. Use it as a prompt for journaling or the spark of inspiration to paint or draw. And number 3, the 10-minute pause. Set a timer for 10 minutes and read without distraction. No notifications and no multitasking, just a small pocket of time for your imagination to wander. So try these on for size this week, especially if you've been struggling to get into a book or you've had a book on your bedside table for so long that it has collected so much dust.

And I want to finish off with Marianne's small permission. She says, perhaps the most important thing about tiny rituals is that they give us permission. Permission to pause for a few minutes in the middle of busy days, permission to follow curiosity rather than productivity, and permission to enjoy something simply because it feeds the imagination. A few pages of a book, an unplugged walk, or a moment spent writing down an interesting thought might not look like much, but these small pauses create space for ideas to surface, for perspectives to shift, and for creativity to breathe. And sometimes that small space is all we need. So thank you, Marianne, for our fabulous pep talk to kick off this week. Here's to finding a really good book And here's to those teeny tiny rituals and the fact that they are often more than enough. I'll see you tomorrow.

1549: You don't have to optimise every minute of the day

If you struggle with feeling lazy, I’ve got a bit of a challenge for you this weekend!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So one of the things many of us have in common around here is this belief that we are lazy, and honestly, it could not be further from the truth. But because so many of us have this belief that we are lazy, what we can end up doing is trying to maximize every second of every day and trying to fill and optimize any bonus moments we get. Let's face it, if we look around us, there is always shit to do, and there is generally never anybody telling you that it's okay, you can pause for a minute,, and you can actually enjoy a bonus couple of minutes if something gets cancelled, if plans unexpectedly change, or if you find a spare half hour here or there. So my task for you this weekend is to look for the bonus moments, not as time to get more shit done or to tick more things off the list, but as time to do something you might not have done for yourself otherwise, or just intentionally decide to waste them. Often we feel like we are being haunted and chased by a grandfather clock, and sometimes that is the case. And sometimes what we can do to change our relationship with time and reclaim it and get a bit rebellious is to actually spend any bonus time that we have doing something that we actually want to do. Now, I'm not presuming for one second that any of us have heaps and heaps of bonus time or that we have simple lives.

I know that we have responsibilities and we have shit to do, but I also know that the efficiency of the shit we get done massively reduces when we are always on the go and trying to fill every single minute. So here's to going on a bit of a search for some bonus time. Here's to maybe being a bit uncomfortable by not spending it by getting even more shit done, and here's to remembering that you can do something to save yourself time and actually enjoy the time that you have saved. So that's a wrap for this week here on the Daily Pep. I can't wait to be back with you on Sunday in your inbox if you are part of my Letters of Rebellion community, and you can join that by going to the link in the show notes. Or back here bright and early on Monday morning as usual. Have a good one, and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1548: The courage to try something new

I’m kicking off a new experiment, so today’s episode is a reminder that while doing new things is scary, we do have the courage.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So next week there is something very exciting happening here on the Daily Pep, as I will be sharing and announcing the Daily Pep's first ever sponsor. Without spoiling too much. It is a business that is so aligned to the values of The Daily Pep. It's just such a cool thing that I love, and I know so many of you will love. And it's also a little bit scary. I have always really strayed away from doing sponsors and having ads because I am so protective of my work. And of you, my lovely listeners.

And I knew that if I ever wanted to do it, it would have to be companies that I firmly believe in, that I genuinely think you'll be interested in, and that there is an absolute values alignment. And the reason I'm sharing this today is just to give you a heads up and also to share that it is just really fucking scary doing things for the first time. And to remind you and me that if we're doing things for the first time, it all gets to be an experiment. We get to see it as a bit of an adventure and get curious and just see how it goes. Putting ourselves out there is just challenging. That doesn't mean we're doing anything wrong, it just means that it's a bit hard, and it also means that we care. So that is my news for you today. It's also my invitation For you to do the hard thing and put yourself out there too, knowing that we are both squirming about it.

And here's to holding on to our values like they're one of the most precious things we own, because they really are. Have a good one, and I will see you tomorrow.

1547: Something to remember during a confidence wobble

Today I’m sharing what I’m learning through my recent confidence wobble and today’s Daily Pep is a reminder to both of us that we’re not alone, and we’ve got this.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. Today I thought it would be helpful to share something that I've been going through in my own life because I think it is something we all struggle with, and I keep getting reminded of the same thing over and over again. And I figured that you might need to hear it too. So lately I have been having a right confidence wobble. The perfectionism has been out to play, the people pleasing has been there, the self-doubt has been off the charts, and my inner dream chitter has fucking loved every single second of it. And one of the interesting things about this particular confidence wobble, because there have been many, is that I've really noticed that I've been looking outside of myself for answers. I have been assuming that somebody will know exactly what I need to do, whether that is about life stuff or business stuff, and it has been so, so hard not just to get sucked into other people's confidence and other people's assertiveness, especially when they are claiming that they know all the answers. Now, most other days of the year, I would spot that a mile off because I am so not a fan of that.

I hate this guru shit. I know that nobody has their shit figured out, no matter how much effort they put into trying to make it look otherwise. But I have just been so suckered in because sometimes it is the easy route, and sometimes it is easier to try and borrow somebody else's confidence than it is to try and find your own.. But the thing that I keep circling and spiraling back to is that if I sit with myself, I know I've got the answers. If I get a bit quiet, I also know that I have my own back, and I know that nobody knows me better than me, which can sometimes feel a bit like a double-edged sword because I also know very well what my most successful avoidance strategies are too. So if, like me, you've been having a bit of a confidence wobble lately, I wanted to pop in and say you're absolutely not alone, and get even more selective than usual about whose voices you let in, because chances are your inner dreamshitter is really, really loud. And I think we also have some of our defenses down,, and bullshit that we wouldn't really give two shits about normally starts to feel slightly alluring. And I'm saying this to both of us.

We know what we're doing. We know deep down that we can do it, and if we're not sure what we're doing, we can rely on ourselves and trust ourselves to figure it out, even if it is really fucking frustrating that we always have to. See if you can find a way to get quiet and listen to that quiet voice. For me, that looks like journaling, and it looks like writing letters from my future self to my present self, or to my past self. And know that this is temporary, and it will pass. And if you are not currently going through a confidence wobble, I see you, I cheer you on, and you fucking got it. So that's what I've been thinking about lately. I hope you're having an unexpectedly nice week, and I hope a stranger gives you a compliment.

Happy Hump Day, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1545: You do have time (yes really)

Around here we're all too good at carving out time for others when they need it the most, but when it comes to ourselves it's a whole other matter. So today's episode is part permission slip, part bossy homework to claim some time for yourself.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It is a bright, fresh new week, and whether you're feeling it or you're feeling shit, the aim of this podcast is to start your day with a compassionate, if not bossy, bang. Now, for many of us, we do not have the time that we would like, need, or deserve to dedicate to our creative projects, to the things that make us feel alive, or to simply feel like a human for a little bit. But here's the truth, and while it might not apply to 100% of people, it will apply to 99.9% of people, and that is you can carve out 1 hour a week for yourself. Now, it might be across multiple sittings, but it can be done. And I know this because you so regularly do this for other people. How many times during a week do you find the space for unplanned but important conversations with loved ones? And also, I know I'm guilty of this, how often do you end up on your phone just scrolling through more shit? I think one of the reasons we feel like, and it is accurate for a lot of us, we don't have enough time is that the time we wish we had almost becomes like this fantasy idealized thing. But you don't necessarily need an hour continually uninterrupted surrounded by your favorite materials with just the right lighting and the perfect notebook. You do not have to go to a particular place.

You can just stay on the sofa with a TV show on in the background and scribble something in your journal. You can put a notebook or something you're working on on the kitchen counter and reflect on things while you're waiting for the rice to cook. And while you might have a special place you'd prefer to do the creative work, you can also just go with what is the easiest and most likely to happen. Now obviously this is partially a logistics issue and a practical issue, But also, I think it's a permission issue too, because if we're socialized as women, we are not brought up to believe that we can claim time for ourselves, and often it just becomes second nature to put everybody else before yourself. So in case you need to hear it, you are allowed to carve out time for yourself. And like when a friend or colleague rings up with some kind of emergency,. You are allowed to have your own emergency. You are allowed to put everything on hold and go tend to yourself.

So that is my encouragement for you as we start this week. I know many of us have wildly complicated and nuanced lives, and I'm not trying to prescribe a one-size-fits-all solution here. And it is true that sometimes one of the ways in which we have to use our creativity is getting creative about how we can even find the time for it. But know that you deserve that time. You do not have to earn it. And even if you have to find it in the margins, there will be some for you to take. Have a fabulous start to your week. I hope you find some unexpected joy, and I can't wait to see you bright and early back here tomorrow.

1544: Sassy Meg returns!

We’re wrapping up this week on the Daily Pep with a good old fashioned sassy one.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So this week we are ending with a sassy one, and I think it's been a while since we did one of these, so let's go there. Now, in the work I do, I get the joy and the privilege of of knowing so many women like us who maybe struggle with getting shit done, struggle with perfectionism, people pleasing, have so much great shit to give the world, and a really loud inner dreamshitter, alongside maybe a quietly rebellious streak where we just want to be fully ourselves, and maybe we've come to a bit of a fuck it moment in our lives. And today we're harnessing that kind of fuck it energy when it comes to people pleasing and the idea of disappointing others. So, for many of us, we would much rather say yes to somebody else to keep the peace, to avoid disappointment, or because we think we should. And what we forget is that sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes, when we are saying yes to other people, we're also saying no to ourselves. And the problem is it can feel easier in the moment to break our own promises to ourselves and to somebody else, but in the long term that leads to a lot of resentment, a lot of frustration, and it can make life feel just slightly unfulfilling and unsatisfying. And because we do it from a place of wanting to be helpful, being conscientious, being a good friend, family member, coworker.

Sometimes we can end up feeling grumpy or bitter and not really knowing why until we realize the full extent of maybe how often we've said no to ourselves. So I'm popping in with a firm but friendly reminder that every yes has a cost. Now, this isn't about becoming some total bitch and never saying yes again, ever.. But it's just a bit of a reminder to consider the fact that when you say yes to something, you are saying no to something else. And if we usually tend to end up on the bottom of our priority list in the first place, we might be saying no to ourselves more than we think. So if you want to put this into practice, I have a challenge for you this weekend, and it is to intentionally say yes to yourself. It doesn't have to be some massive thing. We're building a muscle.

I recommend maybe starting small if it feels a bit intimidating, but if you're like, fuck it, I'm all in, then please go all in. And I ultimately want you to remember that you do matter, your needs are important, you may have a fuck ton of things going on in your life, and so may your loved ones, and I'm not trying to diminish or invalidate that, but you also get to be part of the equation too. That is not selfish, it is very necessary. So that is your bossy homework for me for the weekend. Find a way to say yes to yourself. Know that in doing so, you are reminding yourself that you matter. And as always, everything changes when you believe you matter. So let's go get that. Let's claim our rebellion. And let's have a good one.

1543: If you're scared of starting, check this first

We've all got things we've wanted to start for years, and before we know it they take on a life of their own. Today we're looking at a part of the picture we often forget.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So for many of us, we've got something, at least one thing, that we really want to start, and maybe that's been really haunting us for a long time. It might be a new habit, it might be a project, and chances are if it has been a while since you've wanted to do it, then your inner dream-shitter is feeding you some right old shit about it. And often then, this thing that you once wanted to start takes on a life of its own, and it becomes so much more than just about what it was you wanted to start, but it becomes almost this huge representation of your self-worth, your discipline, your ability to follow through, and fuck knows your dream shitter is there to tell you all about it.

So today, I just want to interrupt that inner dream shitter, and interrupt that pathway that may be very well trodden by now, and instead of kind of rationalizing, or intellectualizing it, or arguing with your inner dream shitter, or trying to defend yourself, I want to remind you that we all have those things. There's nothing wrong with you. There's nothing to be ashamed about. And what is the very, very first minuscule, tiny, tiny, tiny thing you could do? That might not even involve actually taking the first step.

It might be almost the equivalent of getting a long-forgotten box down from the attic and seeing if you even want to keep it anymore. We've all had those things that we lug around with us and we keep for years and we don't look at them, and then we get them out and we think, what the hell is this shit? Or we're absolutely delighted to see them. So maybe that is the place to start rather than actually doing the thing. It may feel like taking a step backwards, but it is much better to decide whether it even aligns with what you want right now than ripping off the Band-Aid psyching yourself up to do something massive, to realize that you don't even want it anymore. And just to reassure you, if you're worried about not wanting it anymore, that can be scary, but also it creates space in your life for other adventures. And my goodness, I think we could all do with a bit more space. So think that one over today. Have a good one.

Remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. And that you, my dear, are one brave motherfucker.

1542: Two questions for when you’re overcomplicating things

If you're also a queen of overcomplicating and over thinkings things, then today I have two questions for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day, and if you have been overcomplicating things, then today's pep talk is for you. Before we properly dive in though, I want to give you a quick heads up and a friendly reminder that my free co-working taster session is happening this Friday. It's at 10 AM UK time. You're going to be in fabulous company, and we're going to get some shit done together and knock out some of the tasks either we've been really wanting to get around to or we've been plain old hiding from. If you would love to join us, whether you are familiar with the magic of coworking or you're intrigued and want to try it on, head over to therebelrousers.com/springdailypep. It is completely free, it's going to be fun, and I would love to see you there. So back to today's episode.

So I can be queen of complicating things, I can also be the queen of overthinking things, and I completely forget that Occam's razor exists, which is that idea that the simplest explanation is usually the best option, and then I completely beat myself up and I repeat the cycle. And I think we can all get caught up in this, and it is so easy because we are so close to our own lives. We know all the intricacies, we know all the nuances. Chances are we've looked at something from every angle because we are pretty conscientious around here. And then when we overcomplicate things, we then use that as a stick to beat ourselves with. So I have two questions for you today. Number one, are you overcomplicating it? And number two, is there a solution right under your nose that you haven't seen because you are too close to it? There are of course times where it just really is bloody complicated and there is no easy answer,, but there are many, many other times where we might benefit from stripping the question back to its core by taking out some elements that we might have added along the way and by intentionally breaking it down into its smallest part and starting with the first one instead. We tend to give ourselves such a hard time for overcomplicating things and overthinking things, but I think we forget that it can be the double-edged sword of having a really creative brain of having great analytical and critical thinking skills, which are much, much needed in the world at this time.

And we're compassionate, and we're empaths, and we see things from other people's perspectives, and we try to put ourselves in their shoes. So here's to remembering they are really, really good things to have. Not everybody has them. And here's to making things a bit simpler and a bit easier for ourselves. Treat yourself with more kindness than you think you could ever possibly deserve, and I'll see you tomorrow.

So if you'd like to come start our day together, get shit done, and knock some little fuckers out of the park, I would love to see you there. You can join the free session by heading to the show notes and clicking the handy link, or simply by going to therebelrousers.com/springdailypep, which is all one word.

And I want to actually dive a bit more into this today, the inspiration behind it, because there is so much we can learn and do from putting what we most need out there into the world. I'm doing this pop-up co-working club because I know it is what gets me to sit my ass on the chair and do things, and because I am having trouble getting shit done at the moment, even though I have so many creative projects I want to work on and think about all the time.

Actually getting me there with me and my ADHD neurospicy brain has simply felt like an absolute mammoth task lately. And I know this is what works for me. I know that I want to start my days differently, that body doubling, co-working, and community accountability really helps, and I know it helps other people too, so it's a win-win. So my question for you as we enter this new week is, how can you mix what you put out there in the world with what you know you need to? Because not only do you get to be part of the equation, but chances are other people are feeling it too, and it might just be helpful for them as well.

So here's to trying shit, here's to experimenting, Here's to creating the flexible structures that we need, and here's to knowing that they might just be win-wins as well. I would love to see you if you're around on Friday. You'll need to register in order to get the Zoom link, and it will just be a really lovely, cozy, low-stakes way to start the day. Have a fabulous Monday.

And I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow, and maybe in one of those little Zoom squares on Friday.

1539: It's f*ck it Friday!

Whether it's been a good week, sh*t week, or brave week, join me today in celebrating f*ck it Friday!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So this Friday I thought we'd do something that we haven't done in a long while, and we will have a happy fuck it Friday. So the rules are pretty much anything goes. So you didn't get everything done you wanted to this week? Fuck it. You feel brave and feel like sending that message you've been putting off? Fuck it, go send it. There's something that you've got planned this weekend that you really don't want to go to, and it doesn't really matter if you don't go? Fuck it. Or there's something you really do fancy doing, but it feels a bit Nerve-wracking? Fuck it, try it. I think we all know where I'm going here.

Fuck it can be such a good way of giving the middle finger to our inner dream-shitter, giving the middle finger to our fear, and also just letting us off the hook when we are the only person that's put us on the hook to begin with. The truth is, we are so damn hard on ourselves, and the conversations we replay in our heads, the scenarios that we beat ourselves up about, chances are the other people involved probably barely remember them. And sometimes you just have to have a really good fuck it Friday. Fuck it and down your tools and admit that what you got done was what you got done, end of story. Fuck it, you really need some time for yourself this weekend, so maybe you push the boat out with the time you feel like you're allowed for yourself or allowed to ask for yourself. And fuck it to your fucking dream-shitter! I know I say it a lot here, but I really mean it, and I don't think any of us can hear it enough. You are doing better than you think you are. You are discounting so many things you have already done.

You're discounting all the ways in which you have already been courageous. So fuck it, go after what you really want. Dare to see if you can give yourself what you really crave and what you really desire. And happy Fuck It Friday, whatever way you choose to play it. And if you fancy saying fuck it and skiving off work a bit and doing a really fun quiz, my Rebel Archetype Assessment is a very nostalgic throwback to those really fun kind of personality tests, but with the twist that it's actually genuinely really helpful and practical. And there's also a lot of Dolly GIFs. So if you haven't already found your rebel archetype, you can do that by going to therebelrousers.com/quiz, and that is a very pleasant and confidence-boosting rabbit hole to go down. And I can't wait to be back with you on Monday for a brand new episode of the Daily Pep, or Sunday in your inbox if you're part of my Letters of Rebellion community.

And you can find out more about that by going to the show notes. Have a good one, And happy Fuck It Friday!

1538: Don't fall for your dreamsh*tter's booby traps

Today we’re diving into all things courage, dream-chasing and the signs along the way.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So today I want to talk to you about creativity, dream chasing, and how we interpret signs. And that is inspired by the fact that today I bumped into my microphone, it fell on the floor, the stand snapped off, and it broke. Now, as you know, I've been doing the Daily Pack for a while. I've had this microphone for quite a while, and it has been all around Europe with me, unpacked and packed many, many times. So the fact that it broke, I'm just quite grateful that it took this long and it was just a stand that broke.. But I know that if I was at the beginning of this journey, it would be so easy to interpret it as, well, I guess that means that I shouldn't do the podcast, or maybe that's a sign. And it is so easy to buy into that.

And if we're being really honest, sometimes there's a bit of relief that comes with that, especially if the thing that we want to do is really scary. Sometimes it can be nice to have what we perceive as a bit of an out.. But as you might know if you've been around here a little while, I am not into interpreting signs in that way. I am not into manifesting, and some things break just because they break. You might be about to send a really, really important email and your phone dies, and that could literally just be because you didn't charge your phone. Our brains like to make sense of everything. Our brains like to find reason and logic And sometimes we completely bypass the literal logic and read more into it, and our dream-shitter gets its way. So here's to a broken microphone stand just being a broken microphone stand.

Here's to your phone dying during that important email because you didn't charge it. And here's to doing the scary things anyway. I know when I look into the future, And when it comes to chasing my dreams, the scary thing isn't falling flat on my face. The scariest thing is not having tried in the first place. So keep chasing after your dreams, expect breakages on the way, and try and avoid your dream-shitter's booby traps. I'll see you tomorrow.
