147: Let's talk about our empty notebooks!
Today we’re diving into our unfinished ideas, why they’re so important and what they can teach us.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women who want to get out of their own way and put epic shit into the world that only they can do. So one of the things I love thinking about, talking about, geeking out about the most is everything when it comes to creative ideas. All about how we have our ideas, how we record our ideas, and just that feeling in the moment when you come up with a good idea and you just run away with it. But today I just want to go over a specific part of the process and that's these kind of abandoned ideas. We've all got the kind of notebooks which we bought for a particular project where we only filled in a couple of pages and then we never went back to them because maybe we lost the enthusiasm or somebody said something and our interest in the idea, or our self confidence was knocked, or maybe just life got in the way. Now I think it is just so easy to see those notebooks on our shelves and feel guilt or feel failure or feel like, oh, yeah, that's just more evidence that I don't always finish my projects. But today I just want to offer up a different lens of how you see those notebooks.
It's so easy to disregard them, it's so easy for them just to become another talisman of things that we didn't do. But what if they're actually incredibly important? What if the point is the idea in the first place? Not the progress you made with it, not, not how far you were able to take it, but the real crux of the idea itself. Because sometimes when we go back through projects, whether we did them, whether we thought about them, whether they were a vague idea, when we start to go through them, we can look back and really strong patterns can start to emerge. We can really start to find out what's important to us. We can see how those projects are coming to life in different forms to our current ideas and. And it can also remind us of things that are really important to us that sometimes we just forget. And if, as you're listening to this, a certain idea is coming up, or there's this idea that just won't leave you alone, but you've been plagued by the fact that you haven't worked on it, or you just feel like the ship has sailed because it's been a while, maybe it's time to go back to that with fresh eyes and just instead of diving straight into it, see what it is about the project that really caught you in the first place. See what the elements are that get you really excited and see how you can bring some of that to your life.
Whether that's picking the project back up and just giving yourself all the compassion and all the forgiveness and letting go of some of that guilt and the things that feel quite shitty, or whether that's picking the project back up and giving it another go or just starting where you left off. Either way, I think our half finished ideas and those notebooks that almost sit there taunting us. I think they have so much to teach us and there can just be so much that we can learn from them rather than just being another tool that we use to beat ourselves up with. So today, get curious, get courageous, and see what they've got in store for you. I I think you might be pleasantly surprised and maybe you'll find some breadcrumbs that you either forgot existed or maybe it'll give you a completely new perspective on something you've been working on lately that's completely unrelated and maybe you never would have got there had you not just looked back at those old ideas. So here's to embracing all of our many beautiful notebooks. Here's to celebrating our ideas rather than using them as another stick to beat ourselves with. And here's to knowing that not all ideas have to be fully baked or finished, and we're diving more into that tomorrow.
So have a fabulous Thursday if you're enjoying the daily pep and would love more of where that came from in the form of weekly emails where I share all the most vulnerable bits and the personal bits that I don't share anywhere else when it comes to how I'm building my own creative, wholehearted life that I love. Then make sure that you're signed up to my Sunday emails. You can get in on them at thathummingbirdlife.com and click on Sunday Emails and I look forward to seeing you there. Until next time, have a great day and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

137: Growth vs fixed mindset
One of the biggest myths we face as creatives is this idea of innate skill or talent. We feel like we’re either born with it or we’re not. Today I’m debunking this with and sharing all about growth vs fixed mindsets.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast designed to inspire, encourage, and just rebel rouse you to do the things that only you can do. So yesterday's episode was all about this feeling like we need to know all of the answers and how well, basically, that's a load of bollocks. And today I want to build on that. Now, one of the biggest myths that we face as creatives is this idea of innate skill or talent. We feel like we're either born with it or we're not. Or if we're someone who's built their skills up over time, then maybe we have these feelings of being a fraud or somehow inferior. And today I just want to explore that a little bit.
So a couple of years ago, I came across the work of psychologist Carol Dweck. Carol has done loads of work around resilience and working out what is at play when it comes to how we approach setbacks and why some people bounce back and why for others, even the smallest of setbacks can just be devastating. Within her research, she came up with two phrases which she uses to explain this, and they are growth mindset and fixed mindset. And if you're in education or if you're a teacher, there's a chance you're very familiar with this. With the fixed mindset, Kara says, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. And they believe that talent alone creates success without effort. And with this one, it's all about seeing our character, creativity, and skills as just fix things that we can't change.
Either we have it or we don't. On the other end of the scale is growth mindset, where she says people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Brains and talent are just a starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. So we experiment, we thrive on challenges, and we're able to overcome setbacks. And the reason I'm talking about fixed and growth mindsets today is that I really want to undo some of the learning we have about this myth of being innately talented. Now, I'm going to be diving into ways you can build that growth mindset in future episodes, but really, the focus of today's episode is simply to provide an alternative from what so many of us grow up believing. You can build on your skills and your talents.
Success does not rely on innate ability and you can do so many things to change your mindset and how you overcome setbacks and work through things that don't go as planned. So I hope this is a bit of reassurance. I hope it's a bit of a permission slip and I hope it gets you a bit curious about what you can do. And that's it for today's episode. And if you're loving the daily pep and you'd love to get a letter from me in your inbox every week sharing the things I'm learning along my own journey to build a wholehearted life I love, be sure to sign up for my weekly emails at thathummingbirdlife.com I share the most vulnerable bits and things I don't share anywhere else with a fabulous community of courage makers and daily peppers. 135: The gift that comes with saying no
If you struggle with people pleasing and saying no - like many of us do - today's episode is for you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women who want to quit being the very own personal dream shitters and just be their own rebel rouser instead. Today I want to talk about one of people pleasing sisters, if you will, which is all about saying no. Now around here, we're all about building a wholehearted creative life that only you can live, but also one that makes the world a brighter place too. And because we're so values driven and because we just want to do what we can to help and make a difference in the world, it can be really hard to say no. We've all been in that situation where somebody has asked us something and before we know it, we've said yes without even considering our time, what we've got on our plate, or whether we even want to do the thing. We've all been in those situations where we've walked away from the conversation thinking, why or why did I say yes? And we just wish that we could just turn back time for a second. And we're just so frustrated with ourselves because we told ourselves we wouldn't do this anymore.
If it sounds like I'm reading your mind at the moment, it's because I've been in this place many, many, many times. But today I want to offer you a bit of a reframe. And the reframe is this. There is actually a gift that comes with saying no. Because when you say no to something, you are saying yes to something else. And you can choose what you say yes to. You can choose your priorities for whatever season of life you're in at the moment. You can choose to say yes to more time for yourself and your family.
You can say yes to pretty much anything. But a lot of the time saying yes starts with saying no. So maybe it's time to just get really clear on what you would like to say yes to. Maybe it's about getting all the colored pens out and just the big scrap of paper and just working out what you would like to say yes to in your life and getting really intentional about the decisions you want to make. And then from that you can really flip that on its head and work out, okay, if these things are actually really important to me and I want to make time for them, I want to prioritize the energy for them, then the things that don't fit within this framework, well, they just don't become an automatic yes. It really can be as simple as this. When somebody makes a request on your time or your energy or your skills, just pause. Remember that you don't have to give an answer in most cases right now and you have every right to say, I'll get back to you on that.
Saying no can feel really scary, especially if you're not used to it. But when you start to see the gift behind it and start to see all the ways that you can really start prioritising what's important to you, we can actually start to get pretty passionate about what you say no to. So that is your food for thought for today. Have a think about what you're saying no to and what you're saying yes to in your life and see if those things align with your values and how you would actually like to use your precious time and energy. I hope you have a lovely Tuesday. I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. Self-care has become a bit of a buzz word and it can be so easy to see it as just one more thing to add to your never ending to-do list. Today we're flipping that on its head!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It's the start of a new week, and this is the only podcast that is designed for creative and multi passionate women Did you start your day off with a bit of a compassionate bang? Now I know I am not the only recovering people pleaser around here. As people who want to make the world a brighter place and who are generally empaths, people pleasing can be a big thing for us. We don't like to upset people. We go out of our way to make sure everybody's happy. And often, we're the last on the list. So for today's daily pep, I just want to remind you that looking after yourself isn't selfish and that self care is really important.
Now I know that self care has become a bit of a buzzword. But today, I really wanna focus on the sides of self care that aren't glamorous but are still So important. It is so easy to get wrapped up in everything we see on Instagram and everything we see online about bubble baths and about Waking up super early and having a green smoothie and getting all the candles out, and while that can be so nourishing, I think we just don't make space for or we just don't talk enough about the elements of self care that we wouldn't necessarily photograph, But are just still so nourishing. It just makes such a big impact. And I'm talking about things like making sure you're getting enough sleep, Making sure that whatever medication you need, you've got enough or you've got some more on order, touching base with loved ones, And just all those little things that really do add up to a lot. And I mean, so much can be included under the umbrella of self care. I've even heard friends talking about using finance as a form of self care in terms of looking after your future And also the huge one which I think most of us struggle with which is having enough to drink. I know I can hold 2 hands up in the air for that one, And I know I'm not the only one. So take a couple of seconds and just get a quick snapshot of where you are, how you're feeling, and what you need right now.
And know that the most nourishing self care and the best things you can do for yourself aren't there, quote, sexy things that you see on Instagram? You probably wouldn't wanna take a photo of it, and you probably aren't gonna tell people about it because it's not that interesting. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't have a huge impact If we get really honest, all the kind of Instagramable self care can actually just start to feel a bit stressful because It becomes another should, another thing on the to do list, and that's the last thing that we're trying to achieve here. So no matter what your life circumstances are, no matter how much time you've got, no matter how small the pockets of time you have, Work out what you need the most and see if there's a way you can get there. Because looking after yourself is never selfish no matter How we're made to feel no matter what we're taught as women and no matter how much you've got on your plate. And lastly, remember that self care is a muscle. If it's something that you're not particularly used to building into your life, it is gonna take a while to get into that routine and that rhythm. So know that starting small is the way forward. It's not about having the bells and whistles version right now.
It's about starting small and building it from there. So I hope you have a fabulous start to your week. I hope you do something for you. And if you miss your dose of rebel rising and encouragement on the weekend, Make sure you're signed up to my sender emails where I share the most vulnerable bits, things that I don't share anywhere else, and just things that I'm learning along the way of Building a wholehearted creative life that I love.
