481: Dream big, start small

Today I'm sharing one of my favourite pieces of advice, complete with an analogy!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So this week on the Daily Pappas, I am sharing my favorite pieces of unconventional listings to really help you get out of your own way and get shit done. And today, I'm talking about one of my very favorite things that I know if you've been around here before, you'll have heard me bang on about before. and it's this idea of starting small. Now I am a huge fan of having big dreams, but doing small actions. And what I mean by that is that it is so easy to completely intimidate ourselves and scare ourselves away from doing things because Either the start has to be perfect, or it just feels really, really overwhelming. I know there are many projects that I was so excited to start and habits that I wanted to do and goals I wanted to achieve that I put off because it just felt too big. In reality, I could have taken a small step and done another one and done another one and be there already years ago. But in the moment, it just felt too big, and I felt that the actions I could do were too small and they wouldn't make a difference. But let me tell you, that is absolute bollocks. We have to start small, and we have to break things down. In my world, there is no such thing as a step too small, and sometimes we really do need to, for our own sake, Take their ego hit and start almost embarrassingly small.

For everyone who knows me, they know I am definitely not a jogger, but I think it can be really helpful to think about this in terms of a bit of a jogging analogy. So rather than put any new diary, tomorrow at 6 AM, I'm going for jog, which I can tell you, I most definitely am not, and I don't think you could pay me to do it, and good on you for those of you who do. I digress. Instead of putting in your planner that you're gonna go for jog at 6 AM three times a week. We need to take that way back to the point that you think, yeah, of course, I can do that. So that first tiny step might look like getting up tomorrow whenever you get up, and put any running shoes by the front door. It does not look like putting them on. It does not look like leaving the house. It is just doing a small step towards that. If that one feels too small, then you go to, actually, putting your trainers on, and then maybe taking them back off again. And then the next step is putting your trainers on, leaving the house, and going for walk by the block, and so on and so on. Now this might feel slightly keyless, but bear with me. This is really important because a lot of the things that we struggle to motivate ourselves to do or things that we struggle to start There is a very real reason that we struggle, and it's called resistance. And we resist things because they're scary. because we've got on our head on loop, all of the times that we wanted to do something or aim to do something and didn't, so battling against that. And sometimes it can feel easier not to try, and this is definitely one of mine because at least any serious after disappointment if it not working out. Now what I'm trying to say here is that our resistance gets in the way of starting and what started as seemingly small thing can become this huge mountain that we've created in our head. But the truth is action begets action and doesn't matter what size action that is.

So when it comes to making any change in your life, taking your dream seriously, and really showing up for yourself. Start small, make it really achievable, and build from there. You'll be surprised just how far you come in quite a short period of time by making it that bit easier on yourself. And believe me, Big dreams can definitely come from small everyday actions.

So today, have a think about something you've been wanting to do that you've been putting off for whatever reason. And I challenge you to get ridiculous about this. Think about the literal smallest possible thing you could do. and set yourself a goal to do that tomorrow. See what happens when you do it. And I think you'll be pretty bloody surprised. Here's to overcoming our resistance. Here's to remembering the stories of the times that we did do it and using them as evidence instead. And here's to knowing that by listening to Seppo, you are part of a very fabulous and brilliant community. of women taking very, very tiny steps that are making huge ripples in the world. I can't wait to see you tomorrow.

        477: Some counterintuitive wisdom

Today I'm sharing one of my favourite pieces of unconventional wisdom!

        Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is the middle of the week, it is hump day, we are over halfway through, and today I want to share with you my most favorite piece of unconventional wisdom That is completely counterintuitive. So one of the things that we beat ourselves up about is not working hard enough or not getting enough shit done, and it can easily become a spiral where we're beating ourselves up, and then we're beating ourselves up about beating ourselves up, and it's just not a great place to be. But the truth is, no matter how unlikely it seems, you get way more done with compassion Than you do when you berate yourself. Taking a rest when things are seriously busy might seem like the last thing you should do, but the truth is we've all had those days where we are knackered, we are not getting much done, we just need to take a bit of a break, and then we come back to something and we can do something in 20 minutes that we tried to and failed to do in 4 hours. We have it so programmed into us to work harder, to work faster, to keep going, and to just push through. But the truth is, if we were actually a lot more kind to ourselves, we really would get more shit done. Now, for some of you, you might have been putting this into practice for a while, and warning, sassy Meg is about.

You can reluctantly agree that I'm right. And for those of you who just can't imagine this being true, I dare you to try it on for size and see what happens, because I have a very good feeling about this. And I think you might be surprised. So this hump day, no matter how it finds you, no matter how much you have or haven't got done this week, or how long or how short or how incomplete your to-do list is, just see what happens with a bit of self-compassion. Instead of just pushing yourself, tell yourself what you would tell your best friend or a loved one if they were in the same position, and really take on that advice for yourself. You do not become lazy when you apply self-compassion to yourself, and in fact, you actually become a lot more productive. And I mean, that's not even the point here. That is just a fabulous byproduct.

The fact is you get to be kind to yourself. You get to treat yourself fucking nicely. You don't treat other people like shit, so don't treat yourself like shit. So that is this Wednesday's pep talk for you. I hope it has put some pep in your step, and I can't wait to be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning. Take care.

        476: Leaning into ease

In today's episode, we dive into how leaning into making things easier doesn't make us lazy.

        Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily peppers and a very happy Tuesday. Now, I don't know about you but I am so good at overcomplicated things. I know we've talked a bit before about my love of plans and station Henry and also just how I am quite a messy person. And as we dived into yesterday, that is actually okay. So today, for all of my fellow overcomplicators out there, I want to ask you one question. What could you do to make things easier for yourself? Now the way I see it, easy has got a bad rap. This idea of doing things the easy way can feel like a bit of a cop out.

It has connotations for being lazy and since the whole idea of being lazy is one of our inner dreamshitters loudest Rallying Cries we tend to avoid the word easy. But I want to put a bit of a spin on it because I think we can use the word easy and we can use it to simplify our lives. We can use it to be more strategic and more efficient. And isn't making things easier for ourselves something that we aim to be all about? When we choose the easier way of doing things and importantly, we combine that with our values, we can actually have a greater impact and make a bigger difference and save some of ourselves for ourselves too. So I just want to put that question out there for you today. What can you do to make life easier for yourself? What is one simple change that you could do maybe to do with a daily routine life admin shit or a habit that could just take the pressure off a little bit and give you some breathing space. And just to clarify, we are not making things easier so we can fill that time with other shit. We are making things easier because things don't always have to be so complicated.

We all have the right to have time to ourselves and like so many people say, be a human being, not a human doing. And I think we need to take complicated off the pedestal that it's been put upon. So here's to leaning into ease. Here's to simplifying things. Here's to being more strategic and here's to being a bit less hard on yourself. See you tomorrow.
