1437: When’s the last time you did this?

If you're finding yourself in need of an extra dose of rebel rousing this hump day, then today's episode is for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. So I am popping in with a midweek reminder that it is okay to prioritize your own needs. And I want to ask you a question. When is the last time you did something just for you? Because around here we are very good at taking care of other people. We tend to be empaths and sometimes our needs slip to the bottom of the list. That is if they even make them onto the list in the first place. So if you are listening to this and you are regularly doing things for yourself and you can name the last time you did something just for you and it was recent, take this as a check in and a sign that you are doing really well and keep going. And if you can't quite remember the last time, this is not something to beat yourself up about.

It is simply a temperature check and time to put you higher up on the list. Remember that doing something for yourself does not have to look impressive, it doesn't have to cost you money and it doesn't have to make sense to anybody else but you. You know, you. You know your own needs and what might feel like an absolute treat to you might sound like hell to somebody else and vice versa. You don't need a reason to treat yourself, you don't need to deserve it and you don't need to earn it. Think about how good it often feels to do something else for somebody else just because, well, we are turning this round for ourselves. If you are trying to think of the best thing you can do and you're trying to optimise it, remember that this is a practice and you get many, many goes at this. And what we're building to long term here is this becoming a regular occurrence, not just a one off.

So have a think about how you're going to treat yourself today. If in doubt, go a bit silly and experience what it feels like to be on the other end of all the love you put out there into the world. So that is enough cheese for one day. Have a good one, happy hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.

1436: Let's separate fact from fiction

Today's episode is all about fact checking the stories we tell ourselves, and my experience of being called out by my Fitbit.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, I don't tend to be a particularly competitive person, but the person I am very competitive with is myself. Ages ago my Fitbit broke and I noticed that I'm just not doing as much walking anymore. So we're currently in Germany. I'm walking a lot more than I usually do and I saw one on a really good offer. So I am reacquainted with tracking my steps. But here's where it gets interesting. And actually nothing to do with walking and steps.

So something I've tended to give myself a really hard time about is my energy levels. If you asked me how much I sleep at night, I would say probably a good nine hours, if not more. Yet I could always go for a nap. So one of the things my Fitbit does is it tracks my sleep as well as a step goal. I've set up a sleep goal. Like I said, I get competitive with myself and lo and behold, I have not made it to 8 hours sleep in the past week and a half since I've had it. Often the numbers don't lie and I've become rather willfully ignorant of just how shit my sleep has been because I have been indulging in what many of us know as revenge bedtime procrastination. And it is rare that I actually get to sleep before 2am Yesterday we were talking about identifying patterns and and using them as a source of information and curiosity rather than yet another thing to give ourselves a hard time about.

And it got me thinking about the stories we tell ourselves versus the data. The story I've been telling myself about sleeping too much is wildly inaccurate and really does give me something to work with. And for me that's what a lot of this is about. It's about taking our power back, making intentional choices where we can and choosing ourselves. Now I know things like trackers and different ways of logging goals and logging different things can work differently for different people. And for some people knowing the numbers might actually cause more anxiety than it does calmness. So really go with what works for you here, because my invitation is to think about something that maybe you've been wanting to solve or something you're struggling with and just double checking that the story lines up with what is actually happening. If you see it as a bit of an experiment and just go on a bit of a fact finding mission, you might just find that this is a great way of working with yourself rather than opening 22 new tabs trying to figure out what is quote wrong with you.

So that is my invitation for you this Tuesday. And I look forward to being back with you tomorrow. I'll see you then.

1435: Getting curious about procrastination

We can take so much of our own power back by recognising our own patterns. Today we’re doing just that through the lens of procrastination, with a big dose of curiosity!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. Now, if you've been around here a while, it will come as no surprise to you that I am somebody who generally has hundreds of tabs open on my phone. The downloads folder on my laptop is complete chaos and while on the outside looking in, it may seem like I've got zero systems, there are many systems on the go, it's just that many of them only make sense to me. And that is all okay until I get to something I am procrastinating on. Suddenly I am coming up with complete brand new systems that, let's face it, if the past is anything to go by, I will spend hours, if not days, setting up and then completely forget they exist. And sorting out the tabs on my phone suddenly becomes a really urgent and important task. Now, today isn't about me beating myself up about this. I'm sharing what I've noticed about my own patterns as a bit of a prompt for you to think about your own what are the things that you generally don't really give a shit about but suddenly become a huge priority when you've got a deadline or when you're avoiding something or someone, or when you're procrastinating? Now, this isn't about coming up with different strategies to avoid procrastination because that also can be a wonderful procrastination technique.

But the important thing here and I'm going to roll my eyes as I say it. So if you're rolling your eyes as you listen, I get you. Awareness is key. When we can start to recognize our patterns, it's a bit like starting to learn a new language. We can start seeing what our dream shitter is really doing and we can make more intentional decisions about whether we want to be doing them and a friendly reminder that you get to give yourself full permission to carry on doing it Anyway. I know for me that there are some times where actually going through and starting to close some of the tabs gives me a bit of a break and some space away from a creative problem that's really needed. Sometimes it's a massive dopamine boost, and sometimes it can just be quite enjoyable, but other times it can just be more stressful because I end up feeling like I've got even more to do than I originally thought and we tend to know the difference. And I think it all comes down to this.

What if procrastination wasn't necessarily a problem to be solved but really, really helpful information to you? And what if you got curious about your behaviours and the things you do rather than being really judgy, that might be something to experiment with. So here's to the start of a new week. Here's to finding many unexpected joys along the way, and here's to recognizing your own patterns. We all have them. You're not doing anything wrong. Being a human can be fucking hard, and I think if you were given feedback to yourself from the perspective of a dear friend rather than yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised at how you're doing. Have a wonderful start to your week and I'll see you tomorrow.

1434: The joy (and possibilities) of saying no

As we close out the week, we can start to give ourselves a really hard time about the things we haven't got around to. So today I'm offering a joyful reframe.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. So on a Friday we tend to end the week thinking about everything that we have done and when it comes to the things that we haven't done, usually we give ourselves a few really hard time. But as we close out this week, I really want you to have a think about all the things that you have joyfully not done. I want you to think about anything you said no to and recognize that as an act of courage. And I also want you to recognise the bullshit that you did not rise to or tolerate and the ways in which you said no, maybe overtly or not, that meant you could say yes to yourself, like we were talking about earlier this week. If you are a keen cook or a keen painter, then you will know that sometimes less is more. Society tells us just to do, do, do and keep going. But to borrow the cooking and the painting analogy, I know I've definitely cut dishes that were good that I added too much random shit to and they just turned out really vague or inedible.

And I've also painted things where I wish I'd just stopped a little bit earlier. And in case you need to hear it, I just want to remind you that you are not alone in having things left on your to do list at the end of the week. There is nothing wrong with you. Sometimes a task just breeds. Sometimes our week is completely different to what we imagined and oftentimes things take so much longer than we think they will. If you are listening to this beating yourself up for saying yes to too many things, know that you are also in good company and I invite you to think about what would next week look like if next week's definition of success was how many times you said no and how many times you chose yourself instead. So lots to think about. I hope you find some fabulous, unexpected joy this weekend and do something for you and I can't wait to be back in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my glorious email community or in your wonderful ears on Monday for another dose of rebel rousing and encouragement. Whatever you do, choose you and I'll see you soon.

1432: The flip side of saying no

If you're finding yourself in need of an extra dose of rebel rousing this hump day, then today's episode is for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So on Wednesdays is hump day and chances are you might need an extra dose of motivation to get through the week. So here goes. Now I love this whole question about what our future self will be grateful for. It can be such a good way of putting things into perspective, into deciding what really does actually matter. And also we tend to be a whole lot more compassionate with our future selves rather than our current selves. But we also know that our inner dreamshitter will weaponize anything. So rather than it being a really gentle, compassionate question, I just end up thinking about all the shit I should be doing for my future self and I put even more on my current self's plate.

So today we are taking the power back from our inner dreamshitter and we're coming at the question from a different angle. So when it comes to thinking about what future us would be grateful for, rather than give her a shitload more to do, lets take some stuff off her plate. Is there anything that you've been meaning to say no to? Is there anything that you can intentionally decide not to do? And if you're feeling conflicted about saying no to something, have a think about the flip side of it. What would saying no allow you to do? What would you be able to say yes to and get curious and see what comes up? Future you probably doesn't need more things to do, and she would probably be much more grateful if you booked in some time with yourself, you cancelled some plans, and you said no to some stuff that you regretted saying yes to the minute you agreed to it. It's okay to tell people you're at capacity. It is more than okay to choose yourself. And chances are the future things that you're going to take off your plate will probably make your current self feel relieved as well. So two birds, one scone.

Have a think about what comes up for you. Get brave about saying no. And here's to being kinder to our current and future selves.

1431: Permission to quarter-arse the annoying things!

When you're values driven it can often feel that giving your 100% is a natural extension of you are, so for today's episode we're taking some of the pressure off.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. Around here we tend to be very values based and we're all about living a life with intention. And it's fair to say that we can beat ourselves up a lot when we don't feel like we're giving something our 100%, which as we know around here, our 100% is at the very least other people's 400%. And when it comes to being motivated, we try to be pure in our motivations as well. But the truth is that life involves doing a shit ton of things that we might not really give a shit about. I'm thinking of all of the infinite household tasks, the bullshit pieces of work that other people might be giving us, and the seemingly endless life admin. So today I want us to think about motivation a bit differently and really give you full permission into leaning into doing things for the very reason that you just want to get the fuck out of your life. I don't know about you, but oftentimes I'll put off doing something and I will spend at least five times longer than the time it would have taken to do the thing trying to work out why I'm not motivated and probably beating myself up about that.

But as we all know, not everything is that exciting. It is okay to dread things on your to do list, even if you don't think you should be. And resistance is part of being human. So if there is something that you've got to do and the resistance is real and you've been really procrastinating on it, and you've been giving yourself a really hard time about it, so it's become so much bigger than the original task. Take this episode as permission to rage. Do it to really question whether it needs to be there in the first place, and also to remove that second layer of beating yourself up about the thing. There are many things in life that we could do with quarter arsing, let alone half arcing, and that doesn't make you a bad human. We cannot be excellent at everything.

And I know, for example, I have absolutely no desire to be excellent at vacuuming or ironing, even though my inner perfectionist could easily convince me otherwise. So here's to getting the fuckers done just because it is a relief and it'll be less annoying and exhausting to carry them around. And here's to embracing not being brilliant at everything. I'll see you tomorrow.

1430: Fact checking your inner dreamshitter

After a weeklong horrific ear infection, I’m back with a hearty middle finger for our inner dreamshitters!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you. I am so glad and relieved to be back with you with brand new episodes this week after having a horrific ear infection last week. If you'd have put headphones on me last week and asked me to record, I would have screamed. So I'm going into this week with so much gratitude that I no longer feel like I want to saw my ear off and a helpful reframe when it comes to beating ourselves up. Now around here we should all get first class honours for berating ourselves. And we are pretty good at taking credit for shitty things that just aren't our fault. Take my ear infection. I was feeling pretty shit that I couldn't sit down and record new episodes.

That was until I realized it wasn't really an option. So my question for you to kick start this week is where are you beating yourself up for something that A isn't your fault, but B going ahead with it just simply isn't an option. My example directly relates to physical health, but I also want to remind us about that brilliant quote about mental health as well, which is that if it costs you your mental health, then it simply isn't an option. I know that hearing this doesn't automatically stop us from beating ourselves up, but it is a different perspective to add into the mix. Maybe it can squeeze into a tiny gap in your brain which is covered in shadows that your dream shitter can't see, and maybe you can meet it with curiosity rather than judgment. So here's to giving ourselves a fuckload of grace for all the things that we can't do this week. Here's to beating ourselves up even 20% less. And here's to knowing that choosing ourselves is not selfish and it is instead very, very necessary and also not an option.

I hope you find some unexpected joy this Monday. I look forward to being back with you tomorrow. And remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1424: Seasonal opportunities

Today we’re channeling the September energy and taking stock of where we are right now, and what opportunities we have right in front of us.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Around here, we tend to honor the seasons, whether that is literally or whether it is the seasons of our own internal life. And on that note, today I want to ask you, what opportunities are there in this current season of your life right now? I know spread across all of us. We're all going to be in wildly different seasons and there might be some really fabulous things happening and there might also be some shitty things happening and they might also overlap. Oftentimes it can be easier wishing we were in a different season or planning for the next season, but sometimes I think we miss some treasure right in front of our nose. This isn't about toxic positivity and making a crap time into a good time. It's just about looking all around you and looking at your particular circumstances and seeing if there's anything that this particular season right now gives you that maybe others haven't. Or maybe it is a really good opportunity to practice saying no at the time of recording this.

It's coming up to the autumn equinox and maybe that aligns with where you are and you're thinking about harvesting things and letting things go. Or maybe you're really leaning into the planning season of September and it actually feels more like spring. This is your opportunity to have a bit of a check in in regards to where you are, how you're doing, and what you really need right now. So as we head into the weekend, have a check in with your internal season and also see if there's any opportunities you might have missed. And then because we are rebels around here, check in with yourself as to whether you want to embrace that opportunity or not, because you are allowed to turn things down and you know what feels best for you. I hope whatever you do this weekend you find some unexpected joy. I can't wait to be back with you in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my email community. If you're intrigued about that, head to the show notes and look for the link or in your fabulous ears as per usual on Monday.

I look forward to seeing you soon and remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1422: 3 questions to challenge your inner dreamsh*tter

If worry and catasrophising are your go-tos, today I'm sharing three questions to interrupt that train of thought!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So this hump day, I want to pose a question to you that I've often asked myself. And it can be both frustrating at times and also incredibly liberating. And it is this. What if all the things you're worried about happening just didn't happen? When it comes to putting yourself out there in the world, what if all the critics that you imagine are going to appear simply didn't? Now I know life doesn't really work like this and I haven't just single handedly cured anxiety and my goodness, if I had a cure I would absolutely be sharing it. But I do think it is worth comparing the reality with the future that we have in our heads. I know when I started the daily prep, my dream shitter fed me with so many stories about all the things that were going to happen and none of them were great. But what I can also say is that five years later none of them came true.

And I am so fucking glad, to put it mildly, that I went for anyway, because at least I found out the reality rather than always trying to predict what was going to happen and never ultimately knowing. And I think there's a follow up question here that can be really helpful as well, which is what if the things that you're scared of, what if they did happen and you were able to cope with it? Okay, you might not have loved it, but you were able to deal with it. I think that is somewhere that we very rarely allow ourselves to get curious about and wonder about. But I think for all of us, we have all got through periods that we never would have believed that we would have if you described them to us. But often when push comes to shove, we are way more skilled and we are way more resourced and we are way more competent than we think. I know for me that I regret the things that I didn't try way more than the things that I did try that went a bit wonky. And while I absolutely roll my eyes about this next one and I completely forget about it in the moment, we can learn a hell of a lot from failure. So those are some things for you to noodle on today as you're thinking about things that you'd love to try, or things that you'd love to do, or things that you're nearly doing.

But it all feels a bit scary. And because I can't seem to stop asking questions today, one last question. What if actually you really are good at having your own back? I'll leave it there have a good one and see you tomorrow.

1421: The power of 20 percent

If you've ever struggled to lower your expectations or struggled when someone tells you to do a 'good enough' job, this one's for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So there's a question I've been asking during my workshops and during my groups lately that has become incredibly helpful, and I want to share it with you today. So when we talk about lowering our internal expectations and taking the pressure off ourselves, it can sometimes be helpful to think about getting a B rather than an A or doing a good enough job. But for most of us, that feels pretty vague and also slightly impossible. The same way as when we think of giving something 70% of our effort, not 100% of our effort, we can get way too caught up with thinking about all the details that we'll miss if we only do 70% of the job. And there's just a tiny shift that we can make. That and I'm getting meta here can make this whole being easier on ourselves get a bit easier. And it's all about focusing on 20% instead.

For example, how could you get 20% more comfortable than you are right now? How could you be 20% easier on yourself? And how could you save your last 20% for yourself? For some reason, that just seems to land so much better with me or the fabulous people I work with, and it's just an easier question to answer. We can then start looking at the tiny things that we can do. We're not necessarily looking at the entire picture and it just breaks it down a bit more. So whatever today and this week has in store for you, how can you be 20% easier on yourself? Think about what that would tangibly look like and dare yourself to go there. Like I've said many times on the Daily Pep, our 50% is most people's 200%, and we deserve to live lives that aren't totally depleting and where we get to save some of our best energy for ourselves. So have a think on this one, have a good one, and remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter. I'll see you tomorrow.

1419: The long-term pay off of the boring bits

If you need a reason and a nudge to do the seriously boring and annoying shit, today we're talking about the serious pay off!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. It is the end of the week, it is nearly the weekend and we bloody well made it. So. Two things I really value in my life are joy, joy and freedom. When it comes to joy, I love the little things. I really, really thrive on novelty and I usually get through boring shit by setting myself challenges and trying to make it a bit fun. And with the freedom part of things, I hate being told what to do and I really, really need flexibility. So when it comes to things like boring self care tasks, unless I've got a lot of energy to make them fun, I tend to struggle.

I find them boring, I find them a chore and often they feel like they work in direct opposition to my love of fun and freedom. But today I thought I'd share with you something I've been thinking about that flips that on its head and also makes it a bit easier. And that is by doing the boring shit, generally speaking, I increase my capacity to to have more fun and to have more freedom. For example, I am a night owl. I go through phases when I am excellent at revenge bedtime procrastination and I stay up way too late in the name of having gone down a really good rabbit hole and refusing to have a self imposed bedtime. But what I can tell you is after a couple of days I start remembering why the boring shit exists in the first place. Because the next day I do not have a huge amount of capacity or inclination for fun because I'm too fucking tired. And if anything I have less freedom because I am more limited in what I can do because I feel exhausted.

And I know I'm not alone in convincing myself that the boring stuff is just really tedious and annoying, which it is, and forgetting that it's actually important until I'm really feeling it. So this Friday's pep talk is a boring one, but an important one. And it is a firm but compassionate kick up the bum to do the boring shit that does make a difference and gives you more capacity to have more of what you want. That could look like what I'm planning on doing, which is getting a really decent night's sleep. That could also be picking up or putting a request in for repeat medication. It could be making that important appointment or taking a tiny step into figuring out something that's really been bothering you. I know for so many of us these are heavy lifts. We have a massive amount of resistance to doing them and they don't feel like they feed us in any way.

But sometimes there is a very real and very positive payoff. It might just come a little bit later and we've got to give ourselves some of that care that we so freely give to other people. So take this episode as your sign to go do the thing. Chances are it may actually be way less of a big deal and way less of a time suck than you thought it would be. If you're rewards motivated try and mix it with doing something nice and remember that as much as we wish they weren't, the boring bits are also part of building a sustainable life that you love and they often free up your brain and give you more capacity to enjoy the things you enjoy in the long term. So go do the thing. I can't wait to see you in your inbox on Sunday if you're signed up to my fabulous email community or back in your ears on Monday as always to help you start the day with a compassionate bang.

1417: A different way to think about your comfort zone

If you've been around here a while, you'll know I'm not a fan of getting out of your comfort zone just for the sake of it. So for today's episode I'm throwing in an unconventional twist.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. Now, if you've been around here a while, it'll come as no surprise that I'm not a huge fan of that saying, life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. I think getting out of our comfort zones every now and again is important, but not because it somehow gives you moral brownie points or means you're living your best life, but for a different reason. I'm going to share an example in a minute can be a great way of surprising yourself. So when we tend to think of getting outside of our comfort zone, we tend to think about taking big, huge scary leaps. And some people do thrive on adrenaline. I just know that I'm definitely not one of them. But I think we can go out of our comfort zone in little ways.

Not to prove anything to other people or for ourselves, but to make life a bit more interesting, to add a bit of novelty into our everyday and open the world up a little bit. And I'm talking about things like trying a new TV show that you maybe think you wouldn't enjoy, maybe reading something outside of your favorite genre, maybe looking at something to do in your local area that slightly piques your interest or you never knew was there. For me, while I know I absolutely don't thrive on adrenaline, I do thrive on novelty. And I think new experiences, even tiny little ones and tiny changes, can really help our creative processes. It can help us be more in the moment and it can also be a way of finding out more about ourselves. So today I want to say fuck the comfort zone for the sake of getting out of your comfort zone and try some experiments. You might find something that you probably didn't think that you were absolutely gonna love. It might give you a renewed sense of appreciation of the familiar and the things that you already know you adore or.

Or somewhere wild and unexpected and in between. I truly believe that life is one big experiment. And it is often the tiny, tiny things that we try out that make the biggest difference. So here's to using our comfort zone as a tool for discovery and self exploration rather than a way to scare ourselves shitless and do things because we think we should do them. Have a think about what your tiny thing could be. Have a good one and happy hump day.

1416: For when life is life-ing

Today we're retuning with one of my favourite metaphors as well as one of my favourite sayings, and taking the blame off our own shoulders.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So today I thought I'd share a metaphor that I know I've shared before on the daily prep, but it's definitely one that's worth revisiting and it can be a really helpful reframe. And it's this idea of having an overloaded suitcase. Sometimes in life we just have a lot going on and our suitcase is overflowing and our first instinct is to try and repack things to make everything fit. When that doesn't work, we might try sitting on the suitcase and trying to do it up. But then we worry about the zip breaking because this fucker is not closing. We may try rolling the clothes instead of folding the clothes, and we try every which way, but the suitcase just won't close. Now, so much around us tells us to optimize and to maximize, but the truth is that sometimes our suitcases are simply overflowing.

And not even the most expensive packing cubes in the world could solve that issue. But my goodness, do we throw everything at it. We, we convince ourselves that we must be doing something wrong and there is simply something that we missed. And let's face can be really shitty to realize that we've got an overflowing suitcase. But to go back to a quote I've shared before on the daily Prep from Emily McDowell, what if it's not a personal failure, but an impossible setup? So often when things aren't going right, the first thing we do is blame ourselves and we figure that we've done something wrong and we go into fix it mode. But sometimes you just dealt a really bad hand or you have one of those seasons which is just like that suitcase overflowing. And the best you can do is try and figure out what's the most important things, try and remove the extra shit where you can and simply survive. That is not you doing anything wrong.

That is not you not optimizing. That is you dealing with this one wild and precious and fucking messy life. Oftentimes our want and our search for these perfect packing cubes that are going to solve everything is a way of gaining some control on what can be an unruly situation. But it can also distract you from having compassion for yourself right here and right now. So if you are in a season of life where your suitcase is overflowing and no matter how much you try and reorganize it, that fucker is not closing. Remember that everything is temporary, that it might just be an impossible setup. And it is probably definitely not a personal failure. And maybe you've optimised every which way you can already.

You're doing so much better than you think. And only in hindsight will you realize that you were doing the best that you could and that that is enough. Being a human can be messy. It can be complicated. It can be really fucking painful. And that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. And if there's one piece of advice that I'd like to leave you with today, it's to see if you can try not beating yourself up for beating yourself up. We don't need the extra layers.

The suitcase is heavy enough already. And you really, really are doing better than you think. However, this Tuesday finds you. I hope you find a pocket of unexpected joy today and you remember that everything changes when you believe you.

1415: Celebrating our multipassionate selves

Today we're doing something a bit different, and we're celebrating our multipassionate selves and national ampersand day!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you and also a very happy international Ampersand day to you. Now if it is way too early in the morning or you're just less of a nerd than I am, then an ampersand is that fun, squiggly symbol that represents the word and or it can sometimes be used instead of the plus symbol. Now the reason why this is relevant today is I thought it was a great way to start off the day celebrating our multi passionate selves. Because around here we are not just one thing. We contain so many multitudes, we, we wear so many hats. And in a world that tends to put specialists on a pedestal, it can be so hard to remember that there are so many fabulous things about being a generalist or a multi passionate, a multi potentialite, a renaissance person and a polymath. The way I see it, life is way too short to just be one thing. And there are also so many, many different things to dive into and get curious about.

And for many of us, we are simply lifelong learners and we are interested in so many things and we have seasons of going down different rabbit holes and I think that is one hell of a superpower. It makes us great at problem solving, it gives our lives so much meaning. And it also means that we don't have to choose one thing and we can build our lives and our world around the things that matter to us most. Sometimes it does mean that our lives don't follow a linear path that on paper our lives look pretty chaotic and hard to explain and we can't really be put in a box. But around here, I think we're all firmly in the fuck the box brigade. Anyway, so here's to celebrating your multi passionate nature today. To knowing that you never have to just be one thing. And remembering that there are always more things to explore.

Even though our inner dream shitter and perhaps our external dream shitters can give us a hard time about being flaky or going through phases, I honestly believe it is one of our greatest strengths. For me, it shows a passion for life, a curiosity that will send us a long way, and a true gift in the unique ways we see the world. So happy Ampersand day and here's to, in the words of Barbara Sher, refusing to choose, I'll see you tomorrow.

1412: Let’s go down the rabbit holes

Today’s episode is a permission slip to reclaim your time, and focus on curiosity, not optimisation.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday and a very happy hump day to you. Now, if you've been around the past week or so, you'll know that I'm right in the middle of launching the final ever round of One Woman Bang Club. As it is very much on my mind today, I thought I'd share with you what we do in one One Band club on a Wednesday and a couple of takeaways that you can apply to your own life. So on Wednesday we do deep dive co working. It is an opportunity to really take a decent chunk of time and work on something that we've been wanting to work on for a while. To really get into the nitty gritty of something and maybe fall down a rabbit hole or two. And the thing is, this can feel radical, maybe luxurious, and even a huge privilege in modern life. We all have so much stuff to do.

Our to do lists don't really end. And if your inner dream shitter is anything like mine, you are always aware of what you haven't done, especially when you try to do something for you. But here's what I also know. I also know that there are some pockets of time during the week that if I did want to use them to go down a rabbit hole, I could. But usually I end up just picking up my phone, scrolling, coming back out and wondering where time has gone. Now please know I am not judging myself or you for this. Sometimes our brain just needs a bit of a holiday and we need a bit of decompression time and our phones can be fabulous at that. But I do think there is some time that we can steal back.

I also want to acknowledge that this isn't going to be the case for everybody. We've all got wildly different lives, wildly different circumstances, and for many, many different reasons. This is going to be more of a possibility to some than it is for others. So I think we might have to be a bit creative with this. And I know that that can suck because for many of us, we're sick of having to come up with innovative, creative solutions for so many things. But even if you do it in the tiniest slithers of time, I want to remind you that going down rabbit holes is worth it around here. We are lifelong learners. We have an insatiable sense of curiosity about the world and you get to feed that.

You get to take yourself out of your life for a little bit and you get to do things just because sometimes you do need that big chunk of time to work through something or to really make progress on something that's been sat there for a while. And I really want to encourage you to ask for help with carving out that time because it really matters and you matter so much of the time. Especially for those of us socialized as women, if we're saving time in one particular area, we automatically try to optimise and maximize that time and replace it with something else. And I just want to remind you that you are also able to take that time to fill your cup, especially if it feels uncomfortable. And I have definitely learned the hard way that often the time we most need to take a break is the time we feel less able to. So here's to filling our cups, here's to rabbit holes, and here's to stealing back our time for ourselves. And finally, a quick, friendly reminder that if you're planning on joining one woman band, now really is the time. We get started tomorrow.

I am so excited and I'd love to see you there if it feels right for you. Have a fabulous hump day and I'll see you tomorrow.

1411: Let's choose your word!

Today we’re playing with the idea of setting an anchor for the rest of the year!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So I'm getting ready to kick off the final ever round of my hundred day group program, One More Band Club. And today I thought it'd be fun to share something we do during the kickoff call, which is just really good at helping find some clarity, figuring out what we need, and giving ourselves a bit of an anchor to come back to. And what we do is we Choose a word for the hundred days. I know for lots of us, we're familiar with choosing a word for the year, and I've also found it can just be really helpful for other seasons, projects and time containers. It's really powerful because it gets to the root of what you really want. It can be used as a bit of a filter to make decisions through, and it can also be a way of dividing our word of the year into stages or seasons. So at the time this episode goes live, we're at the start of September.

So I want you to think about the next hundred days, which takes us to a week or so before Christmas. And I want you to think about how you would like to feel by that time. Are there any things or any projects that you'd like to start or finish or carry on with that you would feel really grateful you showed up for? Is there something that you really want to focus on, but it just keeps slipping away amidst all the things we have to do during our daily lives? Or has a random word just popped into your head? I always say if you've got a random word, see if you can embrace the adventure and go for it, even if it doesn't make sense, because it can end up unexpected in a really good way. And it's a great way of connecting to our intuition. If on the flip side, you're trying to choose from a bunch of words, remember there's no perfect way to do this. You're not looking for just the right word. Pick the one that maybe gives you the most joy you're most intrigued about, or maybe feels like a bit of a weight off your shoulders. It is so easy to go into the later half of the year and feel completely swamped by all the things that we said we'd do.

But you get to make up the rules. January, you had the best intentions, but they didn't necessarily have the full picture. So give yourself grace and see if you can have fun with this one. It also doesn't just have to be a word. It could be a phrase, it could be a particular tarot card, it could be an animal. Go as wild as you like with this one and just see where it takes you. So here's to a fabulous next 100 days. If you're joining the final round of One Woman Band, I look forward to being with you every step of the way.

And whatever kind of day you've got ahead of you. Remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. I'll see you tomorrow.

1410: A slightly different question for a Monday

So often Monday comes around before we even know it. So today's episode is an invitation to take a pause, check-in with yourself, and face the week ahead.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So when it comes to Mondays, a lot of us start off by trying to figure out what we need to do. And today I want to make a slight tweak to that question in the hopes of helping make your week a bit more fulfilling. And so it aligns with the season of life you're in right now. So we're going to tweak that question to simply, what do you need this week? Now, before we get into how we do that, I want to acknowledge the elephant in the room. That is for so many of us. We can't just kind of say fuck it and throw all of our plans to the wind and just do what we need. We have obligations, we have commitments.

There are things that we have to do, and I really want to acknowledge them. But I do think that there's a way that we can meet ourselves in the middle and look at what's on our plate this week and look at what our needs are and find a way to make our week work a bit better for us. So often a Monday arrives a lot quicker than we'd like it to, and before we know it, we're just in it. And we haven't really given ourselves a second to just check in with ourselves and see how we are, what our capacity is like and how we're doing. So I invite you to have a bit of a check in with yourself right now if you're feeling exhausted and in need of a bit of recovery. Maybe it's about seeing what can be rescheduled in the calendar or how you can give 20% less effort this week. If your social battery is feeling absolutely drained and you need some alone time, look at where you can steal those moments for yourself. And if it feels like you've got so much to catch up on, pause before you start and figure out what is really important.

And acknowledge that it might take you a bit of time to catch up. And that is okay. We can only do so much in a day. And also, if our head's not been in it for a while, it does take time to get there, and that's just a human thing. So see how you can meet where you actually are this week before you jump into trying to do everything. Yes, there are things that you need to do this week, but you are also a human with needs. And there are so many little things that we can do so one doesn't bulldoze the other. Your needs are valid.

You don't have to justify them to anybody else. And if you've woken up today with less energy or less fucks than you wish you had, go 20% more gentler than you usually would and see what happens. Have a good one. And I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. Take care.

1407: Get back on the horse!

Today's Daily Pep! is your nudge to get back on the horse!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday. And a very happy hump day to you. So at the beginning of the week, it had been around three weeks since I've recorded a new episode of the Daily Pep, and despite doing it for five years, I was still nervous to go back to it because I thought I might have completely forgotten what I was doing and maybe I just wouldn't be able to do it. And I know I am not alone in this. In terms of so many of us have taken a break from things and the idea of getting back to it feels so impossible and we wonder if we've just lost it when in reality we do the thing and it is just like riding a bike very often. I mean, not in all cases, but in a lot of cases, thinking about doing the thing is so much worse than actually doing it, especially if we've done it before. So many of us completely discount muscle memory and we also disregard our experiences because we focused on the times that we didn't do it versus the many times that we've shown up. And if you're listening to this, as somebody who's thinking of starting doing something for the very first time, I really encourage you to see it as an experiment.

And rather than thinking about whether you're going to be good at it, test it out and see if you enjoy it first. So much of the time, we completely leave joy out of the measures of our success. But actually enjoying what you do is pretty damn important. So if there's something that you haven't done for a while, whether that is because of circumstances or because of choice, and you want to get back to it, but it's feeling a bit scary. This is your sign to get back on the horse and remember that you don't have to come out swinging with some massive race. You can just trot around the stables a bit, get yourself familiar and see what it feels like. Our inner dream shitters can often have an absolute field day when it comes to returning to something. And as we know, our inner dream shitter is full of shit and will come up with so many reasons to stop you from doing the thing.

But our inner dream shitters are also full of horseshit. They will say whatever they need to to stop us from doing the thing. They are absolutely not afraid to go for the jugular. But that certainly doesn't mean that all of this is true. The reality is, when I went back to recording the Daily Pet this week with my dream shitter screaming at me that I didn't know what I was doing and it would be awful and I'd forgotten everything. Although I had to coax myself a little bit, as soon as I plugged the microphone in and opened the software and press record, I remembered that this is something I just do. Yes, I was a bit resty. Yes, it took a little bit of time to get back into the flow of things, but muscle memory kicked in and the doing was so much less scary than the thinking about doing had been.

So come join me in getting back on the horse. You can do it. Your inner dream shitter is a liar. And start with a stroll rather than a massive sprint and you might just remember the joy of why you do this in the first place. Go give it a go. And remember, as always, that everything changes when you believe you better.

1406: Fairy lights and non-negotiables

Today's episode is all about embracing our quirks and our needs, and letting go of other people's judgements.

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So, as I shared in yesterday's episode, we are back to long term travel. And as of yesterday, we have checked into our Airbnb in a little city south of Frankfurt, Germany for just over two months. And it just feels really good to settle somewhere for a little while. Last time we did this, we spent a month in each place, and while I loved it, I had serious FOMO wherever we went, because I felt like I had to make the most of every minute and every day and cram in as much as I could into that month. So, as I was unpacking my suitcase, I. I came across some of my trusty favourites. And those are my sets of micro fairy lights I always take with us, despite having very little luggage that we can fit in our car.

And for me, it's my piece of home. Fairy lights make everything feel a lot more magical and I always find somewhere to put them. I am definitely not a main light kind of person, and many of the Airbnb we've stayed in have, shall I say, interesting lighting choices. And it's a way that I can feel comfortable and I can feel like me in a new space. And the reason I'm sharing this today is that I think we've all got different things that other people might see as added extras or even just something extra and ottoman that just really makes sense to us. And I think life just gets better when we can stop giving a shit about what other people might think about those things, or stop trying to rationalize them, or explain ourselves to ourselves. We've all got little quirks and little nuances and things that we need, whether that's with a capital N or a lowercase N that make us feel more comfortable and maybe make life a little bit more joyful. And I think that's a really good thing.

Now, I'm not saying it's easy to stop giving a shit what other people think, but the truth is, when it comes to these things that matter a lot to us, other people may think very, very little about them in the first place. So today, I'm encouraging both of us to be a lot more unapologetic about what lights us up and what we need. Sometimes I laugh at myself and think it's a bit ridiculous that I travel with three sets of fairy lights. But what I can tell you is, every single time I untangle them, I never regret bringing them. And also, untangling those fuckers can be a real stress reliever too. So, as you listen to this. Have a bit of a think about anything that you might not be allowing yourself to enjoy or allowing yourself to do. What are your non negotiables that make sense to nobody else, but that make you feel really comfortable and what would happen if you just accepted them rather than judging yourself? Here's to the power of knowing who we are, what we need, and giving it to ourselves and knowing that that isn't frivolous, but is actually pretty necessary for us to be comfortable and to keep showing up. Because the world certainly is a brighter place when you show up. Have a good one and I'll see you tomorrow.

1405: Perfectionism meets Summer funk

Sometimes we can put all the pressure on Summer to meet all of our needs and tick all of the boxes. If you're coming to the end of the season feeling a bit disappointed, this one's for you!

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Monday to you. It is so lovely to be back after taking a couple of weeks break while we return to long term travel. It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks and I am now recording this in my Airbnb in Strasbourg, France. Now, the summer is a bit of a weird one, isn't it? I think we can have all these plans and plan to take a bit of a break and have a bit of a rest and sometimes we kind of end it exhausted. I know that I wish I was coming back with so much more energy. I had so many grand plans for how I was gonna decompress and recharge. But it's just been a season of a lot of things going on. So for today's episode, I thought I would share with us all a reminder that it's okay if we don't feel balanced or we don't feel as rested as we wanted to, or things didn't turn out the way we wanted them to.

I think each new season brings so many possibilities as well as challenges and also pressure to make the most out of the season and make it the best one ever. And it's okay if it's not. For many of us, we are perfectionists and we are overachievers and we can apply that to our downtime as well. I know I certainly can. And I can tend to be pretty hard on myself if I haven't maximized or used my rest time as best as I would like. But sometimes, a bit like I said earlier, we just need to decompress and realize that not everything at every point has to be the most optimal and efficient thing it can be. So in the Northern Hemisphere, I wonder, as we're approaching summer, what would happen if we measured it by the unexpected joy that we had as opposed to the things that we did and the things we had every best intention to do but didn't get around to. What if you took a moment to log the things that made you smile, the things that made you feel calm, and the things that made you laugh, rather than the things that you can see on paper.

And if you're coming back from the summer with your cup half full, remember that not everything needs to be done right now. It will take you a minute to catch up. There are still many things to look forward to and you are so much further ahead than you think you are. So happy Monday, my loves. It is a joy to be back and I'll see you tomorrow.
