1180: Let's think about the long term
Something that's helped me in planning my own life, and a lot of the people I work with, is the idea of alternating calendars. That's what we're diving into on today's episode.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. It is a fresh new week and whether you're feeling it or you're feeling shit, which I hope you're not, the Daily Peppers here to help you start your week with a compassionate bang. Now I don't know about you, but I'm really good at looking at things short term. I find it second nature just to flip between projects and to look at what is the most urgent, and it can sometimes be really hard to look at the long term or the bigger picture. One of the things that I do that the most with is my calendar. I look at the week that I've got in front of me. I look at what feels good.
I look at anything that I might need to change, but most of all, I'm really good at filling it. And the thing that I don't tend to do, which I think all of us could do with doing more of, is looking at the week gone by and actually looking at whether our current week is doable when we take last week into account and also looking forward on the horizon. So to get us started this week, I really invite you to think about what you need long term. Have a look at your calendar from last week. Have a look at the weeks coming up, and really think about what you need to bear in mind. Something that I have seen be really helpful for a lot of my one to one clients is this idea of having a week a and a week b week. Week a is more of a beast mode week, and week b is more of a fluffy week that builds in time for recovery. And another way of doing this could be having week a as a extroverted week and then week b as a introverted week.
Now we all have wildly different calendars and wildly different levels of control over our calendars. So that might not work for you, but it might be worth thinking about, is there a way that you could adapt that? But, also, what does bigger picture you need from this week? So I invite you to think about that as we start this new week. Know that you are not behind in the grand scheme of things, that you are doing many things that past you is incredibly proud of, and that present you can also be a really big gift for future you. So happy Monday. Here's to looking at the big picture. Here's to recognizing what you need and giving it to yourself where you can, and to remembering, as always, that everything changes when you believe you matter. I'll see you tomorrow.

1179: You don't have to earn fun time
We’re wrapping up this week with a loving (and fun) challenge!
Episode transcript:
On a Friday, it's all too easy to think about what we need to get done and to try and wrap things up with a neat bow. But we know that it's rarely possible and sometimes we just have to say fuck it. Fuck it, you did your best. You got done what you got done and you get to have some fun. So my challenge for you today is this. See if you can find a way to make your Fridays more fun. This could be about adding a bit of a Friday fun tradition. This could be about expecting yourself to get less done on a Friday, or it could be making sure that every Friday, you plan something fun to look forward to on the weekend knowing that that doesn't have to be a huge thing.
It doesn't have to be an expensive thing, and that joy can often be found in the simplest things. Around here, we are really into personal development, into growing, into being the best that we can be, and into getting all the things done. But I think sometimes we forget, and I'm saying this absolutely from personal experience and as me right now, we forget that we also get to enjoy things. We get to do things for the fun of it. And not every moment has to be productive. And not every second of the day has to be a learning moment. So this Friday, I invite you to say fuck it. You don't have to be everything to everybody.
You don't have to do everything. And you are allowed to have days where you are not at your peak. You are a human being. You are definitely not a machine. And it's time to start treating ourselves a bit more human too. So see how you can add a bit more fun into today. See how you can let go and hold things a little bit more lightly, and see what you can check-in the fuck it bucket. You get to have fun and you get to enjoy things without having to earn them.
So that is my challenge for you today. It might be hard. I find it hard too and that's okay. Let's see how we can add the fun. Let's see how we can say fuck it, and happy Friday. I look forward to being back with you in your ears on Monday or in your inbox on Sunday if you're part of my letters of rebellion community. And if you wanna find out more about what that is and join the fun over there, you can do that by going over to therebelrousers.com/letters. Have a good one and I'll see you soon.

1177: You are growing (whether you feel like it or not)
Happy hump day! Today we’re giving ourselves a midweek boost, and a loving reminder on our growth.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. It is hump day. Sometimes we struggle with a bit of motivation and inspiration during the middle of the week. And that is exactly for what today's episode is for. To give you a bit of a boost and to remind you the things that are true that you might not see. So today I want to talk a bit about evolving. Now if you see somebody every single day, you don't tend to notice the changes that might be really obvious if for example, you haven't seen them in a couple of years. That could include physical attributes.
It could include different strengths and different ways you're seeing them growing. But if you tend to see somebody every day, those things aren't really immediately obvious. And the same is true for ourselves. If we look at a picture of ourselves 10 years ago, we're probably gonna notice a lot of changes. But day to day, we don't tend to notice that much because we are so close to ourselves, and that counts for the ways we're growing as well. Change is often gradual, is often a lot slower than we'd like, but it doesn't mean it's not happening. We tend to see growth as this idea of having huge epiphanies. And if it was a graph, there'd be huge spikes.
But the reality is a lot different. But because we can't necessarily see the gradual growth, it can be really easy to believe that we're not growing. A fun way of looking at this could be to look at your life right now. Think about you from last year, and think about what doesn't feel so hard anymore. Think about the different things that you've done, the different skills that you've grown, and the different ways you're able to react to something differently. Personal growth is a bit of a funny fucker because it can feel like unless we are this future idealized version of ourselves, we're not doing it right. And along the way, we really do discount all of the huge things that have changed. Our brains have a built in negativity bias and a confirmation bias, so chances are, as you listen to this, all you can think about is the things that you said you'd do or wanted to do that you haven't.
But look at the things that weren't even on the plan that you've done. And for those things that you haven't done, think what the very easiest and simplest first step would be, and know that that takes a shitload of courage. If you think about somebody who really wants to learn to swim, when they've been swimming for 5 years and they are regularly beating their personal best, that is technically harder. But actually, the hardest thing is opening the door and getting in the pool that first time. So keep that in mind. Try and be a bit kinder to yourself today about what you have actually done. Know that you do have a shitload of courage and that you are growing even if you can't see it. Have a good hump day, I hope you find some unexpected joy. We are so close to Friday. And as always remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1176: You can do it, part 2
We can often be haunted by the ghosts of projects past, and create stories to trick ourselves into thinking we’re people who don’t get things done. But we are!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So yesterday we kicked off the week with a reminder that you can do it and that you do have your own back. And today I kind of want to do part 2. And I want to remind you that you are somebody that shows up. As multi passionates, sometimes we look at our lives and all we can see are the unfinished projects, the things we haven't finished, or the things we have yet to do. And we completely disregard this notion that we are people who show up, but you really are truly somebody who shows up. You are here right now as you are every day, and you are doing the things. The thing is success looks different every single day.
So you might have had a beast mode yesterday. So today is a fluffy day, but one doesn't undermine the other. Showing up is over half the battle no matter how cheesy that sounds, and you do show up. And give yourself grace for the times that you don't show up in the ways that you might want to be showing up. And also bear in mind that in the nicest possible way, and I'm including myself in this too, we are probably one of the worst people we could choose to show ourselves just how much we do show up because we tend to concentrate on when we don't. And we create huge honking, untrue stories about the type of person that we are. And it is all too easy to buy into the version of us that our dream shitter would paint. So if you can't say it to yourself, take it from me.
You are somebody who shows up. You show up fully to your life even when it's hard. You keep going. You keep trying, and you're doing your best. Your best is different on different days. So however this episode finds you, give yourself a bit of a break. Think about what you would say to a dear friend or loved one, and give that gift to yourself instead. Keep going, take a break when you need to, and remembering that struggling doesn't mean failure, it simply means that you are human.
Have a fabulous Tuesday and I can't wait to see you tomorrow.

1175: You can do it, part 1
We’re kicking this week off on The Daily Pep! with an important reminder.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday for you. So, I wanted to kick off this fresh new week with a boost of motivation. And to remind you that you are doing the things, you are getting there, and you have done more than you think you have. It is so easy to look forward and see what we haven't done and beat ourselves up about the things that didn't go perfectly right. But let's also make space to celebrate the things that weren't even on your plan, that you didn't know that you didn't know, that you have absolutely smashed, my dear. All too often, we look outside of ourselves for motivation and we forget that we ourselves are pretty fucking badass. We have done a whole shitload of things, whether we can remember them or recall them right now.
And we've also all done a shitload of brave things. So go into this week knowing that you, my dear, you have your own back. You can do the hard scary things and you also get to experience the joy as well. Not everything goes according to plan and sometimes that is the best possible thing that could happen. So see if you can find some magic in the mistakes. Look to yourself for inspiration and know that you really are going into this week further ahead than you think you are. And something I have to regularly remind myself is that when you're doing the brave, hard, scary things, they very rarely feel like you're being courageous. So maybe if you're feeling wobbly, take this as a sign of strength.
So keep going, you can do it, and be on your own damn team. I'll see you tomorrow.

1174: On finding your wins, and arbitrary goals
Today I’m talking about how freezing my tits off taught me to rethink what can sometimes be arbitrary goals!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. You, my dear, have made it. And to wrap up this week on the daily pet, I wanted to share a realization I've had this week that I think you might be able to relate to. So, one of my goals right now is to move my body more. And it is all too easy to get into tracking things. Now trackers can often be really helpful, and sometimes they can be pretty unhelpful. I know with my Fitbit, if I concentrate too much on the sleep tracking, I get myself really wound up about it and that doesn't help.
But I do find the step counter pretty helpful. But I do think we have to be really careful in actually when we don't meet our exact goals. And this is what reminded me of this this week. So it was 11:30 at night and I was taking my dog, Merlin, out for his late night wee. And I realized that I was on about 9,200 steps. Now I am not trying to get to 10,000 steps a day right now, but any day that I can, it feels good. So it's pretty late at night. I'm freezing my tits off, and I'm trying to figure out, okay, do I try and just leg it around for 20 minutes and get those extra steps, or do I just count today as a win? And as I was thinking about it, I was thinking how ridiculous it would be to force myself to essentially walk around in circles at half 11 at night just to reach that elusive 10,000 number when, ultimately, it didn't matter, and 10,000 is pretty arbitrary.
And it got me to thinking about how much we beat ourselves when we don't reach our exact target and completely fail to see just how far we have got. Because the difference between me doing 9,100 steps and 10000 steps that day, who really gives a fuck? It doesn't make that much of a difference. Yet our dream shitter can really use it as evidence to show that we're not doing enough and we're not committing to our goals seriously enough. So for this Friday, I just wanna say a huge fuck it. You are doing the thing even if you are not doing it perfectly. Watch out for the arbitrary goals which completely dismiss the wins that you're already doing. And here's to also giving yourself a bit of a break. Whatever goals we've got in life, whatever we're working towards, we're not working towards that in a silo.
And by that, I mean, we have a shit ton of other things going on in every aspect of our lives, yet so much of the time, we barely take that into account when we're wondering why things are harder than we thought they would be or we're not doing it perfectly. So fuck perfect. Keep going. You are doing good enough. And here's to doing something for yourself this weekend. Not because you deserve it, because fuck having to deserve doing things for ourselves, but because I'm pretty sure you need it. So happy Friday. Have a good one. And here's to the 9,100 being enough.

1172: A Wednesday invitation
If you’ve been feeling like things could do with a bit of a shake up lately, then today’s episode is for you.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. You are doing so much better than you think you are. And if that's exactly what you needed to hear today, stop the podcast off your puck and have a good one. So. So I've been doing a lot more walking lately, and with walking comes also a lot more thinking. And I was thinking yesterday how when it comes to trying new things and getting curious and experimenting, one of the things that can trip us up is this idea that if we do something different, it has to be better. But what if we just aimed for different rather than trying to constantly improve things or feeling like it's either going to go right or it's going to go wrong? What if we tried different things just to see how they landed? Because different can just be different. It doesn't have to be some kind of moral success or moral failure.
And I don't know about you, but I find it all too easy to get lost in the humdrum of life. It's easy for days to feel sameish, and it's easy to feel that we're on a hamster wheel. And sometimes we just need to try something new. So my challenge for you today as you go about your daily life, is to do one little thing differently. Try not to go at it from the perspective of trying to find a really good alternative, but just try something in a different or a novel way. It doesn't have to become a replacement. You don't ever have to do it again. Just shake things up a bit.
There's all kinds of research that shows that we have thousands of thoughts every single day, and a lot of them are the same things. So see if you can challenge that today. Remember, you don't have to do something wild. You don't have to do something outside of your comfort zone. Just look for the opportunity. And I think you might be surprised. I love hearing from you. So if you fancy sharing your experiment with me, I'd love to hear how it goes.
You can email me at meg[at]therebelhousers.com I'd love to hear how you get on. And regardless of what you do today and how you feel today, remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

1171: 3 tips for hardcore resistance
If the resistance is real for getting things done, then today’s episode is for you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So yesterday, we kicked off the daily pep talking about just doing the thing. How we often spend more time thinking about doing the thing when we actually do doing the thing. And how we can create a bit of space for ourselves. And today, I just wanna speak to those things that you really, really don't wanna get done, which you're not getting done no matter how hard you try, and the resistance is really real. So I've got three things you might wanna try if that is the case for you, and I know it's often the case for me. So number 1 is to check whether it's still even relevant.
Has it been kicking about on your to do list for absolute weeks, maybe even months? And maybe, actually, the time has passed and you just need to let it go. If that is the case, give yourself grace. Let it go. Know that this is not a personal failing, and this is not a reflection on you as a human. It is just something on your to do list, and that absolutely does not get to define your self worth. The second thing is how can you make it even smaller? Martha Beck has this great quote, which I'm absolutely gonna butcher, which goes something like, if you're not taking the next step, the next step is too big. So go back to it and see how you can make it even smaller. Don't judge yourself if you feel that it is tiny already.
Let's go for the smallest, smallest, smallest thing you can do, remembering that action often begets action. And then the third thing is to get somebody else involved. We all have different flavors of hard, and sometimes our own flavors of hard are other people's flavors of easy. It is okay to ask for help even if it is asking someone to sit on the phone with you while you start it. Or ask somebody to do it for you in exchange for doing something joyful for them. But also remember that it doesn't have to be transactional and that friends like to help friends. Remember there are other things that can help you feel less alone too. I personally find Reddit can be incredibly reassuring when I can't get myself to do something that feels pretty basic and I'm giving myself a really hard time.
When I realize there are other people going through it, it just takes a weight of shame off it. And if in doubt, tell yourself that you're practicing doing the thing rather than actually doing the thing. So here's to making our lives a bit easier. Here's to not beating ourselves up so much, for giving ourselves grace, and for knowing that you're not alone because you truly aren't. And I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes and it comes from Mary Anne Radmaccher and she says, 'Courage doesn't always rule. Sometimes courage is a little voice at the end of the day that says, I'll try again tomorrow. You've got this. You can do it. And see you bright and early as usual tomorrow morning.

1170: Let's just do the thing
We can give ourselves such a hard time NOT doing the thing, that we forget that DOING the thing is actually easier! So today we're doing the thing and giving ourselves some much-needed brain space!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. So to kick off this week's daily pep, I thought I'd start with a reminder that I'm pretty sure we all need to hear makes us often roll our eyes, but it's true nonetheless. And it's that thinking about doing the thing is often harder than actually doing the thing itself. I'm sure, like me, you've had many times where you've put things off for so long, absolutely dreading them. And then when you do it, you realize it wasn't actually as hard as you thought. It didn't take quite as long. And then you start beating yourself up about why it took you so damn long in the first place. So we're gonna escape the self berating and beating ourselves with a stick, and we're gonna try not to judge ourselves, and we're gonna try and just do the thing.
So much of the time when we're resisting doing the thing or not doing the thing, what we fail to think about is the freedom that we get back and the time that we get back once we've done it, and it is no longer living rent free in our minds. We've all been there where we're watching TV or doing something nice, actually enjoying ourselves, and then we have this nagging feeling the back of our head. We remember the thing that we're supposed to be doing, and it completely takes ourselves out of it. And then it becomes such a bigger thing than it actually is in the first place, and that just snowballs and snowballs. And if you're anything like me, you then try to desperately avoid doing the thing which in the moment you think is gonna make it better, but actually makes it so much worse. So if you've got something small that you've been putting off, today, let's just fucking do it. Our brains are busy enough. Our to do lists are busy enough without beating ourselves up over doing something that might not actually take that long.
Give yourself a juicy reward if you can for doing it. Try not to go down the rabbit hole of beating yourself up about why you haven't done it before, and let's just get it off your plate. Send the email, cancel the thing, open the post, whatever it is you've been resisting. And like John Acuff likes to say, give yourself the gift of done. So here's to just doing the thing. Here's to saying fuck it. And here's to giving yourself back some time, some space, and some freedom. We can do it. I'll see you tomorrow.

Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. So I figured we'd wrap up this week on The Daily Pep with a bit of a sassy one. And it is this. No matter what you decide to do with your life and no matter how you decide to spend your time, there are always gonna be people that have different ideas for you. There are also gonna be the people that you could do exactly what they say and what they recommend and what they do, and they would still have an issue with it. You can spend your life bending to what you think is the will of everybody around you and making them happy, and chances are it's not gonna make them happy, and it's certainly not gonna make yourself happy. So for today, I am recommending a huge dose of fuck it.
The Kacey Musgraves lyrics come to mind of you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't, so you might as well do whatever you want Seriously come to mind here. And I think if you don't wanna play the game and you can't win the game, you might as well make up your own with your own rules and do what works for you. And you might not know what works for you, and that's okay too because we're not really encouraged to find that out for ourselves. So much of the time, we are bombarded by what other people think we should do, what we think we should do, that we very rarely spend much time on the things that we could do. And I think we'd all be better off putting that energy that we put into pleasing everybody else into figuring out what we want and seeing how we can do that. Now I know we all have wildly different contexts, and we can't just up and do whatever the fuck we like all the time. I understand that. But how can we do things in the micro moments? How can we have the micro rebellions? And how can you say, fuck it? So that is my food for thought as we end this week.
As always, it's a joy to spend my days with you. I hope you find some unexpected joy this weekend. If you want more rebel rousing and you're not part of my letters of rebellion community, I'd love to see you there, and you can join them by going to therebelrousers.comforward/letters, where my aim really is to prove the point that building a life you love does take a shitload of courage and I share my own journey in doing that. But we don't have to do it alone. See you on Sunday for my letter of rebellion or back here bright and early on Monday. As always, here for the daily pep. Take care.

1167: It’s okay to change your mind
Today I’m sharing that I’m learning about changing your mind, and sunken cost fallacy.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Wednesday to you. So, at the moment I'm working with a health coach. And it is really, really helpful. And we end up going down different rabbit holes. And one of the things I'm really, really valuing is the ability to dig deep into something that I could try and actually decide that I don't wanna try it. I'm actually finding it really liberating because I think a combination of sunk cost fallacy in terms of you look into something for so long and then you feel like you've got to do it because you spent all that time doing it, and also the ability to say what I really mean. For those of us socialized as women, it can be really hard to take up space. It can be really hard to say what we actually want to say, not what we think other people wanna hear.
And I think generally as humans, we have this idea that once we make our mind up about something, that's it. We can't change our mind. Maybe we feel a bit embarrassed about going back on something. So for today's daily pep, I wanna remind you that it is a okay to change your mind. It's okay to change your mind about ideas, about things, about projects you've started, and also about people too. You don't have to be right all the time, and you won't be right all the time. And there is so much value in looking inwards and really listening even if what you find doesn't make sense on paper. I know for me in my health coaching journey, it has definitely been a lot of going down rabbit holes and finding things that just aren't for me.
It's making me realize that I really want long term sustainable strategies, and that does mean taking the longer way around, but that's okay. And the good eggs that you wanna keep around will be okay with that too. It's okay to admit what you don't know. It's okay to go partway down the path and then turn around. And it's not just okay, but highly recommended to look inwards and see what feels right for you. I don't know what you've got going on in your life right now, but I hope you needed to hear this today. Our lives are precious and you are precious my dear. So have a fabulous hump day and I can't wait to do that with you tomorrow and remember in the meantime that everything changes when you believe you matter. See you tomorrow.

1166: Let’s hear it for imperfect action
Sometimes the most counterintuitive things are the most helpful. Today I’m sharing something that’s been a big game changer for me!
Episode transcript:
Good morning daily Peppers and a very happy Tuesday to you. Before we kick off today's show, I wanted to let you know that my new course slash program, 100 days of Compassionate Productivity officially starts today. So if you've been meaning to join, now is the time. During the 100 days you'll learn and implement a kinder more sustainable and more effective approach to getting done working with your brain rather than against it. And it's a system that you can use over and over again that helps you to acknowledge your wins and inspire yourself. You can find out more by going to the rebel rousers.comforward/100 days. And that is 100 as in the numbers. And I've put the link below, and I would love to see you there.
Now on to today's show. So as you can imagine, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately about compassionate productivity. And today I wanted to remind you of one of the key tenets of it that I think can never be overstated and that's the idea of taking imperfect action. It can be all too easy to fall into the trap of trying to find the exact right first step to take. We can get lost in the research which, let's face it, feels productive and sometimes is productive, but sometimes we just need to rip the band aid off. I have this saying that it's a bit harsh, but it's still true, which is imperfect action is much better than perfect inaction. And it is something that I have to remind myself of really regularly because the truth is in most scenarios, there is no one perfect right step. And the thing that will most get you out of your creative resistance is doing the thing.
And I am a huge fan of doing things in the easiest and simplest way possible and wherever possible start with the fun thing and eat the dessert first. So whatever you've been thinking about whatever you've been researching a lot of that you've been putting off starting, or that thing that you're desperate to get back to but it feels really scary, start anywhere. Do it imperfectly knowing that perfect is an illusion and see what happens. Chances are, yes, it may be really scary, but it might also be a lot more fun than you think. It might add a hell of a lot to your life, and I think future you will be really glad you started. So here's to taking imperfect action. Here's to being gloriously and imperfectly human. And here's to remembering however counterintuitive it sounds.
You can get a shitload more done with compassion than you can without it. I'll see you tomorrow bright and early for another episode of the daily pep and maybe I'll catch it tonight's workshop if you sign up to the 100 days of compassionate productivity. And the link to do that is in the show notes. Take care.

1165: What do you need in this season?
It’s so good to be back! Today we’re diving into this next season, and the rest of the year.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Monday to you. It is so good to be back after the summer break. And I am so glad that it's September. I've had a whole lot of shit going on in my personal life. I've really needed the break. But I'm also feeling ready to embrace the season to get my head down a bit and also to get cozy. So as we enter into a new season, for today's daily pep, I just want to give you a bit of a chance to reflect on what this season looks like for you and what you need from it.
Sometimes it can feel like the period between September December is about just making it to the end of the year. But how can you make this time of the year count for yourself? And I don't just mean about getting shit done, but I mean more about you looking after yourself. It's been a long year for a lot of us. A lot of stuff has come up. So as we enter the new season, I simply invite you to think about what you need and how you can give it to yourself. And also think about what my fabulous friend, Michelle Roar, refers to as the minimum effective dose. We do not have to be perfectionists when it comes to looking after our needs, and rarely do we get the opportunity. But we do have the opportunity to do it imperfectly to give ourselves what we need, especially when we are usually so focused on other people.
So that is my food for thought for you for today. Have a think about what you need from this season and what this season of life looks like for you, what you can put on the back burner, and what really matters. And if you'd like to end these 100 days making significant progress but in a really compassionate way, then I want to do a quick shameless plug for my latest experiment, 100 days of compassionate productivity. It is part online course, part interactive program and part DIY adventure. And it's designed for anyone who's ready to find a new way of doing things with ease, joy and compassion, rather than the bullshit, the burnout and the hustle. And it is designed intentionally and specifically for those of us who really value flexibility and resist structure. We get started tomorrow. It is gonna be so much fun.
And if this has piqued your curiosity, you can find out more by going over to therebelrousers.com/100 days. That is 100 as in the numbers. And you can also find the link in the show notes and I think you're really gonna love it. So here's to a new season. Here's to getting back to it. And here's to knowing that imperfect action still absolutely fucking counts. I'll see you tomorrow.

021: The first pancake
As it turns out, pancakes are the perfect metaphor for our work, trying anything new, shitty first drafts and creativity in general.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, and a very happy Wednesday to you. You are listening to The Daily Pep, the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women who want a bit of morning rebel rising. So a couple of weeks ago, I listened to the final episode of the Good Company podcast with Grace Bonney. And, seriously, it was so good. During the episode, Grace shared her experience of choosing to close Design Sponge and what she's learned along the way. During the episode, she referred to the first pancake and how it relates to failure, and that's exactly what we're diving into today. You might be wondering what the hell even is the first pancake. So if you've ever made pancakes, you'll know that the first pancake always goes to shit.
Maybe the temperature is too high, maybe the mix was lumpy, maybe you use too much or too little, and basically it always burns. It's always wonky and something always goes wrong. And that is just part and parcel of making pancakes. The ones after that generally turn out pretty great, but that first pancake, well, it's nothing to write home about. But here's the deal, in order to have those other pancakes, you have to move past the first shitty pancake and just continue. You have to just get to the second pancake. And when you do that, not only do you, shock, horror, get to have pancakes, but you also realize that this is all just a part of the process. Ultimately, you have to make pancakes enough time to know that the first one's gonna be pretty shit, but it means, generally, the rest will work out okay.
And you only learn this when you've done this time and time again. You have to move past the failure and instead accept that the crap pancake is just part of the process. But you only learn this when you've made enough pancakes, or at the very least, you decide to carry on and you don't throw the pancake mix into the bin after the first one has failed. So as it turns out, pancakes are the perfect metaphor for our work, trying anything new, shitty first drafts, and just creativity in general. The thing is we get so caught up in making the first pancake the most wonderful, fluffy, cooked, perfect thing that ever existed that when it doesn't turn out right, we assume that we just can't do it. We think that our first drafts have to be the best thing ever. And so often, we give up at the first hurdle because it just didn't turn out how we envisioned it. What if you accepted your first pancake as carving the path of future great pancakes? What if you saw shitty first drafts as the first step on the path to doing work that you're proud of? And taking that a step further, what if you came to expect the first failed pancake as just part of the creative process? Just imagine for a second what this would do to your process, your body of work, and your ability to start and finish projects.
Now I don't know about you, but I would rather have a whole heap of failed pancakes and a mountain of second, third, and fourth pancakes than no pancakes at all. So dare to see past the first pancake. Dare to make the second and the third and the fourth. And dare to repeat the process time and time again because that's where your best creative work lies. If you are enjoying the daily pep, I would love it if you could go over to iTunes or upper podcast and give the podcast some love to help more women who need the podcast find it. So until tomorrow, have a wonderful day, and I'll see you back here bright and early.

1141: Taking our own advice
This week I'm sharing a reminder that I most need to hear, and permission to not know all the answers!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. Now, I know I'm not alone in this when I say I am not the best at following my own advice. You might have seen last week was full of reprises that was completely unintended, but I forgot to schedule myself for summer break. And as our bodies often do, it definitely let me know that I was due 1. So I'm popping in today to let you know that the daily prep is gonna take a little bit of a summer break, meaning the episodes are gonna be reprises. You'll still get an episode Monday to Friday as usual. And also to remind you that you get to take a break as well.
Before I was sitting down to record this episode, I was thinking, okay. When am I taking a break until? And the answer is I will be back with brand new episodes at the latest at the beginning of September. But until then, I'm gonna give myself permission to do what feels good. If I get inspired to record some of the episodes this week or next week, I'm absolutely gonna do that. But if I need a break, I'm gonna do that too. And that is my reminder for you today. You don't have to make all of the decisions right now, especially if, like me, you're feeling pretty bloody tired. It is okay to take things week by week, but the most important thing is that you listen to yourself.
Sometimes we do just need to put ourselves into maintenance mode, and that is not a reflection that we've been doing anything wrong. It might be a reflection that we've been pushing ourselves too hard, but my goodness, don't we all? It's so easy to fall into a shame spiral where we start feeling bad about feeling bad and my friends we are not gonna do that. We are gonna aim to look after ourselves unapologetically. We are gonna give ourselves grace when we don't take our own advice, and we're gonna give ourselves what we need. For many of us, that does feel really uncomfortable. And that also doesn't mean we're doing anything wrong. It's just that we're doing something that's pretty countercultural. Probably goes against a lot of the patterns and the things we were taught when we were growing up.
So it is no surprise that it feels like putting on a brand new pair of trainers where you get the rubbing as opposed to your super comfy slippers. I love that I get to start my day with you. I'm looking forward to sharing some favorite episodes over the next couple of weeks. Behind the scenes, for me, this month is all about filling my cup and doing creative things. I can't wait to share what I learn. I've got some really fun things up my sleeve, and I look forward to being back with more pep in my step. If you want to see what that process looks like in lifetime and you're not already part of my email community, I'd love to invite you to hang out over there. You can find out more by going to the therebelrousers.comforward/letters.
There's now a very fun GIF on there. And I wanna finish by saying I am so grateful to have you here, and I can't wait to be back. It really does feel like having a home to come back to and that means more than you know. Past Meg will see you bright and early as usual tomorrow morning. And from present Meg, remember that everything changes when you believe you matter, and I'll be taking that on board too.

1134: Give it five minutes
If like me you are a wizard at worrying, today we're exercising a different part of our brains and doing something different!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. Before we begin today's episode, I just wanted to start with a quick and friendly reminder that doors are closing to my 100 day group coaching program today. We get started in September. It is gonna be 100 fabulous days of being supported, finding new people, having me beside you as your coach to make shit happen and get shit done without treating yourself like shit too. You can find out more and book your spot by going to therebelrousers.com/onewomanband, and I would love to see you there. Like I said, doors close this evening. So if you've been thinking about it, now is the time. And if you're on the fence and not sure, send an email over to meg [at] therebelrousers.com. I promise to be honest there is no pressure or obligation and I'd love to help you decide.
Now on to today's show. So I know that I'm not the only one who worries a lot. Give me any situation and I can tell you a 100 things that could go wrong. It's a bit like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon. I think I'm only at any point 3 degrees away from figuring out how something could end in complete and utter catastrophe. And unfortunately, I know that I'm not alone in this. I know this is something that a lot of us struggle with. Now something that can be really helpful is setting yourself dedicated worry time.
It can be helpful to figure out a time of the day where you give yourself 5 to 10 minutes to write down all your worries, close the book, and that's it. That can be a really good container. But there's something else that we can do, which I think is a bit more radical, that could really help and also retrain our brain. And it is to take those 5 to 10 minutes worry time and to flip it on its head and spend it daydreaming and getting lost in what if it all went right. Now I find this really challenging for a number of reasons. I know it's magical thinking, but sometimes I worry that by getting lost in the fantasy, fantasy, I jinx it and make it less likely to happen. And sometimes it can almost feel painful to go there because then you realize how much you want something and how crushing the disappointment could be. But I think that makes this even more important.
We know that our brain has a built in negativity bias. We know that our dream shooter is ultimately trying to protect us, and we know that worrying can be a way of trying to control things that might not be controllable. But multiple things can also be true at once. Focusing on what could go right is a great exercise in creativity. It can bring us closer to realizing what we really, actually deep down want. It can also serve as a good source of motivation. And I also think it's more fucking fair. Why is it that we get to spend so much time in our brains worrying about all the things that go right which make us feel shit when we could spend a fraction of that time thinking about what would happen if it did go right and really enjoy it.
Now I know justice is a very shared common value between all of us. So if nothing else, do it for the sake of fairness. So if you take one thing away from today's daily pep, let it be this. If you're gonna spend time thinking about everything that could go wrong, it is only fair to daydream about what would happen if things go right. And I think what you might find in doing that is that your ideas get clearer and they get stronger, and life also becomes a bit more enjoyable. So try it on for size, exercise your brain in a different way, and see if you can do some daydreaming this weekend. To reference the title of one of Amber Rae's books, let's see if we can choose wonder over worry. Have a good one and I'll see you on Monday.

1132: A sassy one about dreamsh*tters
Today I'm sharing some helpful ways to deal with external dreamsh*tters, as well as a massive permission slip to only share what you want to share (with who you want to share it with!)
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Wednesday to you. It is a hump day, and I am feeling sassy. So if you are struggling with your inner dreamshitter or external dreamshitters and you wanna cut through the bullshit, this one is for you. Now, lately, I have been thinking about how much of our heart and soul that we put into so many of the things that we do that we're passionate about and the reactions of other people. The way I see it, you have a couple of different types of dream shitters. You've got your very much intentional dreamshitters who are only too happy, almost joyful, to tear your plans apart and tell you why they won't work. And they can range between people who are pretty passive aggressive and jealous and just outright bastards.
And then you've got your well intentioned dreamshitters. So the people who, maybe to varying degrees, really do support you and want what's best for you but have all the questions. They ask you, why can't you do it a different way? They're reminding you of the risks you're taking. They're giving you piece of advice that sound more like warnings from a well intentioned place, but they still do a lot of damage. And then we add to the mix our inner dreamshitters, which we know very, very well. And some of their favorite junk food is comprised of a lot of the stuff that is said to us or implied to us by external dream shutters. So first of all, let's just admit that is quite a lot. So the fact that we do anything is quite frankly a miracle.
And secondly, to dive into the meat of the episode, I just want to remind you that you do not have to share your heart and your soul and your ideas with anybody else. I'm a firm believer that people who get your respect have to earn your respect. That some people simply aren't worth wasting your precious air on, and that you get to be seriously fucking protective about the things that matter to you. And not everybody has access to them nor should have access to them. This is not about you being inauthentic. This is not about you lying or trying to hide things. It is about looking after you, standing up for you, and knowing that your ideas matter, you do have something to say, and you can do really cool shit in the world. You are allowed to have a vibrant internal life that you keep private.
You are allowed to answer dreamshittters with really vague answers, and you're also allowed to not answer them at all. You also get to be really intentional about who you choose to share things with and also how you share them. Maybe some people are really good with helping at relationship problems, but tend to really put a dumpster on your creative dreams and vice versa and that's okay too. This whole thing is really nuanced and it isn't always that straightforward. Again, that is a human thing that is not an error that you're making. And another thing to remember is that you get to answer to a question with, I'd rather not talk about that. You do not have to explain yourself and quite frankly a lot of people, especially our external dreamshitters, love any excuse to talk about themselves and so deflecting a conversation by asking them questions is usually a handy one. But you also get to simply walk away from the conversation as well.
We are already our own harshest critics, and we already give ourselves enough of a hard time that we don't need other people's bullshit either. We also don't need to rescue other people. We don't need to put up with their shit. And I really do get that sometimes it's not as simple as cutting somebody out of our life for so many reasons, but we get to take the power back and protect ourselves and keep ourselves safe in whatever ways we can. You are so much better and fucking brighter than you give yourself credit for. Go do your weird and wonderful things. Know that you are absolutely not alone, there is a whole crowd of us right behind you. And fuck dreamshitters. We're over halfway through the week. Keep going and I'll see you tomorrow.

1131: Follow the intuitive nudges
Sometimes we get a hankering to do something and have no idea why. In a world that values specialists over multi-passionates, it's so easy to dismiss these as another phase, but today I'm offering up an alternative perspective!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers. And a very happy Tuesday to you. So yesterday's episode of The Daily Pep was around checking in with your goals and your dreams and seeing if they still align with what you want, even if they don't make sense on paper, and even if it feels more like an intuitive nudge. And today, I really wanna dive into that concept of intuitive nudges. So we are multi passionate around here. We are endlessly curious. There are so many rabbit holes that we want to go down and we can get lost learning about so many different things. Curiosity and learning are truly 2 of our biggest superpowers.
Now there are so many fabulous things that come with being multi passionate, but one of the shitty things that comes with it is the way that the world often sees us. We've all heard that, quote, jack of all trades, master of none. And we know that the world tends to like people who niche themselves down, put themselves in a box, and specialize in one thing. And we tend to not be those people, and we give ourselves a hard time about it. So while we're giving ourselves a hard time about it, we tend to beat ourselves up about having shiny object syndrome, about chasing new ideas. And I think one of the things that that can result in is us ignoring our intuitive nudges. Now your intuitive nudge is when you feel like you have to follow a thread or go down a rabbit hole or something, but you don't know why. It might be that it's not related to anything you're doing, you're not sure where it fits into your life right now but you feel really cool to do it.
Now for me right now my intuitive nudges are around really funky modern embroidery. I have a nudge from a long time ago that keeps emerging about spoken word poetry and I also have some hardcore nudges around collage and going back to polymer clay earrings. Now on the one hand it is really easy for me to dismiss those things as yet another thing to get involved in and yet another thing to do and I can easily rationalize them away by telling myself and reminding myself that I'm already pretty busy and my energy is already pretty low. And there would definitely be some truth in that. But also, if I completely just ignored it and just didn't give myself permission to go down those rabbit holes I think I would be missing out on some really magical things and things that could make my life a lot more fun and a lot more interesting. One of the things I often say to my coaching clients and also to 1 more banders is that when it comes to building a life you love, a lot of it looks like putting pieces of a puzzle together that nobody has given you the top of the lid for, so you don't know the image. And what that means is sometimes you genuinely don't know how a puzzle piece is gonna fit, but also like when you do a jigsaw puzzle, sometimes a whole load of pieces start coming together and you can actually start to work out the image and it gets quite exciting. And this is why I'm a huge fan of following your nudges because, a, I think our intuition has a lot to say to us and we have a lot of the answers inside us, and, b, we don't really know how much of an important piece that truly random idea could be.
It could be a massive piece of the puzzle. So today's episode is a rallying cry to follow those nudges even if they don't make sense and especially if they don't make sense. I know for me, it is only in the power of hindsight that I can realize, oh, wow. I wanted to do that thing. I had no idea why, but now I can see how it fits. And I'm also excited to see how things I've really loved in the past are gonna fit into my future. So here's to getting a little bit more comfortable with the fact that we can't see the image on top of the box yet, to having faith that there is an image and it will all come together, and to remembering that you can't do life wrong and knowing that there are no wrong paths. Have a good one. I will see you tomorrow. And as always, everything changes when you believe you matter.

1130: Do your dreams and goals still make sense for you?
It's so easy to chase goals you set a long time ago without checking if they're still aligned or if you still even want them. So today we're doing a quick check-in with your goals and dreams!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. Now for many of us at any one time, we have a set of goals or dreams that we are chasing. There are things that we want to do and maybe we've wanted to do them for quite a long time and maybe we have quite a few feelings about them as well. Now the thing about goals is that sometimes they sit on our list of things that we want to do for a long time without us really checking in on them. Our goals are set by our past selves. They're aligned with what we wanted in that season of our life. And while they may still absolutely be relevant, maybe some of them need updating or tweaking or simply letting go. So to kick off this week on The Daily Pep, I want you to think about the top couple of things that you really want to do and things that you are working towards in your life and check that they're still aligned with you.
Is this something you really want or is it something that you've got used to wanting? Does it still fit or have you outgrown it? Now this is not my attempt to convince you to change up your goal or to let it go. It is simply an invitation to just have a check-in. Chances are they may still be a really good fit and they may still be really aligned with who you are But on the off chance that one needs tweaking, let's just get a bit intentional because as multi passionates, there are so many things that we want to do during our lifetime. Let's just make sure that they're really aligned with what we want, not what other people want or what we think we should be doing rather than what we want to be doing. So that is my challenge for you as we start a brand new week. Know that if there are some things that you're letting go of or you don't want so much anymore and it feels uncomfortable, that's because it is uncomfortable. Use your curiosity. Know that it's not something you need to let go of or replace right now.
You've got time And remember that your dreams and your goals only have to make sense to you. It's okay if they don't make sense on paper. That probably means that you're getting a real intuitive nudge and other people don't have to agree with you. And while that can be really hard, it can also be okay. You've got this. Have a fabulous start to your Monday. And a quick reminder that doors close to September's round or One More Band Club on Friday. So if you're thinking of joining, I recommend doing it sooner rather than later. And either way, I hope you find some unexpected joy today. See you tomorrow.

1129: On having our own backs
It's so easy to have faith in others, yet so hard to have faith in ourselves. So grab a post-it-note, Monday you has some advice they need to hear!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. So this week on the daily pep, I've been sharing about the 5 most helpful things that I've learned about how to take your dreams off the someday pile and get out of your own way. And I wanna wrap up this week by really focusing on our own inner wisdom and how we can have our own back. So in One Woman Band Club on a Friday, we toot our own horns. I start off by asking everybody what their biggest horn toot from the week is, which is what the thing you're most proud of, and then we chat through how we got on with our priorities for the week. And then I get everybody to set themselves some Monday wisdom. Now not only is this a really nice way to end the week, it is designed with a lot of intention in mind based on the fact that as those of us socialize as women, we are not really encouraged to take up space and share about what we have done. We're taught that to do that is bragging, that is a negative thing, and we often downplay our achievements and what we've done and also completely fail to recognize the progress we make.
So by tooting our horns on a Friday, it is such a good way of building that muscle and taking up space. And every time I run 1 more band, I find something very similar happens. To start off with, it feels a bit uncomfortable finding something to toot your own horn about, especially with other people. But by the second or the third week, it is really hard to actually limit your horn to to one thing. I find that it goes from being this uncomfortable thing that we're socialized not to do to being something that people really look forward to. They have a list of their wins for the week, and life starts being a lot more fulfilling, a lot more satisfying, and we also start to enjoy our days more realizing that we do get shit done, that we are enough. And we also get so much better at realizing what is realistic and also kind to expect ourselves to do every week and just generally better at setting goals. So that is part of why I love the Friday and why I designed it the way I did, but the second bit is magical too.
So when we set our Monday Wisdom, we think ahead to the following Monday and think about what we're gonna most wanna hear. And the reason we do this in advance is because we tend to be a lot kinder to our future selves than we are to our present selves, and we also have a bit more objectivity. Monday seems quite a far way away, and we can really dive deep and we tend to know what we need to hear. We know what we need to give ourselves permission to do, and it is the ideal way of giving ourselves a pep talk because it is exactly what we need to hear. So often, it is all too easy to look outside of ourselves when we've had the answers all along. And it's also a pretty fucking powerful way of starting a Monday realizing how fucking wise you are. A lot of the time people are shocked by how wise their Friday sales were and how right they were. So give this a try yourself.
Press pause, find a post it note, and write yourself a Monday wisdom. Think about what Monday you really needs to hear or would be grateful to hear. Write it as if you are writing it to a dear friend, and then whip it out on Monday and see how right you were. The thing is a lot of this is unconventional and a lot of this is, by its nature, uncomfortable because it goes against so much of how we've been socialized as women and how typical productivity bullshit works. But I'm telling you, self kindness and accessing your own inner wisdom are 2 of the most helpful things that you can do to get your dreams off the Sunday power and to build a life that you love. And you are so much more capable than you know and so much of this starts with building that muscle. So try it on for size. Here's to getting shit done in a way that works with you rather than against you.
And a quick reminder before we end, the early bird offer ends today. So if you grab your spot by the end of the day, you also get a 1 to 1 coaching call with me where we work to get you unstuck, find momentum, a shitload more clarity, as well as a confidence and energy boost. You can save your spot for the September round of 1 woman band club by going to therebelrousers.com/onewomanband. I would love to see you there. And whether you're joining the September round or not, remember that there is an alternative way to work on and build your dreams in a way that is fun, that is compassionate, and doesn't involve you being so damn hard on yourselves. Have a fabulous weekend. I hope you find some unexpected joy and I'll see you on Monday.
