043: Rediscover the things you used to love

Have you ever started a project or working on a new idea you were excited about and your inner critic becomes deafening? We're diving into why in today's episode!

        Episode transcript:

Good morning. It is Friday. It's nearly the weekend, and we made it. So today, I wanna start this episode with a story. When I started school, I was obsessed with reading. I remember doing my reading homework with my mom every night, going way past the page I needed to read because I just needed to know what happened next. From memory, I vaguely remember a series about Meg the Hen, but I definitely know I was an overachiever. And then I remember every Saturday as a teenager taking a massive pile of books back to the library in town where the librarians knew me by name.

I was a proud nerd. But as I got older, I stopped reading so much. There were always more pressing things to do, and more importantly, I simply forgot how much I loved it. Because when we get older, our brains get bogged down with all the adult things we need to do. Time operates in a completely different way, and there's no one telling us to do the fun things or to make time for the things that we love. There's no one there making sure that they don't fall off the radar, and there's no one there to help you rediscover the things you once loved. There is no reading homework, and it is just so easy to simply stop doing the things that we were once obsessed with. So for today's episode, I want to be that person.

Take this as your friendly nudge, your reminder, and your homework to do the things that you love. This weekend, take some time to do the things that you don't make enough time for. Take some time to remember what you used to do and things that you forgot that you love doing that just don't happen anymore. Go read a book. Go get your paints out. Spend some time doodling or making books or whatever it is that you couldn't get enough of as a child. As adults, we simply don't play enough. We forget that play is so important until somebody reminds us.

So this is your reminder, and this is your permission slip. Go have fun. Go rediscover things that you just simply can't make time for or haven't made time for. And do it without guilt. Yes. You might have lots of things to do, but when don't you? The fact of the matter is as we started this week talking about to do lists, and our to do lists are very rarely empty. So you have to carve the time. So carve that time this weekend, go have fun, and I cannot wait to see you on Monday.

Have a fabulous weekend. Make time for you, and know that that definitely isn't selfish. Take care.

042: What would you be glad you did?

Regret can be a really helpful way of reflecting on our lives, but it can also make us feel pretty powerless. Today I'm sharing a brighter reframe to help you set your priorities and flip the script!

        Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Or a very happy not Thursday to you. I know that you're all pretty divided as some of you listen first thing in the morning, and some of you save the map for when you really need some motivation. So whatever day you're tuning in, I hope you're having a great day so far. I just wanna start the episode by thanking everybody who reached out to me yesterday about how you first heard about the daily pep. I am so happy to have you here and to help you get your day started with a compassionate bang. Now on to today's show. So regret is something we think about from time to time, whether it's looking back at things that have happened recently or imagining ourselves in our eighties nineties and looking back at our lives and how we used our time.

We also think about regret when we're setting goals. We often frame it in terms of thinking about the future and things we wish we had done. Now I think looking at life through the lens of regret can be helpful, but it can also leave us feeling pretty powerless. So today, I wanna offer a helpful reframe. It's a really minor change in language, but I think it's much brighter. It's more exciting, and it also puts you in charge. What if instead of asking yourself what you would regret, you asked yourself what you would be glad you did? What would you be grateful for? What's something that you would love to look back on and think, fuck yes. I did that.

Because it is so easy to look back and think about what you wish you'd done. And it is so easy and tempting to look back at the past with rosy tinted glasses and forget that the choices you made at the time were probably made from a place of giving it your best and doing what you thought was best for you at the time. As you're going about your day to day, just have a bit of a think on what things you'd be really glad you did. Not only is it a brighter way to look at things, I think it can be a really helpful tool to help you figure out what are your priorities right now, what are things that you would love to be working on, and what is really important in your life. So those are my 2 questions for today. What are the things that when you look back, you would be really glad you did? And what would you be really grateful to yourself for? Have a think, see what comes up. And if there's something that surprises you or just comes out of the blue, pay special attention to that because that might be a really important clue and now I'm rhyming not even intentionally so I hope you have a fabulous Thursday. We are nearly at the end of the week and I hope you find something that makes you smile today.

I'll see you back here tomorrow morning as always.

031: Using your creative gifts for yourself

So many of us use our creativity to help people in some way: to help people feel less alone, to bring people joy and to make the world a brighter place. But how often do you do that for yourself? That's what we're diving into today!

                            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and happy Wednesday! So I've been thinking lately, so many of us use our creativity to help people feel something. And to help people in some way. To help people feel less alone, to bring people joy, to make the world a brighter place than how we found it. But how often do you do that for yourself? I mean, there is so much out there about using your creativity for good, but how often do we forget that the good also applies to yourself? It's a bit like how we're socialized as women. To take time for everyone else, to give a helping hand whenever we can, and to always put others before ourselves. To the point that it's ingrained in us from an early age that doing things for ourselves is selfish. We hear so much about not pouring from an empty cup, yet we're taught to give everything of ourselves away. The saying about the cup can go against everything we've been brought up believing.

And the same is true to how we approach creativity. Creativity is a gift, but you don't have to just give it all away to other people. There is so much magic in creativity. There's so many profound ways it can be therapeutic and life-giving, but how often do you give that to yourself? So today I want to ask you, How can you use your creativity to give something to you? When was the last time you created something just for yourself? When was the last time you used your own creativity to heal yourself? When was the last time you used your gifts to bring the same joy you bring to other people to you? If it's been a long while, or if you don't think you've ever approached it that way, how can you flip the script? Take these questions with you today and see what comes up for you, because you are just as important as all the people you help and all the good you seek to put in the world. You are just as worthy, and you get to keep some of that magic for yourself too. So while it might feel intimidating, while this might be the first time you've done it, and while it might feel a bit selfish. Really lean in and see how you can use creativity for yourself. I'd love to know your thoughts.

I'm over at MegKissack on Instagram, or you can email me at meg[at]thathummingbirdlife.com. And until tomorrow, remember, everything changes when you believe you matter.

030: Your passions don't have to make sense

Part of the magic of being a multi-passionate person, is that when you put all of your interest, hobbies and passions side by side, they create this completely unique and wonderful, history. And maybe them not making sense is the whole point.

                            Episode transcript:

Hello, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So if you've been around here a while, you'll know that I love a good plan. I have Post it notes in every colour. I could talk about strategy until the sun comes up, goes back down, and then goes up again, and I can happily get lost in planning for hours. And I know I'm not alone in this, but while that's great for getting shit done, sometimes it's not so good for your passions. Part of the magic of being a multi passionate person is that when you put all of your interests, hobbies, and passions side by side, they create this completely unique and wonderful history. It's like they come together, breadcrumb by breadcrumb, to create a trail that no one could have planned out. And the trail is so fascinating because to anyone else, it simply doesn't make sense.

And maybe some days, it doesn't even make sense to you. And that's kind of the whole point. Now I'm a huge advocate for finding the overarching theme of your passions and seeing how they can play a bigger part of your life. But when you apply logic alone and force things to stand neatly in a row, it can take away the very essence of the things that make them passions in the first place. I love this quote from Austin Kleon. He writes, it would seem that one way to help the weirdos is to help them show their value, to put themselves in marketable terms. But there is a terrible possibility that in doing so, you can ruin what is so valuable about them in the first place. So today I want to tell you, your passions and interests don't need to make sense standing next to each other.

They're not the chorus line for some super orchestrated musical. Instead, they're more like a hodgepodge of all your favorite characters from wildly different books. Don't try and logic your way into finding new passions. Instead, follow your curiosities, pick up the breadcrumbs, and see where they lead. Some things you just know. This is your intuition, and while you might not see the bigger picture right now, it's generally worth following. A huge part of being creative is connecting the dots and spotting patterns between seemingly unrelated things. So if you think about it like that, following your curiosity, even though sometimes that'll lead you to following some random rabbit holes, which I find are the best ones, you're only feeding your creativity, and that is a good thing.

So instead of judging yourself on where you feel called to explore, just go explore. Part of the life and part of the magic of being a multi passionate person is feeling like a kid in the candy store. There is so much to learn and there's so much you could do. But one of the most common traps we fall into as multi passionate people is not allowing ourselves to feel like that or thinking it's wrong that we feel like that in the first place. So go give yourself permission to be that kid in the candy store. Maybe you'll stumble upon the things you need to stumble upon. And while you can't predict where you end up on a post it note or in hours of rigorous planning, chances are it will be a 100 times more exciting than any strategy you could come up with. So go follow your curiosity and have a wonderful day.

Have you ever wondered why you put off doing things you’re really looking forward to, or things that you know will make you feel better? I think there is some weird logic to it all, which I'm sharing today.

                              Episode transcript:

Hello. Hello, Daily Peppers. It's Friday, a very happy Friday to you. So there's something I've been thinking about lately, and I've been wondering if it's just a me thing. And if there's anything I've learned in the past 5 years of running that hummingbird life, it's that everything we experience is pretty universal, and we're never on our own no matter what the experience is. So I thought I would share. Have you ever wondered why you put off doing things you're really looking forward to or things that you know will make you feel better? For example, you've got a really great book that you're really looking forward to reading to, but you just can't seem to pick it up. Maybe it's been on your bed stand for quite a while.

Or you've got a project idea that you're getting borderline obsessed with, yet you find yourself pursuing Pinterest or stuck in the planning stage instead of just getting stuck in and started. And it doesn't even have to be about anything as big as starting a new project. It can be trying a new recipe, watching a film you've been looking forward to, or just taking a bit of time for you and just watching the world go by. And it's not like these are things that we don't want to do. We do want to do them, yet we start making excuses. We start thinking of all the reasons we should put them off. Instead of doing the things we want to do, we fill ourselves full of stuff we don't really want to do while we're trying to work out why we don't want to do it, which is a bit downright bizarre if you really think about it and a bit meta. But I think there is some weird logic to it.

I think we can become so stuck in the idea of something having to be a certain way that we fear that it's not gonna meet reality, so we'd rather pretend it didn't exist. I've been there, and I think we've all been there. I bet you can think of one thing you've been wanting to do that you haven't done in a while right now. I know I have. I have a really hard trouble getting myself to have a bath, which is ridiculous if you think about it. I know it makes me feel better, but trying to get myself to do it is damn hard work. So my pep talk for you today is that sometimes you just have to go and do it. Forget the excuses.

Forget the expectations. Forget the crap you've been doing instead of the thing you actually wanted to do. Find a day that works for you and put it in your journal and treat it like a doctor's appointment. The things we want to do matter just as much as the boring, mundane things in life we have to do regardless, and they matter more if you ask me. So this weekend, just go and do that thing. Give yourself the time, give yourself the space, and just do it, because you never know what might inspire you or what you'll think of and where it might lead you. For me, I'm actually gonna have a bath with a book. It's a luxury I never give myself and I put it off all the time.

So I am saying this as much to myself as well as you. You do deserve it. You do need it, and you just need to do it. Make a plan and put it in the diary or just go do it because often you know exactly what you need. It's just a following through that can be tricky. So do the thing this weekend and celebrate having done it because taking care of yourself can be the most radical thing you can do, especially when the world feels upside down. And if you need some accountability or someone to celebrate with, come and message me over on Instagram. I am at Meg Kissack and let me know what you're gonna do or what you have done. 027: You can handle it

                              Episode transcript:

Hello, daily peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. So, a little while ago, I started reading the book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jefferson. And I want to share something I learned that I think feels pretty relevant right now, and it's this. All fears, no matter how specific they are, what they're about, or how deep they are, they all come down to this one thing. The fear of not being able to handle it. So today, I want to remind you that you can handle whatever comes your way. I was talking to a dear friend a while ago about fear and how it's a bit like a catch 22. The thing is, you get more resilient from going through stuff.

Yet because you've gone through stuff, the fear exacerbates because it knows how painful shit can be. But here's something we don't ever take the time to recognize. You are stronger now than you have ever been. You are more capable now than you've ever been. And you have a whole wealth of skills and experience to back that up and to back you up. You can handle things. And the proof is in the fact that you're listening to this right now and that you have handled things. Maybe present, you would have gone back and handled some things a bit differently.

But hindsight is, after all, a strange bastard. Carving your own path is scary. Creativity involves taking risk. And like I say every week on the Courage Makers podcast, creating a life you love takes a shitload of courage. You've got this. You are stronger than you ever thought possible. And you can do it. Even if sometimes you move at a snail's pace with your eyes squeezed really tightly shut, just keep on moving.

Because you can handle whatever the world has to throw at you. I have a feeling you might have needed to hear that today. I know I do. So I hope you have a wonderful Thursday and I'll see you back here tomorrow.
