082: Getting over the fear of the blank page
The idea of starting with a blank page can be pretty scary, so today I want to offer you an antidote to that, that you can come back to time and time again.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women. And today we're diving into something that we all struggle with, and that is the fear of the blank page. Now, this could be quite literal if you are a writer or an artist, or maybe it's starting a new project or starting some kind of new endeavor, which on one hand feels really exciting, but on the other hand feels pretty terrifying. Now, whether it's literally a blank page or not, it's fair to say it can be pretty overwhelming. The idea of starting with nothing can leave us feeling pretty much just stuck and it can take away any sense of progress and just stop us in our tracks and really put a dampener on our momentum. So today I want to offer you an antidote to that and I want to give you a question that I think will help the next time you're facing a blank page, the next time you have no ideas, or the next time you feel uninspired and need a bit of that momentum back. And the question is this.
What do you wish existed in the world? What is something you would love to see more of? What's something that isn't talked about enough? What is a story that you would love to see in the world? What is one thing that you just crave, that you just can't get enough of or that just simply doesn't exist? Because there will always be people who are after the very things you crave? So much of the time we think that we're facing our struggles alone, but the truth is that whatever you're struggling with or whatever you wish existed in the world, there are other people craving the exact same thing. So many of the things that you listen to, you watch, you read, or you look at, they're created with this very question in mind. I know I created the Daily Pet because it was the one thing that I craved and the one thing that I wish existed. I to help me keep going as a creative and multi passionate woman. The things you wish existed in the world often say a lot about you, and often they're things that only you can do. You get to make it as you as possible. You get to have fun. You get to inject your humor, your stories, your experiences, and the combination of all of those things and your skills and your strengths that combine in a way that means they are completely unique to you.
So the next time you get stuck, have a think about what you wish existed. And then whatever medium you create with. Go make something like we were talking about yesterday. Making things doesn't have to be this huge momentous thing, and the thing that you wish existed in the world doesn't have to be this huge purposeful thing that saves the planet. It can be something that you wish existed that would make you laugh. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. It doesn't have to be the final thing you create. It can just be a great jumping off point.
It can be really simple and it can be really tiny. But use this as a starting off point and just see where it takes you. And I can't wait to see what you create. As always, you can reach me over on Instagram egkisak or you can email me@megathumbingbirdlife.com while sometimes it might take me a bit longer than I'd like to respond because I'm a one woman band, please know that you will get a response and I love hearing from you. Have a fabulous day, Daily Peppers, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow.

You get to choose who you spend time with and who you surround yourself with. That's what we're diving into in today's daily pep!

The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck - Sarah Knight

Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. I'm Meg Kissack and I am so excited to start the day with you and thank you for tuning in for the Daily Pep. So if you clicked on this episode thinking that I was going to tell you to grow up and get serious, then you are definitely listening to the wrong podcast. This is all about Rebel Rising over here, and today we are celebrating the fact that you're not in high school anymore and what that means for how you get to choose to live your life now. I don't know about you, but high school was not an amazing experience for me. If you are pretty much a creative weirdo and you are a deep thinker and an empath and you've got your own way of doing things and you want to blaze your own trail, it is not the easiest time. But all of that aside, there's something separate that I really want to focus on today. Back when we're in school, we are put in with a group of people that we have no control over.
Whether we get on with the people, whether they're good for us, whether they make us feel like shit, it is pretty much irrelevant and there's not much you can do about it. But you're not in high school anymore, and you get to choose who you spend your time with. And maybe more importantly, you get to choose who you don't spend your time with. What I really want to remind you today is that you've got so much more choice over your life than you think you do. And we get caught up in comparing our lives and looking at what other people are doing that we might as well be back in high school. But you are no longer there. You no longer have to spend time with with the people that don't make you feel great. You get to choose who to surround yourself with.
And you've got so many more tools to deal with stuff now. You've got every right to put down boundaries. You've got every right to cut people from your life, and you get to walk out the door and not look back if that's what you need to do. Life is way too short to be spending it with people who make you feel shitty, with people that don't care about what you do and people who don't support the path you're on. And it doesn't have to be that drastic. You also don't have to make time for people that you've grown apart from or people that you have naturally drifted away from. You are older, you are wiser and you get to stand up for yourself. This reminds me of the title of the book by Sarah Knight called the the Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck.
In particular, this bit, which I come back to time and time again. Stop spending time you don't have doing things you don't want to do with people you don't like. Now, I don't know about you, but that makes a lot of sense to me. You are not in high school anymore. You have way more control over who you spend time with. And for the people that are in your life that you'd rather not be, but maybe their co workers or family and it's a bit more complicated. You get to put down pretty fucking clear boundaries. You get to decide how much of an influence they're gonna have on you.
And you get to decide to say fuck it and realize that their opinion of you really, really doesn't matter. I want to end today's episode with this quote by the phenomenal Alice Walker. And it's this. You. No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies your right to grow. Remember that. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. Have a great rest of your day, stand up for yourself, put boundaries in place, and I'll see you back here tomorrow.

069: What if the answer's right under your nose?
So often we automatically overlook the most simple answers - but what if things aren’t complicated as you think they are? That’s what we’re diving into on today’s episode of The Daily Pep!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. It's nearly the end of the week. We've almost made it. And here's to not listening to the voice of your inner dream shitter. And here's to keeping going. So the other night, I had horrendous hiccups. It was the middle of the night. I woke mister Meg up. And he just looked at me and just said, have you tried holding your breath? Now usually, I reply with a snarky comment or I would roll my eyes. But I just thought, do you know what? It never works, but let's just give it a go for the sake of it. And much to my surprise, and it pissed me off a little bit, it actually worked.
And I'm sharing this random story about hiccups with you today because because so much of the time when we come across things that are challenging, when we come across creative problems, when we when we deal with things like that, we immediately dismiss the simple things and the things under our nose. We assume that the solution is gonna be this huge convoluted thing and we get really creative about it and we really dive into all the possible things we could do. And so often we forget that sometimes the answer is quite simple and sometimes we just completely ignore the most obvious things because we're so busy trying to think outside the box because we think that's the only way we're gonna find the solution. So today I just invite you to whatever you've got going on in your life, whatever you've got going on in your creative work, just have a think about the obvious solution. Think about the things that are so obvious that you haven't probably even really considered them and see if there's a simpler way to do things.
As creative and multi passionate women, problem solving is one of our big skills, and it's something that we often love to sink our teeth into. But when it comes to our own problems, sometimes we can just end up running around in circles and it can be so frustrating. So look at the obvious solutions and see if one of those works for you. One of the questions that really helps me when I'm running myself in circles is, what is the simplest thing I could do? So I invite you to ask yourself that today. What would your equivalent for holding your breath to stop hiccups be? And would it work for you and maybe try it out? Sometimes, we massively over complicate things, And the simplest thing really is the best route forward. So have a think. Have a look at what's under your nose. And I can't wait to be back with you here tomorrow morning.

067: When life gives you lemons, you don't have to make lemonade.
We’ve all heard the sayings about life giving you lemons, but it’s not actually that helpful when you’re in the middle of it. Because maybe you didn’t want lemonade. Today I'm offering up a much more helpful alternative.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. I have woken up in a very sassy Meg mood, and today, I've got a bit of a anti pep talk for you. If you're listening for the first time, this is the daily pep, and it's about having a daily dose of inspiration, encouragement, and verbalizing to live life on your terms. So we have all heard the saying about life giving you lemons. People say it when they want to be helpful when life isn't going according plan or maybe life's a bit shitty. But actually, it is not that helpful when you're in the middle of it because maybe You didn't want the fucking lemonade. And here's the thing. In this personal development world and this self help world, There is so much pressure to take every shitty moment as a learning moment or turn every crappy thing into something positive or something to feel grateful for.
And while there are times that that can be really helpful, sometimes it is just the last thing you wanna hear. And actually, pretending everything is unicorns farting rainbows isn't very helpful. It can be dangerous when it comes to suppressing things. and it is perfectly natural and perfectly healthy to not feel great about things and not to always have positive vibes only, and I hope you can see the air quotes. So for today's anti pep talk, I just want to remind you that it's okay to be grumpy, You do not have to feel grateful every minute of the day. It is okay for life to give you lemons, and for you to say fuck off, I do not want lemonade. It is okay to be pissed off, and most importantly of all, it's okay to feel whatever you're feeling. Now I should just say this isn't about waiting around in the ship for the fun of it.
It is about just not having the pressure to feel great all the time. Nobody can feel great all the time, no matter what people are showing on Instagram. Or no matter how many slogans there are, about too blessed to be stressed or positive vibes only. You will come out of it, but maybe for now, you just need to feel shitty. So if you take one thing away from today's pep talk, it's that you don't have to always make lemonade. So take the pressure off yourself, and you don't have to immediately turn something that's damn right shitty, into a big life lesson. Life doesn't work like that. I know that and you know that.
Have a great Thursday. I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. And remember, everything changes when you believe you matter.
