103: You are leaving your mark

Today I want to remind you that you are making your mark even if you don't feel like it. Making your mark happens incrementally over time so today I'm sharing two ways for you to see your impact!

                              Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. It is the end of the week, the weekend is nearly here, and I am so excited to celebrate that with you. And today we're diving into all things making your mark, which is something we're pretty passionate about over here. This idea of leaving the world a brighter place and just generally doing what we can to make our lives that bit more joyful and more wholehearted. Now, talking about making a mark and leaving your mark, that is exactly what I want to dive in with you today. As creative and multi passionate women, one of the things that we really, really care about is finding our purpose and our calling and making a difference in the world and really leaving some kind of mark on the world. And that can often feel really intimidating. We can get really stuck on what that purpose or what that calling is.

I work with so many clients on figuring that out and really finding the things that only they can do. And, and also we can really struggle when it comes to the momentum of keeping going and the motivation side of things. So for today's pep talk, I just want to remind you that when it comes to leaving your mark, it is going to look different every day. Your mark doesn't have to always be this huge permanent marker. Sometimes the mark you leave on a day will be more of a faint line of a pencil. Some days it will be a highlighter somewhere. It will be somewhere in between. And that's not only okay, but that is, that is how it just happens.

Because making your mark happens incrementally over time. It's one of these huge life goals that you can't just solve through one project, through one day or through one moment, but because it happens incrementally over time, so often we can't see the extent to which we're making our mark. Sometimes we go through periods where it feels like we're literally making a mark with the lightest pencil possible. Sometimes we can't even see the mark we're making. We don't even imagine that there's even a dot on the paper. And that can be. That can feel pretty shitty. That can really affect our enthusiasm, our motivation, and we can get pretty disillusioned and feel pretty stuck.

So today I really just want to emphasize that, that point about how you make your mark gradually over time, while you might not feel like you're making the biggest mark right now, whether you're having one of those days where it feels like you're where you've got a huge pink fluorescent marker and then you have other days where you have those kind of tiny IKEA pencils that we all collect when we go to the store. Regardless of what kind of days you've been having lately, I really want to tell you that when you look back at the bigger picture, when you stand back and you can see all of the different marks and how they come together, when you can get that kind of perspective, you'll probably be surprised and have a bit of a holy shit moment, because all these days, the significant ones, the ones that feel really insignificant, they really do add up to this much bigger picture. But perhaps you're too in it right now to see that. So I want to leave you with two things. Number one, keep going even though you can't see the amazing mark that you're making and how they all come together. And number two, maybe it's time that you step back and try and get a bit of a bird's eye view. It can be really hard to keep going when you don't feel like you're making a difference or you don't feel like you're making your mark. But trust me, you are.

So do something this weekend to acknowledge that. I know sometimes being a creative person, being a multi passionate, glorious, fabulous woman, it can be so hard to get an objective view on our work because we're so close to it. And it can be so hard to see the forest from the trees. But see if you can just take some time and gather some perspective and look at your work not in terms of exactly what you're working on right now on a project by project basis, but really get that bird's eye view. And I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised. The truth is, is that you are making a mark on the world. And even on the days where you don't even feel the pencil hit the paper, you are inspiring people without even knowing it. And I want to leave you this weekend with a Dr. Seuss quote that I've got on a plaque in my office that always makes me smile. And it's this one. Be who you are and say what you feel. Because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. Have a great weekend. Do something for you and remember that everything really does change when you believe you matter.

102: You don't have to always give your whole self to the world

You have so much value to give the world. But it’s completely up to you how much you give and how you give it: that’s your decision alone. That's what we're diving into in today's Daily Pep!

                              Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women who wanna do more of the creative work, and less of the dream shitting that often stands in the way. Now it is fair to say as creative women who are highly empathetic, who are highly sensitive, and really care about leaving our mark in the world and leaving the world a better place, we tend to put our hearts into everything we do. We tend to wear our hearts on our sleeves, and we often give the world known of all of ourselves. And we put so much of ourselves out into the world in the hopes of changing things, of inspiring people, or making something better in any way. And one of the struggles that can come with that is ending up feeling depleted, ending up feeling like you have this huge responsibility of the world on your shoulders, and feeling like you're not doing enough. So for today's pep talk, I just want to tell you that you do have so much value to give the world. No one doubts that.

But it is also completely up to you on how much you give and how you give it, and that is your decision alone. It can be so hard to put boundaries in place, especially when we're people who are just so used to giving, giving, giving. But we've all been in places of burnout or places where our energy levels are depleted or we're completely unmotivated and uninspired because we possibly gave too much of ourselves and didn't look after ourselves along the way. So today, I just want to remind you that it is not selfish to look after you. It does not make you a bitch to put down boundaries. You can be assertive without being a dick and you don't have to give the world all of you. You get to keep your creativity, your gifts. You get to use them for yourself as well.

You get to use them on completely random projects, which are really fun and might even feel really frivolous or unproductive, and you get to keep some of that magic to yourself. You do not need to give your whole self to the world. One of the things that I think can be really challenging when you're a creative person and you're sharing your work is making sure that you keep some of your creative practice to yourself. When you're public with everything, it can put a different lens on your work and you can end up creating for different reasons and sometimes you lose some of that most intimate personal stuff because you don't necessarily want to share everything with the world. So regardless of what anybody else is saying, regardless of the pressure you feel, regardless of how it might even feel selfish to keep some of yourself for yourself, Know that when it comes to the things that you put in the world, it is completely up to you on how much you give and how you give it. You get to have really firm boundaries. You get to protect yourself, and that is not selfish, that is self preservation. So remember that you have more power than you know, you get to make the decisions, and you get to call the shots.

I hope this is what you needed to hear today, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow.

100: Don't judge what inspires you

Find the things that inspire you and don't judge them. Today I'm sharing my love of 90s chick flick running scenes and taking the guilt out of guilty pleasures!

                                Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is all about giving you the and the rebel rising you need to keep going, to keep doing your thing, and to keep putting great shit into the world. And that is what I wanna dive into today. This idea of inspiration and keeping going, I'm not judging the things that light you up and the things that inspire you. Now one of the things that makes my hair stand on end more than anything else is those really cheesy running scenes In nineties and early 2000 chick flicks. I am a sucker for Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, Ten Things I Hate About You, pretty much anything Mandy Moore is in. And one of the things I love the most in films like that are the really epic, epic moments where the main love interest realizes that they've loved them all along or that they need To go and tell them and pour their heart out to them right now, and usually it's pouring down with rain or they're in a car driving really fast and The music starts to come in and then it gets really epic. Man, I love that shit.

I don't care how cheesy it is. That stuff just, Oh, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. And I know how deliberately they put the music together and they put the scene together, and I just love it. And the reason I'm telling you this is that we have to quit judging what inspires us. We need to quit judging ourselves and being too harsh ourselves and thinking that we have to be inspired by these great works of art because, don't get me wrong, there are so many works of art and so many different things that By me. And it'll be the same for you, but they don't need to be highbrow. They don't need to be these things we hold on a pedestal as society. They can be things that are in our everyday lives.

They can be in some really cheesy nineties chick flicks. And you don't have to defend yourself to anybody. But more than that, don't defend yourself to yourself when it comes to this stuff. The things that inspire you inspire you for a reason. And maybe it's about getting curious about what those reasons are and about how you can recreate that more often in your own life to get into the flow and to really inspire your creative work. But that curiosity comes when you stop judging yourself. So right now, I just want you to let go of all that judgment that you've got about different things that inspire you, And let's just accept the things that inspire us as they are. Maybe it's about getting in your car and blasting Hamilton as loud as you can.

Maybe it's about going back to the books you loved as a child, which aren't the ones that everybody labels as the most inspiring ones. Maybe it's like the Goosebumps series. Whatever it is, quit judging yourself. Go find those things and get reinspired. As creative people, it's hard enough to keep going as it is, let alone with all the judgment. So go find the things that inspire you. Go bring them into your life. And if you're up for sharing, I would love to hear those things over on Instagram, I’m over @megkissack, and I've put the link in the show notes.

So here's to taking the guilt out of guilty pleasures. Here's to leaning into what inspires you even if you can't quite put your finger on why. And here's to doing the work anyway no matter how hard it can be. I hope you're having a bright Tuesday, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow.
