094: The fear of starting over

We're all afraid of failure, things not working out and having to start over. But what if I told you it's already one of your strengths?

        Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pet, which is the only daily podcast for creative, multi, passionate and fabulous women like yourselves who've just got started much to give the world that only they can give. If you read much to do with creativity online, or being a creative person or living a creative life, it will not take you long to come across this idea of failure and just how scared we are of it and how we all have to push past it to live a creative life. This week I want to start by addressing something that I think we all struggle with and it trips all of us up and it's this fear of starting over. I don't know about you, but I've had projects where in the middle of it, I just want to put it all in the bin. And sometimes I'm so tempted to, but the idea of starting all over again does not fill me with joy. It's the same as when we think about failure. We think about hitting rock bottom and we think about having to dig our way out.

And it can be just so overwhelming. But here's the thing. I don't think many of us realize we start over all the time in our lives in so many different ways. When we finish an endeavor and get excited about a new idea, we're starting over. When we enter a new season of our life, we're starting over. When we finish a book or a TV series we love, we're starting over. The truth is that we fear something that we are already so naturally good at that we don't even realise. We don't think of all the different stops and starts in our lives and all the times that we just have to start over.

So if you put it into this train of thought, maybe the fear of starting over isn't as big and as intimidating as we actually thought. Maybe it's less of a mountain and more of a hill. We have a great capacity to start over and we have a great capacity for failure. But sometimes it's just about the lens at which you look at it through. Obviously not all of the time we feel like failure. It's a big, huge learning moment and we can't see the silver lining. That's completely natural. That's human too.

Sometimes we are just going to get pissed off. Sometimes it's not going to feel that great and we're allowed to feel that too. But if there's an area of your life where you need to start over, or maybe there's something you used to love doing that you haven't done in so long. Or maybe you've got a lot of experience in starting writing novels and stopping halfway through starting again. It just feels redundant, or it just feels too much, or you can predict how it's going to go before you've even started. Just start again. Starting again is so much more compassionate than beating yourself up, undermining all the things you have done and not taking into account all the things you have finished and all the things that have gone well. So here's to seeing starting over in a new way, and I can't wait to share part two with you tomorrow.

But it is a bit of a follow up from this and I think it's something that is just gonna feel good and really solidify this. So I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow and have a fabulous day.

          092: Focus on your strengths

We're always taught to focus on our weaknesses and get better at those things. But what would happen if you gave equal attention to your strengths?

          Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. If you've ever thought about what you didn't like about school or what you go back and use time that you wish you'd spent doing something else for, then, I think you're gonna love today's episode. Now, when I think about being back at school, one of the first things I think of is the teachers and all the subjects I didn't like. Now, me and maths, we just don't particularly get on in school. I loved English and history and I just loved stories and writing and I just could not get my head around things like algebra. I couldn't see the real world application. My maths teacher wouldn't give me a valid answer when I asked him what the point was. And also, he was a massive dream shitter.

Our personalities just clashed. He didn't like me, I didn't like him, but I was gonna damn well prove to him that I could get a good grade for GCSE maths. Now, on the other side of the spectrum, I adored my English teacher. She had so much faith in me. She told me that one day she's gonna see one of my books on the shelves and buy it. And that was a place that I really thrived. But the problem with our school system is that we are taught so much to concentrate on our weaknesses and build them up rather than building on our strengths. And that's what I really want to challenge today, because I think we take that so much into other areas of our life, way beyond leaving school.

I look back now and I think, what if I just spent all those hours where I was working on algebra and just determined to prove this guy wrong? What if I spent that time actually focusing on the things I was good at and the things that really lit me up? I could have actually spent that time getting that one step closer to my English teacher being able to buy a book. Because maybe I could have used that time to actually develop an idea and really get into my creative practice and really just dive into that. The truth is, there are always going to be things you're stronger at and things that you're weaker at, but your weaknesses don't make you a weak person. And life is way too short to spend it proving to somebody that you can do something that you don't really give a shit about. So have a think about your strengths, not your weaknesses. Have a think about the things that light you up and have a think about how you would like to spend your time. Whenever we get any feedback, any appraisal, any of that stuff, we automatically go for the things that we could do better. Maybe it's an overachiever in us, maybe it's our self esteem, or maybe it's just a negativity bias that all of us have got.

Regardless of the reason, the next time you get feedback, the next time you're considering working on something which you don't actually really care about but you feel like you should get better at, question whether that's actually the important thing and if time would actually be better spent doing the things you love. I know we all tend to roll our eyes a bit when we hear that phrase do the things you love, but there's so much more to it. When you do things you actually like, you bring a different energy to it because it's something you love doing, you're naturally in a better mood, you treat people better, you've got more time for things. And I think doing things we love when we can can make us a better human being. So here's to saying fuck your weaknesses and here's to playing to your strengths because you have so many of them. Regardless of what shitty maths teacher you had back in high school. If you're curious about doing something that I know my maths teacher would not like, you can sign up to be a supporter of the Daily Pep over on Patreon, where this week I've launched a tip jar to give Daily Peppers a way of contributing to the vision of the Daily Pep and investing in the future of the Daily Pep. You can get all of the details over at patreon.com/dailypep the link is in the show notes.

I hope your day is as fabulous as you are, and I can't wait to be back with you bright and early tomorrow morning.

                  Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the daily pet, which is the only daily podcast, the creative and multi passionate women. Wanna get out of their own way and put Epic share into the world. Now when it comes to building a life you love and doing your own thing, let's not beat around the bush. It can be a bit lonely. There are some people who don't understand why we do what we do or why we want the life we want. And some people, it doesn't matter how many different ways we try and explain what we do. They just don't get it.

For me, I've lost count of the amount of conversations I've had where I meet someone and they asked me what I do. I tried to explain it, and they drop off before the end of the first sentence. Sometimes when you don't fit easily into a box or easily into a job title, it makes other people uncomfortable. and it can make you feel a bit shitty and just add to the loneliness. So for today's pep talk, I just want to tell you that it's not your job to make other people feel people. Here's the funny thing. As society, we root for the underdog. We really cheer on nonconformity We really hold up the people who are doing things differently.

But sometimes when it comes to meeting one of those people in real life that don't do things the way that they quote should do, It's another story altogether. So if you're in that boat and a lot of us are, I just want to encourage you that No matter how tempting it sometimes is. Never fit yourself into a box because it feels easier or because you get so sick of the bee knees faces. The truth is that those people are not your people. It can be so frustrating when other people don't get what you do. And sometimes it can feel like a battle. On the one hand, you want more than anything to fit in and belong. On the other hand, you want to stand out and be different.

And sometimes it feels like a constant struggle as to which one's gonna win, but sometimes you have to face up to the truth. that you can't fit in unless you're willing to compromise so much of what makes you you, and make yourself smaller to make other people feel comfortable. The irony is if you did try everything you could to fit in, you'd feel like a fraud anyway because that just wouldn't be what is authentic to you. You might think that it would solve all your problems, but I'm sorry, but it won't. It can be a really horrible feeling. -- feeling like you don't fit in or that no one is ever gonna get you, but your people are out there. And the world needs you exactly as you are, even though sometimes you don't feel welcome, you get those bemused faces. and you feel like you have to explain your life and your life choices to everyone.

You do not. You do not have to make anybody feel comfortable. Is not your job to explain your life choices or justify the reasons why you do the things you do? There is no one out there like you and no one who can bring to the world exactly what you do in the way you do it. Here's the thing that I often come back to. There are so many things I wouldn't have done if I felt like I fit in or I felt like everybody got me, from the word go. I would have never started the daily pap nor the code maker's podcast. I would never have sought out the things that make me happy, like laughter yoga, performance, poetry, and country music. I wouldn't have found Mr Meg, who I met in 2002, where we bonded over our feeling of not fitting in and, obviously, emo music, and I wouldn't have owned my skills and talents like I did. And the same is true for you. There are things and experiences you never would have had if you fit in. If you confirmed you would have had to give up so many of the things that make you you, and you wouldn't be 2 thirds of the person you are today. Your difference is what sets the world on fire. And you are so much stronger than you think because of it. You just can't get through years of feeling like nobody gets you or that you don't fit in, That being strong and standing up for yourself, even if that is just in your head. So here's to never making yourself smaller to make somebody else feel bigger.

Here's to not fit in into a box, and here's to finding your people. If you're wondering where all the like minded women are hanging out, Go and check out the Couragemaker's podcast, which is a daily pep's sister podcast, where there are so many women sharing their own journeys, have not fallen into a box, their dreams, their fears, and all the things they've learned along the way. I've put the link to The Couragemaker's Podcast in the show notes. Here's to being fabulously you, and I can't wait to be back with you here tomorrow.

We've all rolled our eyes at the expression 'take your foot off the pedal' because as nice as it would be, it's just not possible for everyone. 082: Getting over the fear of the blank page

The idea of starting with a blank page can be pretty scary, so today I want to offer you an antidote to that, that you can come back to time and time again.

                          Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative and multi passionate women. And today we're diving into something that we all struggle with, and that is the fear of the blank page. Now, this could be quite literal if you are a writer or an artist, or maybe it's starting a new project or starting some kind of new endeavor, which on one hand feels really exciting, but on the other hand feels pretty terrifying. Now, whether it's literally a blank page or not, it's fair to say it can be pretty overwhelming. The idea of starting with nothing can leave us feeling pretty much just stuck and it can take away any sense of progress and just stop us in our tracks and really put a dampener on our momentum. So today I want to offer you an antidote to that and I want to give you a question that I think will help the next time you're facing a blank page, the next time you have no ideas, or the next time you feel uninspired and need a bit of that momentum back. And the question is this.

What do you wish existed in the world? What is something you would love to see more of? What's something that isn't talked about enough? What is a story that you would love to see in the world? What is one thing that you just crave, that you just can't get enough of or that just simply doesn't exist? Because there will always be people who are after the very things you crave? So much of the time we think that we're facing our struggles alone, but the truth is that whatever you're struggling with or whatever you wish existed in the world, there are other people craving the exact same thing. So many of the things that you listen to, you watch, you read, or you look at, they're created with this very question in mind. I know I created the Daily Pet because it was the one thing that I craved and the one thing that I wish existed. I to help me keep going as a creative and multi passionate woman. The things you wish existed in the world often say a lot about you, and often they're things that only you can do. You get to make it as you as possible. You get to have fun. You get to inject your humor, your stories, your experiences, and the combination of all of those things and your skills and your strengths that combine in a way that means they are completely unique to you.

So the next time you get stuck, have a think about what you wish existed. And then whatever medium you create with. Go make something like we were talking about yesterday. Making things doesn't have to be this huge momentous thing, and the thing that you wish existed in the world doesn't have to be this huge purposeful thing that saves the planet. It can be something that you wish existed that would make you laugh. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. It doesn't have to be the final thing you create. It can just be a great jumping off point.

It can be really simple and it can be really tiny. But use this as a starting off point and just see where it takes you. And I can't wait to see what you create. As always, you can reach me over on Instagram egkisak or you can email me@megathumbingbirdlife.com while sometimes it might take me a bit longer than I'd like to respond because I'm a one woman band, please know that you will get a response and I love hearing from you. Have a fabulous day, Daily Peppers, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow.
