274: To choose or not to choose
Today we're diving into the idea of consciously choosing not to do something, and giving yourself a huge permission slip!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. It's the end of the week. We made it. The weekend is nearly here, and if you need a big old dollop of permission, you're in the right place now. I shared earlier in the week how intention is my word for the year. And as I started really building on my own habits and routines, there's been one conversation that just keeps popping up again and again, and it's this notion of choice. The choice whether to do something, whether not to do something, and everything in between. Now, when we start to think about choice and making decisions, most of the time we're focusing on things that we're choosing to do or things we want to do, but we very rarely have discussions about the things we choose not to do.
This came up for me really recently in a conversation with my therapist when we were diving into avoidance behaviors. And she said something that has really stuck with me and I really want to share with you because I think it might be really helpful. I'm probably gonna butcher what she said, but she said there's a difference between not doing something and consciously choosing not to do it. And when she said that, a light bulb just went off in my head and it was like a whole shitload of permission. It's this idea that, yeah, we can choose not to do things, but make sure you're consciously choosing them rather than acting on autopilot or not questioning any of your choices. This comes up for me a lot around snoozing my alarm clock. And something really started to change when I realized that I could just consciously choose to ignore my alarm clock and go back to sleep. And in the conscious choosing, I was choosing in that moment to be more compassionate and to let go of any of that guilt or shame or beating myself up or berating myself and all that negative self talk.
And I could actually make peace with that decision, own it, and go back to sleep, not beating myself up. So this weekend, I really invite you to consciously choose if there's something that you feel like you should be doing but you don't want to do, rather than just not do it, consciously choose not to do it. Write yourself a permission slip, make peace with it, and own it. Because we've all been there where we're procrastinating and we're avoiding doing something. And even though we might go and put the telly on or go and read a book, we can't really concentrate on it because at the back of our head, we just have this nagging feeling and we know what we're meant to be doing, that if you consciously choose not to do something, something just starts to shift. You can be more present with yourself rather than beating yourself up and it's just a whole lot more compassionate. So try it on for size, see what you think. Give it a go.
And here's to being more compassionate with yourself. Because no matter how kind you treat yourself, we can always, always do with more compassion and things that actively rally against our inner dream shutters. So give it a go. I hope you have a fabulous weekend and you get to do something for you. And remember that if you missed a daily perfume the weekend, you can sign up to my Letters of Rebellion, which are my Sunday emails where I share different things I'm working on, things I'm reading, things I'm learning about, and generally the behind the scenes of me creating my creative, wholehearted everyday life in the hopes that there might be something in there that helps you build yours. You can get them by going to the rebelrousers.com and clicking on Sunday Emails, or you can click the handy link in the Show Notes. So I look forward to seeing you either on Sunday on your inbox or Monday in your earbuds. And I look forward to seeing you then. Have a good one.

271: Is it a crappy book?
If you're working on your own habits and routines, and struggling to find a way to make things stick, this one's for you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. If you need a bit of help with routines and establishing habits, well, you have definitely come to the right place. So since the beginning of this year, I've started working weekly with an accountability coach. We meet for a quick chat every Monday. And it has just been so helpful in planning my week and also really sticking to the things that I say I want to do. Now, my word for this year is intentional, and I'm really focusing on being more intentional about how I spend my time and how I spend my energy. And one thing I would love to do more of is reading fiction. While I love a good box set, I find reading there's so much more for my mental health and just is just pure escapism.
And I know it's really good for me and I love doing it, but I struggle to really carve out the space for it. So that has been one of the goals we've been working on this year. And the reason I'm telling you that is because I want to share a conversation we had that really, really made me think about things when it comes to setting goals and why we set them in the first place. So during one of the first calls, I was talking about how I just can't seem to get myself to read. And I've been stuck on the same book for quite a while now. And at the time, I wanted to set the goal of reading one book a week, which I've now turned more into my nighttime routine. But as I was talking about how I was struggling with it, they turned around to me and just said, but is the book shit, though? And honestly, that has become such a big light bulb moment for me because here's the thing about habits and routines. They can be really hard and they can be really difficult.
And as we've talked about a lot around here, they need to be based in joy. But if you are doing something that you don't even enjoy, or if you're trying to get yourself to do something that doesn't really light you up, or you haven't figured out a way to bring more joy to it, then it is going to be so much fucking harder. And in hindsight, I mean, I did persevere with the book, and I moved on to a different one and realized that it wasn't actually my cup of tea. And now that I'm reading a genre that I love, which is young adult dystopian fiction, I am finding it so much easier to build more reading into my life. So today I really want to ask you, when it comes to any habits or routines that you're trying to set up for yourself, is the book shit? And what I mean by that is, are you trying to get yourself to do something that you just don't want to do, or is there a way that you could make it just slightly brighter or more enjoyable? If one of your goals is to exercise more, are you choosing a type of exercise that is enjoyable or at the very least, bearable? If your goal is to write more, are you enjoying what you're writing? And if your goal is to get more intentional about your time and energy and really set up these habits and routines, are you doing it in a way that lights you up? And if not, how could you do that? So that is my food for thought for the day. Here's to recognising our shit books. And here's to doing things in a way that works for us, no matter what they look like on the outside. See you tomorrow. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.

268: Find the unexpected treasure
Today we're diving into the importance of experimenting, and leaning into uncertainty.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep, which is the only daily podcast for creative, multipassionate, and frankly, fabulous women who are already making the world a brighter place just by being in it. Now we talk a lot on the daily prep about creativity, about getting started, about finishing projects. And today, I wanna dive into one of my very favorite topics, and that's this idea of experimenting. I think so many of us are avid planners. We love all the post it notes, and we love having a game plan and an action plan. We like to know where we're headed. We like to know what we have to do along the way, and we're not such a huge fan of the word uncertainty.
But today, I encourage you just to throw planning to the wind for a bit and just dive deep into experimenting because experimenting is where the magic happens. And there are so many different ways to experiment. Maybe you're experimenting with trying out a new medium. Maybe you're experimenting with where you want to be in life and where you fit. Maybe you're experimenting with habits, with daily routines, or you could be experimenting in a million of different other ways. But the reason I bang on about experimenting so much on the daily PEP is that it allows you to approach things with curiosity and I think it really helps to remove that sense of failure or success, which I know all of us can get so trapped into. But more than that, experimenting helps you discover parts of yourself that you probably wouldn't discover otherwise. Experimenting gives you the shovel that allows you to dig holes and find parts of yourself that are completely unexpected or you didn't know existed.
So my reminder and my encouragement for you today is this, put away the planning for a second. Follow something that you maybe even just be mildly curious about or have an inkling about. Try something you've never tried before or do something in a completely new way. The chances are that whether it, quote, fails or succeeds, you are gonna learn something about yourself along the way that you will probably end up taking to a bunch of other projects you do, and you are laying the framework and the breadcrumbs of things that you might not be able to see the big picture of right now, but that definitely lie ahead. So here's to leaning into that uncertainty. Here's to experimenting, and here's to finding parts of yourself that you didn't know existed, and really finding the treasure that awaits. Have a fabulous Thursday, and I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow. Have a good one.

258: Reverse engineering what you want
Sometimes the gold can be found in the things we don't want. Today we're diving into how to find what you actually want.
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. We are over halfway through the week, and if you need a reminder to just give things a go, you've come to the right place. Now, I am somebody who loves candles, preferably pumpkin scented or something really bright and colorful, but I love a good candle. Now, one of the candles I fancied for a while is one of those crackling candles. They're pretty big and they're purposely made to imitate the sound of a correcting fire. The wick is pretty big and they're pretty fucking fancy, so I decided to get one. I ran myself a really nice bath, and just as I was getting in the bath with a good book, I lit the candle, got in the bath, I led there for a good couple of minutes and realized it was really fucking annoying. The sound that I thought was going to be really soothing really just got under my skin and it wasn't long before I just blew it out.
And the reason I'm sharing this with you today is just a really friendly reminder that sometimes we don't know what we want until we get the things that we think we want. The fact is, often you don't know what you want until you try something. And sometimes the things you think you really want end up being the exact opposite. Now, this isn't me trying to shit all over your dreams. Rather, it is about really encouraging you to get curious about the things you want and give them a try before putting all your eggs in that basket. It's about experimenting. It's about leaning into that strong sense of curiosity that you naturally have. And it's about doing overthinking and planning.
It can be so easy to reduce this story to Meg bought a really shit candle. The end. But that would be completely ignoring the lessons that it has to give. And the lesson I ultimately want to share with you today is that when carving out, when building that creative, wholehearted, meaningful life that you dream of, it's so easy to think that all of the answers are going to lie in finding something that you really want, but often finding the things that you really don't want end up being more valuable. So today I invite you to reflect on the lessons that you've learned from your version of that really fucking annoying candle. And I invite you to get curious to see if there are actually any gems in there. So have a good day, have a good think, and I will happily be going back to my bog standard boring candles and loving them even more. See you tomorrow.
