394: Give yourself credit

We're so good at dismissing our successes and achievements, and today we're turning that on its head!

Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. Around here, we are all about celebrating our wins and looking at just how far we've come. And today, I wanna do things a bit differently because I just wanna use our time together today to encourage you to give yourself credit for just how much you do and how much you've got on your plate. Now naturally on a Friday, we are thinking about all the things that we did do. And let's face it, we spend a lot more time thinking about the things that we didn't do. One of the things I love to do in my group programs is have a toot your horn Friday where we celebrate our wins and actually acknowledge just how far we've come. And one of the reasons I'm such a huge advocate for doing that is that sometimes it is just so hard to look at what we've actually accomplished and not go down that rabbit hole of beating ourselves up, which for many of us, me included, is our kind of default way of being. And I think we do this for so many reasons.

If we're socialized as women, we're taught to be humble, not to brag, and we generally don't own the good things about ourselves. And we tend to give credit away to other people or external circumstances. For example, if somebody tells us we're doing a good job, we might respond with, oh, well, that was just a fluke. That was just one of those days. If we're working in a team, we might give all of the credit away to other people. And honestly, it's so easy to dismiss what we have done because so often we don't even recognize what we've contributed. And in the back of our mind, there's usually this idea of don't brag, sacrifice above all else, and just keep going. But today, I am saying a huge fuck that to all of this shit because taking credit does not make you arrogant, does not make you this horrible person.

But what it does make you is somebody who owns your strengths and your skills and also a shitload of motivation to keep going. Because if you can actually feel like you're making progress and you can celebrate your successes no matter how big or how small they are along the way, it is so much easier to keep that motivation and energy up, and it also makes life a whole lot more satisfying. So today, let's just for a second give yourself a bit of fucking credit. You do so many things, and, yeah, there are always gonna be external circumstances. But the one thing in common of all of these things is you and you get to take some of the credit. You get to own that. You get to toot your own horn, and you get to look at the things you have done and be compassionate for the things that you haven't done because chances are there are very valid reasons and you are busy doing other stuff. We're gonna dive more into this next week, but you do more than you know.

You have so much more on your plate than you probably even recognize, and you deserve so much more credit than you give yourself. And just a reminder for those of us who struggle with taking compliments, people don't tend to say things just for the point of being nice. So here's to telling yourself today, actually, I'm doing a bloody good job. And if you're in a dream, should have hyped up with all this stuff about what you haven't done or reminders about outstanding things, today it can just go fuck off. Give yourself credit, take the credit, and remember that you're doing pretty damn good. Whatever you get up to this weekend, I hope you do something to acknowledge all the things that you do do. And I can't wait to see you back here either in your inbox on Sunday for my regular letter of rebellion. There's more about that in the show notes if you don't already receive them or on your speakers on Monday morning.

Have a good one. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter and you really fucking matter.Good morning, daily peppers, and a very happy Friday to you. 393: I know you know this

Today we're diving into head knowledge (what we know intellectually) and heart knowledge (knowing something in our bones.

Episode transcript:

Good morning daily peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. Now around here on the Daily Pep, I'm always aware that when we're diving into things like the need for rest and why it's actually productive, why aiming for progress over perfection is really important, and why the showing up counts. I'm really aware that these are things that we already intellectually know. I know that you know these things, but it is so hard to go from knowing something intellectually to knowing it in your bones and taking action from it. I like to think of it a bit like head knowledge and heart knowledge. Head knowledge is that we know that rest is really important and it actually makes us more productive. But often, it doesn't always translate into heart knowledge in terms of often we are acting in complete opposites of that even though we know that, for example, rest is really productive. Now this is something that we all struggle with, and this is one of the biggest reasons I started the daily pep.

Around here, we love personal development. We know the things that we could be doing, but it's so hard to do them. And these are basically daily reminders of let's actually do the thing, not just know the thing. And today, I really want to encourage you to think about one thing that you completely understand on an intellectual level that it would make a huge difference, but you really struggle to do. Maybe it's about showing up even though you're scared. Maybe it's about putting yourself back on your to do list because everything else tends to get done, but you completely forget to look after yourself. Or maybe it's about realizing that your self worth is never on the line and that the things you do do not have a direct reflection of your value as a human being. Whatever it is for you, today's challenge is to really have a think about one thing that could make a big difference.

Chances are you've got the book. You've listened to the podcast. You've got the tools to start implementing some of this stuff, but it can seem really overwhelming when there's so much stuff to try out. But today, I just want you to commit to trying one thing. It could look like stopping before you're exhausted. It could look like aiming for 70% rather than a 100%. Or it could do with using something like Mel Robbins' 5 second rule, where you count backwards from 5 and you just make yourself do that thing that you've been meaning to do, that you want to do, that you just can't get yourself to do. So have a think about the different things that you've been learning, listening to, reading about lately, and just try one of them on for size.

It's that whole Rome wasn't built in a day, but you have to start somewhere. And let's start getting this head knowledge into heart knowledge and seeing what a difference it can make. And let's not beat ourselves up along the way because this shit is hard. So pick something, give it a go, experiment, and see what happens. Have a fabulous rest of your Thursday, and I'll see you back here bright and early as always tomorrow morning.

392: 3 ways to improve your to-do list

Today's episode is a practical one and we're diving into ways to make your to-do list more compassionate and work for YOU!

Episode transcript:

Good morning daily peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. We are in the middle of the week, and if your to do list is still feeling pretty damn long and you feel like you're not gonna get through it all, this one is for you. When it comes to all the things we have to do, I think we're really good at creating a false sense of urgency around everything. It's so easy to look at our to do list, and everything feels like it's equally weighted simply by the fact that it's on the list already. So today, I thought it would be helpful just to have a quick look at your to do list together and have a look at what is genuinely urgent, what you're putting off because it feels like it's too big a job, and how we can break that down. So if you haven't got a kind of list of priorities for the week, first of all, I want you to think of what are the things that absolutely have to get done. What are some things, we're gonna call them added bonuses, that it would be great to get done but isn't vital? And as essential as the urgent things, what can you do for yourself along the way? Now if you've got your to do list already, I want you to take a quick look at it and see what you can let go of. I know for me, I love stationery.

I love writing, and that results in me writing super long to do lists because it also makes me feel really damn productive. And it's almost like in the moment of writing the to do list, I forget that I've actually gotta do the stuff. So let's start by just scrapping anything or delaying until next week anything that absolutely doesn't have to be done. Are there things that have been rolling over on your to do list for weeks that really you can let go of, or are there any things that is probably just a bit unrealistic for you to get done? Now when we've scrapped those things, have a look if there's anything on there which isn't really yours to do or you could delegate to somebody else. Is there anything that you've said yes to which just isn't feasible for you right now that you can go back and renegotiate? And, also, is there anything on there that you don't really have to do, but maybe last week you wanted to that just doesn't feel that good anymore? And maybe you want to replace it with something else or maybe let's just scrap that one too. And lastly, is there anything that is missing off your to do list? Any little jobs that really do need doing that you just keep telling yourself that you're a member because you need to do them or are so small that you don't think it's worth putting on the list? Well, let's get it all on there because these are the things that take up so much mental space and the things that often come to bite us in the bum at the end of the week because naturally we've forgotten them. Here's the thing about to do lists. They can be really helpful in getting us to do things in a more compassionate way if we just take a bit of time to do them rather than just jotting down everything that comes to mind.

If we can get more intentional about whether we actually need to do the thing or whether the small things are on the list too and we've allocated time for them, then I think we can make them a whole lot more realistic. And, also, we don't get us set into doing things that are mainly just busy work that are pretty unimportant and take us away from the things we actually need to be doing. So review your to do list, see if there's anything that can come off, see if there's any small but important things that you've missed off, and see if you can add at least one nice thing for yourself on there. It doesn't have to be huge. It can be really, really small, but remember to put yourself on your to do list. So happy hump day. We are over halfway through the week, and keep going. I'll see you tomorrow.

388: Build a life YOU love

If you've ever been called flaky or struggled with this idea of being a jack of all trades, this one's for you!

        Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Now, yesterday we were given ourselves a mission to let go of the things that no longer serve us and any things where our interest has waned, but we feel like we've put a decent amount of time and energy into it and just let that shit. And today, following on from that, we are diving into this whole idea of flakiness as multi-passionate people.

Now as people who are interested in many things, we know that our interests tend to come and go. We've got a pretty eclectic collection of stuff and so many books and so many different topics. And one of the things I think we struggle with as a bit of a jack of all trade, Is this idea of being flaky. We worry what other people think of us.

We get frustrated when we are really deep down the rabbit hole or something, but then we just wake up the next day and our interest just isn't there. And it can be really easy to see ourselves as people who don't commit or people who don't finish things. Now today, I wanna remind you that there are so many reasons that we don't commit to as multi-passionates. So I actually think one of our superpowers is that we usually tend to have an intuitive sense of what doesn't feel good anymore and when to just stop. But we get really into our heads about what that means. We really look into it, and sometimes we just feel like we have to prove ourselves or other people wrong and show that we can follow through.

But here's the. You do finish and you do follow through on so many things, and it's okay to let the things that no longer interest you or light you up go. You have nothing to prove to anybody else around here. We are all about birthing a life you love, not a life that other people love on your behalf.

And if something just doesn't feel good, don't hold onto it because you wanna prove that you can commit to things, you can finish things or you're not fla. The thing is the people who see you that way, well they're not the ones doing it and chances are they don't care as much as you do. And I mean that in the most loving kind of way.

They're not actually that affected by whether you commit or finish things as you think. What we all logically know, but I think we tend to kind of forget, is. One of the other brilliant things and the superpowers that comes with being multi-passionate is that you bring all of the things you've learned and all of your experiences and all of your skills onto your next project, and nothing is ever wasted.

It makes you such a good problem solver. You can bring so many different perspectives to the table that other people can't, and you do that by regularly changing things. So if you've got something on your plate, whether that's a project or otherwise, that you are feeling fresher to just follow through on or commit to because you wanna start changing this narrative of being flaky or somebody who doesn't finish things, let that thing go and let's reframe that narrative in other ways.

We all thrive on excitement and interesting things, and when that goes, things just start to feel like a. And life is too short to have our interests and our hobbies feel like chores. The fact is, you are somebody that finishes things, but you don't need to finish this particular thing to prove a point, not to yourself or anybody.

So take this as a permission slip You need today. Know that you are actually not flaky and you have many superpowers and focus on that. I. Have a good one, and I'll see you tomorrow.
