172: Creativity for fun's sake
It can be so easy to get lost in the things we feel we should or need to be doing. If it's been a while since you did a creative project just for fun, today I'm giving you full permission to do just that!
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. If you're looking for some encouragement, some verbalizing, and you just wanna start getting out of your own way and stop being your own personal dream shitter, you've come to the right place. Last week on the daily pet for episode 165, we really dived into this idea of creating without the shoulds. And I think that's something so many of us get caught up in. We get caught up in the things that we should be creating, what projects we should be working on. And sometimes in our effort to get our work seen, get our work out there, or really reach our creative goals, I think we can tend to be really strategic. And on one hand, that can be really, really good, but sometimes we start to lose why we started creating in the first place Rather than being a fun and joyful thing where we can just get lost in the flow, creativity almost becomes another to do list item. So if you're feeling like this and I know a lot of us struggle with this, then today I really want to remind you that it's okay to use your creativity to have fun and do projects for fun sake.
It can be so easy to lose the joy and it can be so easy to feel all the pressure, But I'm betting one of the reasons why you've made creativity a big priority in your life is because it's something that you really love. And along the way, we all have times where we start to lose that and we start to forget why we started in the first place. So I just want to remind you that it's okay to do things fun and invite you to start some kind of creative project that you just do for fun's sake. It doesn't have to mean anything. It could be a really silly gift for a friend's birthday. It can be pretty much anything you want it to be. The only criteria is that it either has to bring a smile to your face or you just do it for the hell of it. So it's an extra short and sweet one today because I just wanna give you full permission to do something creative just for fun sake, not to worry about the outcome, not to worry about sharing it, not worrying about the meaning behind it.
Just do something for fun. Our creativity gives us a huge capacity to find joy and just be silly. And I think it's about time we just rose to the challenge. So find something silly, find something fun for you, and create for fun's sake. It will help get you out of a rut. It will help you remember your why in the first place. And if the only thing it does is makes you smile, well, that's a good outcome in my books. I'll see you back here bright and early tomorrow morning.

168: Take a marathon approach
Building a wholehearted creative life you love takes patience, grit and stamina. Today we’re diving into how to take a marathon approach instead of sprinting, which often leads to burnout.
Episode transcript:
Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday to you. It's nearly the end of the day. We made it. And if you're feeling a bit exhausted, and if you're feeling just quite worn out, well, hopefully this episode is gonna help. So yesterday on the daily pep, I was sharing all of my many issues with the idea of having positive vibes only. And today, I wanna dive into something that I find really personally helpful. I know a lot of my clients find helpful, and it's this idea of approaching life as a marathon, not a sprint. Now I can easily get really caught up into the whole kind of rhetoric around you only live once.
And if I'm gonna be really honest with you, which I always am, that stresses me the fuck out. It feels like I'm being chased by a grandfather clock, and it just I don't even know where to begin. And I think there can be so much value with really looking and acknowledging how precious life is and really get an intention about what you wanna do with your time and what you want to leave with the world and how you wanna make the world a brighter place. But I think as well life can be long, and I know from a whole lot of experience that burnout is very real. While it can be tempting to approach life like a sprint, at some point, you're just gonna run out of steam. Like we were talking about yesterday about positive vibes only, it's just not sustainable and I think sustainability has to be a huge part of the conversation when it comes to building a wholehearted creative life that you love and that only you could live. And I think not only is it unsustainable, it's also pretty unrealistic especially at the moment when we're surrounded by so much uncertainty. I know so many of us are feeling so much more tired than normal and we're just not able to go at a a pace that maybe we're used to going at.
And not only is that okay, it's probably to be expected at this point. So my daily pet for you today is just to get curious about taking your foot off the gas pedal quite so hard. It's about looking at how you can get intentional about how you spend your time in a way that's sustainable and really fills you up for the long term. Now I know there are gonna be some people listen to this where that just doesn't feel realistic at the moment because they're putting out fires every which way they turn. And if that's you, if you can find even the smallest pockets of time to take for yourself, and I get that might feel particularly impossible right now, Try to. But if you are not fighting fires right now, think about how you can really start to approach life like a marathon. See how you can schedule in breaks. See what kind of fuel you need to keep yourself going.
Look at the kind of support you need and look at getting that support. And instead of giving a 100%, and let's face it, around here it's more like 310% to everything you do, What if you tried to give your equivalent of 70%? Because chances are your 70% is already fucking fantastic. So this weekend, remember that it's not a sprint. There is no gold medal of life and let's face it, there definitely is no gold medal if you're too burnt out to get to where you want to go. So take off your super speedy running shoes, get into something a bit more comfortable, and think about what a marathon approach would look like for you. I hope you have a fabulous weekend. I hope you get to take some time just for you. And if you miss a daily pep on the weekend, make sure you sign up to my Sunday emails where I share all the things I'm learning about all the tips and things that help build a wholehearted creative life that only you can live and all of the personal most vulnerable stuff that I just don't share anywhere else.

164: You don't have to have all the hobs on
Sometimes we’re truly busy, but other times we’re busy for busy’s sake, because that’s what we feel we have to do. Today I’m inviting you to get more strategic and take the things off your plate that don’t need to be there!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday to you. It's a new week, and you're listening to the Daily Pet, which is the only daily podcast all about rebel rousing you, encouraging you, and inspiring you to be your own rebel riser instead of your very own personal dream shitter. Now this weekend, I was thinking all about cooking. And one of the things I was thinking about is our kitchen hobs. Now I don't know about you, but when I'm cooking too many things, things start going wrong. The smoke detector starts going off and it sounds a lot like the start of 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton. And at some point, I lose track of a timer and it all just gets a little bit chaotic. And I always think about how this can relate to our lives.
Because I know for me, when I've got all the kind of metaphorical life hops on, things start getting pretty chaotic too. I start dropping the ball on different things. I get forgetful, and it is just really hard to keep a track of everything. It's hard to stop one thing from burning or something else needs attention, and it's not long before things get really overwhelming. Now there are times in our lives where all the hobs are on and there's nothing we can do about it. There's times when we are just dealing with loads of unexpected shit, and it is just a case of standing in front of our lives or our ovens and trying our best to deal with what's going on as it comes up. And at that point, really, truly, all you can do is your best. And your best will look different from day to day, and that's okay.
But other times, I think we end up with all the hops on because it also feels really good to be busy. It feels really productive. We feel like we should have all the hops on because we think everybody else has the hops on and the oven and the grill and everything else. And we feel like we have to do the same. But that is bullshit. Busyness for busyness sake just causes stress, which causes just untold number of problems. And if there's something we don't need more of in our lives, it is stress. So today, I just invite you to get a bit more strategic about the things that you've got cooking.
Like we do when we're cooking, how can you cook a one pot meal instead of a huge different selection of dishes? How can you be smart about what things you can put together? And how can you actually take things off the stove? What would happen if instead of seeing the 4 available rings, you just got really smart with how you use 2? I know this isn't always possible, but sometimes I think it's fair to say as empathetic, as ambitious, as really caring women, we can tend to put things on our plate that don't need to be there. And before long, we're not only cooking a dinner in our house, but we're actually taking care of all of the neighbors' hops as well. And it can just get it can get too much. So if you need permission to let go of some of the things that aren't really urgent or important, This is it. And if you've got all 4 of your hops burning and you feel like you need another 4 and life is just chaotic at the moment, know that it won't always be. You won't always have all 4 hops on, and this won't last forever. So have a great start to your week. Have a think about what you can take off your plate.
And I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow morning. If you miss the Daily Pep on the weekend, you can sign up to my Sunday emails where I share all of my tips, strategies, all the things I'm learning, all about building a wholehearted creative life you love and that only you can live. 162: Don't give it all to your future self
Today we’re diving into how you can be kinder to your future self and how you can stop placing all the burdens on future you!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. If you need some encouragement, if you need some general rebel rising, and if you need just to be reminded that there are many things that you can do with your one wild and precious life, then you are definitely in the right place, my dear. So back on episode 88 of the Daily Pet, we really started diving into this idea of your future self. And that episode was all about what can you do today that your future self will be grateful for? And it's taken from a quote I had on the calendar several years ago. And I've cut it out and it remains on my office wall. And it's something that really drives me. But today we're going to look at it from a slightly different angle. I think it's fair to say that we give our future selves a lot to do.
We put all of the creative plans that we're not quite ready for onto our future selves. We put all the tasks that we didn't get round to onto our future selves. We put a lot of our dreams and a lot of our ambitions onto our future selves. And actually, I don't think it takes that much for our future selves to be really burdened. What really got me thinking about this was a quote I found by Tim Urban. So you might know Tim Urban if you've seen his TED talk called Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator. And if you haven't, that's a brilliant one. I'll put the link in the show notes.
And that's what this is about, really. It's about procrastination. So Tim writes, I've banked on future Tim's real world existence for my most important plans. But every time I finally arrive at a time when I thought I would find future Tim and he was nowhere to be found. And that's the thing that really sucks about future you. Whenever time finally gets to future Tim, he's not future you anymore. He's the present you. And the present you can't do the task you assigned to future you.
So you do what you always do. You redelegate them to future you, hoping that next time time catches up with future you, he actually exists. And that just really got me thinking. And one of the things that got me thinking was, let's actually be a bit fucking kinder to our future selves by doing more of the things now. It's not just about avoiding procrastination. It's not just about putting things off because they feel like there'll be a better time in the future. It's actually much kinder and a much more compassionate way to treat yourself if you don't burden your future self with all that stuff. Maybe it's about taking some things off your plate.
Maybe it's about making a plan and sticking to them. And maybe it's looking at what small step you could do today that would get you slightly further along. Because that way, when you do catch up with future you, you might be pleasantly surprised instead of disappointed. So that is my food for thought for you today. Here's to not burdening our future selves. Here's to taking things off our plates, or off the plate of our future selves if we need to. And here's to know that someday isn't some magical world where it will have already been done, and that there are things that you can start doing no matter how tiny Today, if you're curious about the things that I've been reading I've been watching that speak to me and ways that I'm creating my own wholehearted life and things that are helping on that journey, make sure you sign up to my Sunday emails where I share the more vulnerable and personal stuff that I just don't share anywhere else.
