503: In praise of slow progress and imperfect action

If you feel like you're slogging your guts out, and things aren't improving - this episode's for you.

Episode transcript:

Good morning Daily Peppers and a very happy Thursday to you. This week, we are celebrating into over 500 episodes of the daily pep. And today, we are diving into everything related to getting better at things and improving at things. So if you feel like you are slugging your guts out and not much is happening or you're not seeing a huge amount of improvement or you're not feeling hugely motivated, this one is for you. Now back when I started the daily pep, I had this vision of just being able to sit down at my microphone and being able to shoot the ship. I remembered, daily personal development podcast I used to listen to when I was about fifteen, and how I loved that he was just able to tell stories, and it all just felt so natural. I remember thinking that that is exactly where I want to get to with the daily pep. I want to get to the fact that I can just walk in, get myself sorted, and just shoot the shit straight away. No edits, and it would roll off my tongue easily. Now yesterday, we really started to pull the curtain back. Today, the curtain is fully open. because I wanna share with you what is actually being like behind the scenes.

So I would say that I started off maybe the first 30 episodes of the daily pep. Completely and utterly scripted. I pretty much wrote down what I would say word for word, And there were still so many takes and so many stops and starts. I would trip over words regularly, I would get completely befuddled on so many different words, but to the outside ear, it probably wasn't even noticeable. A bit like you probably haven't noticed as you listen to this, that just for this episode, I've just stopped and counted, we are already on 13 separate bits. where I've had to break or I've had to redo because my list has come out in full force, or I rambled, and there was no point or the bus pulled up outside and got really loud. So I had this idea that one day I would just be able to record in one continuous take And my dream was that one day I could get to a point where I wasn't scripted because let me tell you doing a daily podcast where you write everything that you're gonna say out beforehand takes no enough three times the amount of time. especially if like me, you are prone to stumbling over your words, or you start reading something that doesn't make sense and you have to go back, and how long that took. Now I would say it was a couple of months in that I was able to record an episode where I'd got a bit of a looser struck in terms of I have maybe a couple of paragraphs and some bullet points to expand on, and that felt pretty fucking good And then fast forward to nearly 2 years later, I can have one word written down in a piece of paper. And I can turn the microphone on, and I can pretty much go for it But there will still be lots of stops and start, so it would definitely time to go off on a tangent and redo. But, generally, I'm happy with my process. But the reason I'm really laboring this point is that I think when it comes to making progress on things, We expect that when we get to the next level, there's almost gonna be fanfare or there will be this really obvious point where we realize we have leveled up or we've got to the next checkpoint in the game, but it doesn't happen. Instead, what happens is that one day you wake up and realize it wasn't as hard as it was a couple of months ago. It all happens very, very quietly. I imagine if you're a runner, which I'm absolutely not, so I may, well, butcher this, Maybe one day you realize that you can run a longer distance without getting out of breath. Or maybe one day you realize that you're actually looking forward to your run rather than forcing yourself to do it. But I think what with school and how we've grown up and how we see other people accomplish things, We assume that there will be telltale signs we have made massive progress, and we wait for those things and they don't happen, and it can be really heartening. And like I was just saying about going for run or how I was sharing about me, being able to do this totally unscripted, It wasn't a case of the first day I did it. I was like, holy shit. I've made it. Holy shit. I've done it. I didn't even notice. It took quite a long time after to figure out that that was even a thing.

And also by time, it was less of a celebration and more of a, oh, that's cool. So if you're not feeling particularly motivated by habit you've been building on, or some area in your life, which you feel like you should be further ahead, or you don't feel like you're making as much progress as you'd to be. Maybe consider the fact that you have upleveled, but you haven't even noticed. And going back to the goal or the vision you had when you started it, sometimes it takes doing the thing to realize that the gold or the vision you had beforehand wasn't even necessarily relevant, or it doesn't apply for you. For example, for me, I don't think that there's ever gonna be a time where I can just come in here, sit down with you, and record an entire episode in one take. No matter how hard I work at this, there is always going to be some kind of interruption, I'm always gonna get lost on some kind of tangent or stumble over my words or say something that doesn't make sense. or say something that sounds really cringy that I immediately take out, but that's okay. Is there part of me that would still absolutely love to do that? Back. Yes. Of course, there is. But it doesn't feel half as important as I thought it was when I started.

What means absolutely the world to me now is that I can come in and record an episode and not worry too much about it. not have to script everything, not have to censor myself. And just that it's become something that I can rock up at and do it as easily as I do a lot of other things like tie my shoelaces. And believe me, I never ever, ever would have believed that would be the case. And don't get me wrong, there are still times where It feels like I'm putting on the world's tightest pair of shoes and the laces are all knotted, and it's a bit of a shit show. and embrace the fact that shit shows happen, and that's okay.

What you start off thinking is really important may become a whole lot less important further down the line. And when you've been doing something for a while or when something starts to feel more integrated into your life, the things that you will recognize as really important and hold dear to your heart often the things that you didn't even really think about before you got started because you didn't have that contact and you didn't have that understanding and that practice when you were first starting out because how could you? So if you are feeling demotivated, a bit disheartened on something that you've been working at for a while, or you're wondering why you're not further ahead. Consider the fact that you might actually be far far further ahead than you think you are. And remember that your priorities and what's important might change, your vision might change, And you absolutely reserve the right to change your mind to give up to whatever at any time. So here's to knowing that practice does not make perfect. Here's to knowing that milestones often don't come with a fanfare.

And here's to know in the often the reward for doing something, often comes in the form of doing it itself. I will see you tomorrow.

494: Tie a bow around your week!

Today we're looking at a practical way for rounding off the week and acknowledging what we have done.

                  Episode transcript:

Good morning. Daily Peppers and a very happy Friday today. So this week in the Daily Peppa been diving into some practical tourism. And today, I wanna share with you a really good way to round off the week.

Now we all have Fridays where we can't wait to just finish work and just put it away and forget about it for a while. And I know some of us have the ability to do that in terms of we find it easier than others to turn off. Hands up, that is not me. And there's some of us who we really struggle to kind of finish the week in terms of acknowledge what we have done, and let go of the things that we haven't. So today's practical tour is all about trying to put a bit of a bow on Friday. It's not about making it into this perfect package, but it is about having a bit of a review, seeing where you're at, maybe doing something for future you on Monday morning. Who's gonna be really damn grateful that you did it? So I really want to challenge you to try having maybe the last half hour of a Friday or whatever the end of the working week is for you. and seeing if you can put aside some time to just do a bit of a review of where you got to, what's left to do, and what you're gonna just let go of and maybe leave a note for Monday morning you, which will be really helpful. It is so tempting to just kinda damn your tools and run away from work and just head straight into the weekend. but I think doing something like this can often be so helpful because we actually feel like we've achieved something. We actually feel like we've almost closed that book. It makes it easier to relax, and it also makes it easier to come back to.

So try that one on for size today. Do a bit of a weekly review. Remember, it doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to take very long. and give yourself the gift of done. Whatever your weekend looks like, I hope you have a good one. It is such an honor to get to accompany you every day, and I can't wait to back with you bright and early as always on Monday morning. or in your inbox, my letters are rebellion on Sunday. Either way, I'll see you soon. You fucking fabulous human you.

493: This one's for all us people pleasers

Courtesy of The Curse of Lovely by Jacqui Marson, today's episode explores a fabulous starting point for saying no.

                  Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Now here on The Daily Pep, We are diving into some practical tools this week to help you get shit done without treating yourself or feeling like shit. And today, I wanna share one of my favorites, courtesy of the fabulous Jacqui Marson. So Jackie is the author of a book that I recommend to literally every single one of the women I work with, and it's called The Curse of Lovely, How to Break free from the demands of others and then how to say no. Now I don't know about you, but that title alone resonates with me. Around here, we tend to be recovering people pleasers, and it is so much easier to say yes than it is no. And like we all know far too well, that often means that we end up overcommitting, overpromising, And that doesn't feel great if we can't deliver, but it also leads to resentment. And I know I'm not alone in the fact that I've had So many conversations where a yes has literally slipped out of my mouth before I've really had a chance to think about it.

And within about 5 seconds, I'm already having a conversation with myself in my head around why on earth did you say yes to that, But also feeling like I can't go back and change my mind. Now the reason I share the curse of Lovely today is because there's one bit in it where she shares A really simple, practical way of starting to learn to say no that I come back to time and time again. And it is as simple as this. When somebody asks you to do something, rather than give an automatic yes Or give a yes if it feels like a good yes. Pause, try and catch yourself, and tell them that you'll think about it or you'll have to get back to them. Now this might feel particularly scary if you are just not used to saying no to people, Or your yeses kind of come out automatically. But what this does is it buys you some time to think about it, To assess whether you actually want to or can do this thing, and gives you the space to make the decision on your own terms, Rather than feeling like you have to please a person and you're used to saying yes, they're used to you saying yes, and just going with that. I think it's also worth remembering here that your people pleasing comes from a really good place.

But knowing that your time and your energy is Just as valuable, if not more valuable, than anybody else's, and that you get to respect yourself and please yourself too. So if you are a fellow recovering people pleaser, I really encourage you to try this one on for size this week. See if you can do it twice. Push yourself a little bit, and see what it feels like to give yourself that room. It can be really scary starting to say no, but it also can be really fucking liberating. So start small. Know that saying no alongside self compassion is a bit like building up that muscle. We're gonna start really, really small first.

Celebrate the fact that you've done it, and soon you'll start to see that the reward comes in the same low in the 1st place. So that is my practical tip for today. I can't wait to be back with you tomorrow. And remember that you are definitely not alone in this hole. Learning to put yourself first or learning to take care of yourself, this is hardship. There are a lot of people doing this right alongside you, And you've got this. I'll see you tomorrow.

490: Beast Mode Days & Fluffy Days

This week on the Daily Pep! we're looking at some practical tips to get out of your own way! On today's episode we're diving into Beast Mode Days & Fluffy Days.

                      Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Monday. It is a delight to kick off the week with you. So this week on the Daily Pep, I am sharing some of my favorite practical ways to get shit done in a way that doesn't make you feel like shit and get out of your own way. So I thought we would kick off this week talking a bit about energy levels and how much we expect ourselves to get done. Now, like a lot of us, I have struggled with burnout and that vicious cycle of pushing yourself too hard to the point of actually feeling quite poorly, resting because I have to, and then doing it all over again. And. And like always, I'll be very transparent and share with you that there were times in my life that I wore that as a bit of a badge of honor. It was proof of just how hard I was working, that nobody could mistake the effort I was putting in.

And it was a bit of an ego thing. But since I burned out really hard about eight years ago, a lot has changed. And I won't say that I never get burnt out anymore, but I can tend to spot when I'm pushing myself too hard. And rather than just keep going, I tend to be more able to catch myself in time. And it's a sign that I actually need to be more compassionate to myself rather than prove myself. And one of the biggest things that I've learned along the way is this idea of beast mode. Now, if you've ever had a day or a couple of hours where you have got shit done and you feel like superwoman and you are like, holy shit, look at me go. And you are feeling pretty damn impressed with yourself, you'll know what I mean.

It's those days where you seem to be able to fly through your to do list and more with so much ease, and you then start to question what you've been doing all these other days. Now, when I have a day like this, I tend to call it my beast mode day. And I never know when they're going to happen, but when they happen, they feel really good. And I get really intrigued by what if every day could look like this, I start thinking of just how much more I could get done. And it is so easy to go down the rabbit hole of thinking, well, what am I doing the rest of the time? On those days, I go to bed pretty tired, and I'm like, right, let's do it all over again tomorrow. And then I'm always a little bit surprised. I am absolutely just knackered the next day, which really isn't a surprise, but you know what our brains are like at finding ways to beat ourselves up. But rather than go down that quite horrible rabbit hole, I've just come to realize that beast mode days are beast mode days.

And the day after, I'm probably going to feel exhausted and to actually expect that and to take them as the joy they are at the time, but also to remember that it is absolutely not realistic or fair to myself to expect myself to pull that off every single day. I think after a beast mode day, what you probably need the most is a recovery day or a bit of a fluffy day. And also know that many days are going to be somewhere in between the two, and that's okay. And that's actually pretty damn normal. So I thought I would share a bit about my beast mode days because I think we've all had those experiences where we get so much shit done and we start to reflect on how we can make our life more like that. And of course there are small tweaks you can do and there's incremental changes you can make that are probably going to make you more productive. But to expect yourself to operate on that level every single day is to treat yourself like a machine and not the fabulously imperfect human that you are.

There is nothing wrong with you. And if you have beast mode days, that says absolutely nothing about the rest of your days. Because you're trying your best and your best is fucking brilliant. And I just invite you to consider what if we really embraced our beast mode days when they turn up and really enjoy them without the pressure or expectation that they become the new norm.

So have a think about how that applies to your own life. By all means, see if you can spot the patterns of what is more likely to lead to a beast mode day, because that can be a really fun way of figuring out what really puts us in our flow. And give yourself compassion to the fact that your best is going to look differently every single day. And that is okay. Beast mode is great. Fluffy days are needed. And you on a day to day basis, you're doing so much better than you think you are. I'll see you tomorrow.

483: Your inner critic really, truly is a liar

Today sassy Meg is back! In today's episode we dive back into how our inner critic really, truly is a liar.

                              Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. I am so excited to continue sharing my favourite pieces of unconventional wisdom for you. And Sassy Meg is in the house for this one. So yesterday we were talking about how we tend to live with the voice of this inner critic or inner dream shitter that tells us that we're not good enough, that we're not doing enough, that we're lazy, that we're not as good as other people, etc. Etc. And today I'm here to be a self proclaimed voice of reason and remind you that that voice is absolute bollocks. It is bullshit, and your inner critic is a liar. Here's the thing, because it sounds so much like your voice, it's so easy to accept it as the truth.

But the truth is that voice exists to keep you safe. And it usually pipes up when you're doing something that might be teetering on the edge of your comfort zone. When you're doing something that maybe you're actually meant to be doing, but it's scary. And when you're doing things that maybe you haven't done before or. Or there's an element of uncertainty too, because there's some risk of failure here, or there's some risk of being judged or rejected by others. Now, your inner critic may have good intentions of keeping you safe, but the problem is it will behave like an absolute dick in order to do so. It will find the most tender areas to poke. It knows exactly what buttons to press, and it knows exactly what to say to stop you from doing something that it deems risky, but could actually be something fabulous and could be the work that you're meant to do.

So today I just want to counteract that voice a minute and tell you some actual truths. And the truth is, is that there is plenty of space for you in the world. There is nobody who can do exactly what you do in the way you do it. And that has your fabulously unique combination of skills, strengths, experiences, stories and perspectives. You are somebody who makes a difference, even if you don't know it. Whatever it is you're creating or thinking of bringing to life, there are people that are out there waiting for it and they need your take on it. It doesn't matter whether other people are doing similar things. They need it to come from you.

What you have to say, as cheesy as this sounds, is original because you are an original. And nobody in the world does what you do. You do leave your mark. You do do enough. And you, my dear, are fucking plenty good enough exactly as you are my life motto and the motto around here is that everything changes when you believe you matter. And part of that journey is realizing that your inner dream shitter may be well intentioned, but it's talking bullshit. And part of living a fulfilled, meaningful, wholehearted life goes back to that fabulous saying by Susan Jeffers about feeling the fear and doing it anyway. And I've got a feeling that since you already listened to this, you are somebody who is already doing that.

So keep going, Keep going, despite that voice in your head that tells you you can't do it or questions who you even are to do it in the first place, or makes you wonder whether you have it, or whatever that is to offer to begin with. And instead listen to that smaller, much more quiet voice that sometimes we can only hear when we get really still. The voice that quietly questions that maybe you are actually the person to do this, maybe you can get through this and maybe it's all going to be all right. Listen to that voice instead. She is much wiser and she's led by curiosity, not fear. And I think we will all agree that we could all do with more curiosity and less fear in our lives. So that is my pep talk for you today. I have a feeling that it might be exactly what you needed to hear.

So keep going, keep doing you and know that you are pretty fucking fabulous. I'll see you tomorrow.
