            192: The opposite of yes

Today we're looking at the flip side of saying yes and what it tends to mean for our empathetic, big-hearted selves.

            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. You're listening to the Daily Pep. And if you need a dose of Rebel Rousing, if you need a bit of encouragement, and if you're a bit sick of standing in your own way, you've come to the right podcast. So around here, I think it's a fair generalization to say that we are the helpers, we are the empaths, and we like to make a difference. And in a lot of ways, those are huge superpowers of ours. And in other ways, it can lead to some pretty people pleasing tendencies, and I say this with both hands firmly raised in the air. So today, I wanna share something which has been a huge game changer for me, and it's this idea of the opposite of yes or the flip side of yes. Now when it comes to any requests that come our way, anybody asking us to do things, or any demands on our time and energy, it can be really hard to say no.

It can feel selfish to put ourselves first. And let's face it, as women, we're socialized with people pleasers to always put others before ourselves, and I think that's where a lot of this kind of selfish narrative comes into it. But I think something really starts to change when you realize that when you say yes to something, you're also saying no to something else. And the thing that we're usually saying no to is ourselves. We honor the score when it comes to things that we do for ourselves. They are the first thing to escape off the bottom of our to do list. They are the first thing to go when we're busy or overwhelmed. And it's often the first thing we sacrifice when we're saying yes to other things.

And while it can feel good at the time to say yes to things and get that kind of validation and appreciation, which I know isn't why we say yes, we genuinely want to help, but we can't escape the fact that it often comes with it. We also know the bitter other side of it where our internal monologue is like, why did you say yes? Come on. I thought we weren't gonna do this anymore. And we're really regretting saying yes. And also, I know I've definitely been in the place where I say yes to way too many things in the aims of being helpful. And I say this with compassion, if you've ever been in this place, let's not judge ourselves. I've definitely ended up disappointing people because I couldn't do it all. And looking back, it was kind of inevitable because the amount of things I was saying yes to, well, I'm not Superwoman, and neither are you and that's okay.

The thing is it takes courage to accept your limitations. It is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that you have a huge heart and it needs to be protected. If you struggle with saying no, I seriously recommend the book, The Curse of Lovely by Jacqui Marson. It has changed so much for me. And there's one tip I remember, and it's always stuck with me. And it's this idea of when somebody asks you to do something, instead of immediately saying yes, which is a new enough automatic reaction, just take a pause. Give yourself a second to think.

And if you're not sure whether you want to do it, it's okay to say I'll get back to you on that. So, yeah, really recommend that book. And just for today, let's remember that everything we say yes to has a flip side, and the opposite of yes is usually saying no to ourselves. And I think it's about damn time we started saying yes to ourselves too Because you matter just as much as all the other people in your life. You matter just as much as all the causes you're fighting for. You matter, full stop. So here's to saying yes to yourself, and my challenge for you this week is to find one way you can say yes to yourself and really claim that. So I hope you have a fabulous Thursday. And remember that everything changes when you believe you matter. And that can start with saying no to some things and yes to yourself. See you tomorrow.

187: Go back to the source

If you're feeling uninspired, it's so tempting to focus on the new that we completely overlook the things we know work. That's what we're diving into in today's episode of The Daily Pep!

                    Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. If you're in the need of some inspiration, if you need a bit of motivation, or if you just can't seem to get yourself going this week, then you're listening to the right podcast. Now this week, we've talked a lot about just motivation, keeping yourself going, and enthusiasm. And I think it's fair to say that one of the things so many of us start with when we don't feel motivated or we just don't have much enthusiasm is we look for new things. And I think there can be so much value in the new stuff. Finding new books that you fall in love with, finding music that just makes their hairs on the back of your neck stand up, finding films that remind you why you're alive and why you do what you do. But I think that sometimes in search of the new, we can really overlook things that give us that already that maybe we've even forgotten about. I know for me, there are certain books, certain poets, certain films that I watch Whenever I need to feel inspired and every single time I watch them or read them or listen to them, I'm always surprised by just how much difference they make and also how much time has passed since I last turned to them.

So if you're feeling low on the motivation front, if you're forgetting why you do what you do, or if you need a bit of a boost, turn to those things that inspire you. It doesn't matter if you can't put your finger on exactly why they speak to you, But if they make you feel something and they make you feel alive or creative or they reinstall your faith in humanity a bit, really go back to them. They speak to you for a reason, and they might just be what you need to be focusing on right now. So here's to going back to the things we love. Here's to feeling alive, and here's to knowing that your motivation will return. Have a good one. I can't wait to see you back here tomorrow morning. And if you miss a daily prep on the weekend, make sure you sign up to my Sunday emails where I share all the personal, most vulnerable things I don't share anywhere else when it comes to building my own wholehearted creative life in the hope that it helps you build yours too.

182: Your creative style will change

Today we're debunking the myth that your creative style has to stay the same, and diving into how your creative voice evolves as you do!

                            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Thursday to you. Your lesson to the daily pack, which is the only daily podcast. For creative, multi passionate, rebellious, and unconventional women, who wanna get out their own way and make shit happen. So earlier this week, we were talking all about this idea of finding your own creative style or your own creative voice and how it's something that so many of us struggle with. And we really dove into this idea that the only way you find it is by using it and by developing it and giving yourself permission to explore it. And I wanna dive a bit deeper into that today because I think so often there's this myth that you find your style and that's it. It's something that stays with you for life. It never changes, and you have to stick to that style.

Now like we talked about earlier in the week, there are definitely gonna be patterns and themes that emerge in your work across your lifetime. There are things that make it uniquely you, that make it identifiable as you, but that doesn't mean it has to be this rigid concept. The reality is that over your life as your taste develop, as you have your life experiences and your stories, your style will evolve as you do. Our work and our creative voice tends to grow with us. And what that's gonna mean is that your work for one period of your life will probably look completely distinctly different to another period of your life. And I think sometimes we get caught up in this trap that maybe that means we didn't find our style or our voice after all, but that is just absolute bollocks. Your style is gonna change as you do. I know for me, if I look at my work from different years ago, there is the same thread that's running through it but it's definitely showing up in different ways.

It's true for many of us creators that we look back on our past work and we see things that we would improve or we do differently. But that was a reflection of who we were at that time, of our experiences, of our tastes, of our styles. And it's okay if your style has evolved completely. In fact, I would be surprised if it hadn't. Around here, we're all about not fitting into a box. We're all about living the life that only you could live. And I just wanna remind you that that is true when it comes to your creativity as well. If you wanna change things up, do.

And if you feel like you've stuck yourself in a box that you're outgrowing, I invite you to remember the Banksy quote, which is think outside the box, collapse the box, and take a fucking sharp knife to it. Your style will evolve as you evolve, as your interests evolve, as your passions evolve, as they do for us multipassionates. And that does not make you flighty or flaky or somebody who doesn't finish things. That makes you a human that is growing, that is changing, and that is emerging. So here's to embracing your creativity in all of its forms. Here's to not putting yourself in a box, and here's to knowing that change is natural. If you would like a weekly dose of rebel rising and permission to live outside the box in your email every week, make sure you're signed up to my Sunday emails where it's all about embracing being a creative, multifacetionate, rebellious, and unconventional woman. And it's all about building a life that only you can live, and I'm sharing how I'm building mine in the hope that it'll help you build yours.

You can sign up to them by going to that therebelrousers.com and clicking on Sunday emails, or click the link in the show notes, and I would love to see you there. So until next time, stay creative, stay curious, and stay weird. See you then.

181: You have to stop somewhere

If your to-do list feels never ending and you struggle to get everything done, you’re not alone and this one’s for you!

                            Episode transcript:

Good morning, Daily Peppers and a very happy Wednesday to you. It's the middle of the week, it's hump day. And if you feel like there's always something else to do and you need a bit more self compassion, well, this episode is definitely for you. Now, I don't know about you, but I can't remember the last time where I got everything checked off my to do list. There always seems to be more that needs to be done, whether that's in work, whether that's in my personal life, whether that's life admin. And I think this is true for a lot of us. It seems like sometimes there's just never enough hours and there's just always more to be done and the list never ends. And that's why I really want to dive in with you today because to some extent, I think getting it all done is elusive.

There are always going to be more things. And when you get to the end of your list, you're going to think of things that you forgot or you're going to think of things that now you've got perhaps a bit of extra time. Oh, it would be good to get those done or it would be good to get ahead. And let's face it, it feels a bit like we're on a hamster wheel. And it's really hard to stop, it's really hard to get off because there's so many plates spinning all at the same time. And we just don't want to take our eye off the ball. And I know there's a lot of mixed metaphors there, but I think that's what it feels like. It feels like being a hamster in a wheel who's also spinning plates and juggling at the same time.

And it can be really fucking overwhelming. But today I want to flip it on its head a bit and find a new way of looking at it. A way that is kinder, a way that is more compassionate, and a way that actually acknowledges and honors our limitations. Because whether we want to believe it or not, we all have them. And this is going back to this idea that we will never have everything done. And that's okay. And that's where prioritizing comes in, and that's where having really firm boundaries comes in. When it comes to our work and our creative work, that's where having a stop time at the end of the day is really important.

When it comes to our family life and our personal life, that's where implementing boundaries becomes really important. And it's about carving out time for you, even if it's just 10 minutes and defending that as fiercely as you would an appointment with somebody else. Because let's face it, for all of us, it is so much easier to do something for somebody else than it is for ourselves. So today I would just want to tell you this. Your to do list may never end. There may always be things that can be added on. There are always extra items that we forget because we are all human. And the truth is, let's say your to do list is so busy that even if you work for 24 hours a day, you still find things to do.

Then at some point you need to stop. And at some point you need to say, okay, this is what I can do today. These are the most important things. These are the most urgent things. This is what I can do. Let's take some time for me and then let's start again tomorrow. I think it is so easy for our self worth to be so tied up in what we do and how much we do or don't get done. And today I just want to remind you that that is absolute bollocks.

Your self worth is inherent. It is not reliant on things you do. It is not reliant on the things that you can tick off a list and it is certainly not reliant on you round the clock being that hamster on the wheel juggling all the plates. Now I know sometimes life is just so busy and we all go through periods where there is just too much to do, but the challenge is to not let that become your default. The challenge is to have those periods and then go back to having firm boundaries and being able to stop at a reasonable time and putting yourself into the equation as well. So that is my food for thought for the day. I hope you have a fabulous Wednesday. I can't wait to see you back here bright and early tomorrow morning.

And if you want an extra dose of Rebel Rousing, make sure you sign up to my Sunday Emails where I share all the things that I'm personally working through when it comes to building my own wholehearted creative life in the hopes that it's something that might help you too and you can get in on them by going to thathummingbirdlife.com and clicking on Sunday Emails or or just click the link in the show notes. Have a good one. See you tomorrow and take care.
