1121: On giving yourself what you need
It's so easy to disregard our needs as luxuries, versus the necessities they are, and that's exactly what we're diving into today!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, Daily Peppers, and a very happy Tuesday to you. So 1 of the things that I am sick of in the personal development world is the fact that so many people in that space with podcasts, with books, with blogs, try to make out that they've got all their shit sorted out. And I know for me, I definitely do not have all my shit sorted out. Now 1 of the things that I struggle with is revenge bedtime procrastination. You might have heard the term, but it's essentially when you put off and put off and put off bedtime, even though you know your future self certainly isn't gonna thank you for it. For me, revenge bedtime looks like lying in bed on my phone, scrolling, and getting lost down the rabbit holes. I'm really good at telling myself that I'll just give it to the next quarter of an hour and then I will absolutely put my phone on charge and go to sleep. But that very, very rarely happens.
And I think we can give ourselves a massively hard time about this without taking into account that so many of the things that we end up procrastinating on or down the rabbit holes with are things that have been designed to be pretty addictive. There is so much psychology that goes into the user design and the user experience. And rather than thinking about that, we just immediately go to the fact that we have no willpower or discipline. And the reason I'm bringing this up today, it's gonna seem quite tangential, but we're gonna get there, is because lately, I've been thinking about for myself, what is something that I'm terming a luxury that is actually a necessity? So going back to the whole revenge bedtime procrastination thing, I think 1 of the main reasons I do it is because I don't give myself time to decompress during the day. I spend a lot of time coaching and on Zoom and holding space. And I know for me, I haven't been the best at giving myself time to really decompress from that, to quite literally give myself a breather and time to catch up with myself and time just to process everything. But 1 of the things I'm realizing lately is that after a call, if I can give myself 10 minutes to go outside and just really breathe and not really think about anything, it makes a world of difference. But what I've been doing instead is thinking that that is a luxury that is always shit to do that I haven't got time for that and depriving myself of that.
So no wonder when I get to bedtime, my brain's like, come on. Can we just have a quick holiday? Like, can we just take a bit of a break? Because I've been overloaded all day. And scrolling on your phone is a perfect way to do that. So this is a very, very long winded way of saying, what are the things in your life that you know really help you and make a massive difference that you're branding as a luxury rather than a necessity. And the things that each of us need are gonna vary completely from person to person. What really matters to you and what is something that really calms you or gives you life Maybe something that somebody else wouldn't even think of doing or somebody else would think is a luxury. And that's okay. The important thing here is to listen to ourselves and try and give ourselves what we need no matter how uncomfortable that may feel.
Now it is absolutely not all about being productive all the time. But if you're having a hard time giving yourself permission to do the things you need to do take this as an example. I know on the days where I give myself time to decompress, I am way less likely to spend literally hours on my phone at the end of the day. And by taking that time, I can actually get a decent night's sleep. I actually feel more fulfilled at the end of the day, and I wake up feeling a bit more refreshed. So give yourself grace with the things that you procrastinate with. Know that decompression is really important. And maybe the ways you procrastinate are more about you needing that decompression time than they are the fact that you're lazy, which you are not.
And here's to recognizing which things that are luxuries are actually necessities. So, have a think. A lot of food for thought for you here. Have a good one, and I'll see you tomorrow.

1114: Use the plasters!
Today I'm sharing a really helpful reminder, and some really powerful questions to help you give yourself more of what you need!
Episode transcript:
Good morning, daily peppers. And a very happy Friday to you. We have made it to the end of the week. Now, I started off this week on the daily path both talking about my new adventures in the gym and also about how we're all climbing metaphorical mountains. And I'm wrapping it all up in a neat bow by talking about something that can connect both the gym and climbing mountains, and that is the blisters that can come with a new pair of shoes. It's fair to say that we've probably all had that experience of blisters on the back of our ankles or cuts on the back of our ankles from new shoes. For me, for a lot of my life, I was a hard fast dm wearer, and I knew that whenever I got a new pair, and my goodness, I would make them last, I was in for grueling 1st week. I put on a really thick pair of socks.
I put on all the plasters because that's kind of just what you do when you've got really sore and bloody ankles. Now I'm bringing this up today because I have very sore ankles thanks to my new trainers. And I was just reflecting on how easy that decision is of how my ankles hurt. They're bleeding. I need plasters. We don't really put much thought into it. We don't think about whether we deserve plasters. It's more like, oh, shit.
Where are the plasters? Do I have any plasters? Rather than having to justify using them in the first place. Yet there are so many areas of our lives where we simply deprive ourselves of our needs. While there certainly are no fixes for everything in life, for quite a lot of things, there are equivalents of plasters. But if we're really to roll with this whole bloody ankle plaster thing, we tell ourselves that we can only use a plaster when the blood is streaming down our legs, or the pain is so unbearable that we can't even stand up. Now if we go back to literal plasters for a second, it's not about solving the entire problem. Essentially, it comes down to 2 things, and that is finding a sense of comfort or finding a bit of relief. And that's where I really wanna focus on. In what areas of your life are you depriving yourself of some comfort or some relief because you feel like you have to earn it, or you feel like the pain has to be worse to justify supporting yourself or reaching out? And in what areas of your life are you continuously putting on the pair of shoes, maybe lacing them up even tighter, and just telling yourself you've got to deal with it.
Now I get that these are not particularly comfortable, pun intended, questions, but they're also really important because we all deserve love. We all deserve support, and we don't have to qualify for that from ourselves or from other people only when the shit hits the fan. So my courageous challenge for you over the weekend is to have a think about what metaphorical plaster would be really helpful for you in your life that maybe you've been depriving yourself of or maybe you've not even really thought about. What is something that, to go back to the theme of this week, would make your life a bit easier, would make this period a little bit less challenging, and would provide a bit of comfort or relief. So have a think about it. Remember that often when we feel our weakest, we are usually exercising a huge amount of courage and that courage usually doesn't feel a lot like courage at the time. And remember that you are allowed to ask for help, including from yourself. So happy Friday, my loves. We made it. Here's to using the plasters. And I'll see you on Monday.
